Lead Content Designer Kevin Martens shares his thoughts and insights on Diablo III’s upcoming beta test:

Q: When grouping together, what roles will the five player character classes fill? How will they interact with each other?

Kevin Martens: Diablo III doesn’t adhere to rigidly-defined class roles. Instead, we want to equip each class with the core toolset of abilities they need to be self-reliant. This toolset includes abilities for single-target damage, area-of-effect damage, movement, defense, and crowd control. Of course, that’s not to say each class will play exactly the same, nor do I want to imply that grouping will not be helpful. At the most basic level, the heavily-armored melee characters tend to wade into combat and soak up attacks, while the lighter, ranged characters dart around their enemies’ flanks, using position and speed to their advantage. Runes, equipment, and skill choices can also affect how a character will play. For example: a monk with the right build can withstand a lot of damage, enabling him to wade into enemy lines, while a barbarian with a certain spec might become a crowd-controlling striker, one that doesn’t go toe-to-toe with a mob of enemies, but instead charges quickly and isolates members of a larger group.

I'm pretty torn between playing a caster (again) and the monk/demon hunter.

I think i'll probably end up as a wizard since every game I play, i'll choose a caster. But I'm gonna vote for monk. Pretty badass looking imo.

Going for Barbarian, as I played one in D2 seems like a good place to start

Chances are I'm gonna put enough hours into D3 to have a fair crack at every class.

Wizard first on HC followed by a Barb (maybe Barb first then Wizard) and then the rest of the charatcers once these 2 pass normal, 1 character for SC mode specifically for the RMAH.

Going to roll a witchdoctor to start with, seems pretty fresh, very tempted to go Wizard but will do it later.

I'm sure within a few weeks I'll have multiples of all chars if it's anything like d2, so many builds to play with!

Will play through on SC to start with, then do hardcore after, only because I want to see all of the game without having to replay it 100x !

Choosing barbarian, played like every other class in diablo 2 so want to make a beastly barbarian for d3

. And amongst my friends it fits in perfectly as they all want to play wizard/witchdoctor/monk/demon hunter

In diablo 1 it was the rogue, d2 I played the necro(bonespear ftw!), and this one I thought I was thinking about the wizard or the demon hunter.

Normally wizard/spell caster is where most of the eye candy is..atleast that was the popular opinion among me and my buddies here, so most people would pick wizard..the rest would take the barbarian cause he is the strongest physically.

I dont really like melee characters..just dont seem as interesting (fighter/paladdin/barbarian), but the monk seems quite nice for some reason.

i always usually go wizard or spell caster, but i am thinking of barbarian or monk atm due to everyone wanting to go spell caster, and from what i have seen in the beta the wizard looks easy.

I may even go the witch doctor to have a few friends while i am playing. Either way i can't wait for this game to come out, much to my wife's disgust!...

Barbarian! Partly cause it isn't picked much by the community, and partly cause I have always loved melee combat over range.

Ironically, thou I love my warrior and feral druid far more, it was only with a mage and resto druid did I hit Gladiator in WoW... So if I'm terrible at Barbarian, I know I'll switch out just to min/max myself =PPP

In Diablo 2, i loved the Necro the most, followed by the Druid and Assassin... Liked the odd classes. From the sounds of this, Monk would be my favourite.. Demon Hunter looks fun, but im not much of a crossbow guy.

I'd probably have to play Witch Doctor or Monk. Either way this will be awesome. Barbarian looks so sick.

Going to go with the monk. I played D2 as a sorceress and made an amazon too and now i want to try out a more close combat character but barbarians are just too brutish for my liking.

Monk most likely, I tired watching the diablo 3 beta streams of people playing them but to be honest all the streams aren't that fun to watch. It's kind of like watching LoL which i do play occasionally.

I used to play Necromancer in D2 cus its like the most relaxing character, you can just summon minions and walk around w/o having to click your mouse like crazy as a Barb or other classes of melee unit. WIth doctor is probably the closest resemblance to a Necro in D3 but it just looks strange and squeaky not even standing up straight. That's why I voted for Wizard because its a non melee unit who looks cool and also have awesome skills.

Jump, Jump, Jump around. I was hoping for something that could do sentry FFs with an immortal's weapon. Don't think there is anything like that. Guess I'll just go demon hunter, cos of the machine gun stuffs.

i have played through the beta as monk and demon hunter so far, demon hunter seemed a lot more fun to me, the way the dual mana thing works is really really fun and awesome.

have played through with monk and demon hunter in the demo. the demon hunter seems so much more interesting and fun. the monk is weird cause you dont actually use your weