I've never actually played a elder scrolls game, when morrowind came out my pc couldnt play it, and then later I got oblivion..and I just did not like it. Not sure if I should try this....I still havent played the witcher..loved the first game, so the second must be played....when I get time
From what I've seen Looks like the elder scrolls games are more about customization and open worldness rather than story and atmosphere, that isnt my thing, or does it pick up later?
If you're going on Oblivion when you state that it's more about open worldness than story i would say yes. Read my post up near the top (the long one), it explains what was wrong with oblivion.
Morrowind was great in terms of story. In fact it was amazing. You had to put a lot of effort into it, but you got out of it just as much as you put in.
Skyrim is currently looking as good as morrowind story wise so far. Fingers crossed that it continues it's upward trend.
And it's so damn pretty. :P

Elder Scrolls games probably have MORE atmosphere and story than any other games i've played. The game is pretty overwhelming early on (just the sheer mass of stuff to do) but you get into a rhythm with it. That's the point, you do things at your own pace

No the point is it is a massive open world that you can do whatever you like, which also has a story and awesome atmosphere. Honestly Skyrim is a much more refined Oblivion, the world feels more gritty and real, and you aren't 'locked' into your class choice, you can literally fast travel to a location and change your star stone and BAM you can level magic quickly now instead of sneaky skills.
Honestly you should try renting it on a console (borrow a friend's console for a day if you have to) and give it a go for a few hours. If you like it get a PC copy, if not no big loss right?

IMO witcher 1 was one of the most flat and boring RPGs ive ever played. Didn't touch witcher2 as a result. You probably wouldn't like these games if you enjoyed it!

Yeah witcher was really boring for having well fleshed out characters and inspired story line. Success as an rpg in the 21st century is tough enough already due to the cookie cutter shooters flooding the market. The guys that made witcher should have realised you cant put too much emphasis on characters and well written plot, and god forbid that you actually be able to make choices that affect the game. Not hating on skyrim, i love it too. Just a little annoyed at what rpgs must conform to if they are to even have a CHANCE at being successful in the age of cod.
Gotta be quantity over quality, simplicity over depth, linear plot progression as well as siiiiickkkk graphix
it been out for a few days and its good but its certainly a time suck
There are minor issues with things like interface and the engine but otherwise its the culmination of the prior 4 elder scrolls and the fallout games
Skyrim (PC Version) has been able to drag me away from SC2 since Friday and I've racked up about 15 hours of gameplay so far so playing it that much alone means it's won my tick of approval.
Graphics: Amazing, simply awesome. Only downside is when you get close up to textures they look muddy and blurred but when you move back it's much clearer. The towns, landscapes, weather system - truely incredible.
Gameplay: A lot of games these days are trying to go with the 'non-linear' approach that you can do what you want - but not all actually live up to it. With Skyrim you can pretty much do what you want, when you want, how you want. If you don't want to follow the main quests you can go raiding doungeons, joining guilds, doing small tasks for people for gold, once you get in-game and explore the world and see how many options get thrown at you you'll see what I mean. I've lost count of how many times I've been side-tracked during quests. Apparently the game will also generate quests (more so jobs I believe) for players so there is always something to do.
Battle: It is a bit hectic and it doesn't venture TOO far from Oblivion in that sense but cool new spells, awesome weapon sounds which make them sound so much more real does improve battle's quite a lot when compared with Oblivion.
P.S. Fighting dragons is AWESOME, especially with the sound cranked right up.
I can't really go into it too much as I haven't finished it or anything. But if you did enjoy Oblivion you'll love Skyrim.
Here are a few screenshots I've taken, not my settings are on very high but I don't think I have everything at 100%.
played for a few hours, after having not played since Morrorwind (which as is echoed here is awesome) I think I'm going to have to invest in a horse though lol.
Playing Skyrim, few hours in, I'm lvl 4, heavily magic focused (as always) Breton.
I play on Expert (hardest level), and gotta tell that conjuration is OP. Summoned Flame Atronarch 1-shot 5 or 6 bandits, and it only takes my entire mana pool to summon, and lasts for 60 (!) seconds. I'm basically bossing around with tis summon right now, and nothing can hurt me.
Already killed my first dragon, the fight would've been much more epic if it wasn't jumping around like a mad frog. And I sat behind a rock for most of the fight, while me summon did the dirty work.
Mercs suck. Crafting sucks. Alchemy sucks.
That's my opinion so far. Sorry for spoilers, don't have time to put in collapse.
GL HF.

Yeah I haven't even bothered with crafting or alchemy at all, doesn't seem to be worth the hassle.
Well I've just finished the main story-line and I purposefully avoided it for most of my play time (opting to do my own thing instead for the past..week). Here is my quick review of Skyrim. Keep in mind that I've hated almost every Beth RPG since Morrowind, including Oblivion and Fallout. Now there will be spoilers below, so if you don't mind learning about general plot you don't need to worry, this will be fine for you to read.
Story: 7/10. I gave it a 7/10 because the main quest-chains were very generic. You were a part of a rebellion/trying to stop a rebellion... You have to slay a dragon or he will end man kind with his dragon powers. <- Pretty basic and the whole story has been done a million times before. The reason I gave it a score higher then 0 (because that is what I give unoriginal garbage) was because there was so much choice within that story, and they more then compensated for it when it came to the world you were allowed to immerse yourself in. They fixed the DB, the mage guild equivalent didn't suck, the warrior guild was true to the nordish way and the thieves were equally as cool. I felt like the main story was a little lackluster, but the individual town stories were all pretty good. I don't want to spoil them, but every hold/city/village has it's own characteristics and its' own characters... That is why I gave it such a high rating. ( and deducted marks for the main quest sucking..kind of).
Gameplay: 7/10. I loved the gameplay, playing through as a mage (later a spellsword) and I found it challenging and rewarding to beat rooms upon rooms full of minions wearing nothing but flimsy cloth and having a conjured wolf at my side. The combat can feel repetitive at times, with some of the monsters just being recycled over and over again, but what do you expect from an RPG of this scale? (I played at the second highest level of difficulty)
Visuals: 9/10. One of the best looking games I've seen this generation... and not only that, but it consistently looks great. Seeing Alduin for the first time? I shat brix, it was just that epic! The first time I got lost in a blizzard... amazing. I loved the graphics and the scenery.
Replayability: 8.5/10 Very high, they've added a few critical choices that make me want to see both sides of the coin, and it will leave you wondering too! Also, creating different characters in a game like this is always awesome
Normally I give the Beth games a 4-6/10 but this game gets a solid 8.5/10
Also, alchemy sucks... there are soo many potions you don't need it.
Enchanting is OP and so is smithing
Smith a deadric set + sword
Enchant with + damage
?
Win
Literally becomes pointless to be a mage when your 1h sword kills everything in 3 hits max.

Actually, it's very OP, Morrowind-style OP. You can stack alchemy enchants to make +enchanting potions to make +alchemy ecnhants more powerfull, end up with stupid amount of +alchemy, make a very powerful (+9000%) blacksmithing potion, make a 10k mele damage weapon, and 1-shot everything. I'm not into that kind of BS, so I'll get just enough enchanting to secure myself +XXX% mana regen, then I'm done.

Since last Sunday, I haven't logged into sc2 for a single seconds, 100% immersed into Skyrim. When I went to the bar this Friday, I ordered beer in 1L Nord-style mugs. The waitress was like "wtf" and I totally felt like FUS ROH DA in her face for being slow.

Also, I retract my 'alchemy sucks' statement.... here is the process (or so I've read I haven't done this with + alchemy ) Below is ridiculous OP weapon creation.
Get alchemy ... make some + enchanting potions
Enchant your armor with + smithing enchants
Make some + smithing potions
smith all of your armor (especially weapons)
Get weapons that do like 700 weapon damage...
^ Try to tell me that magic isn't a waste of time when you can do that.
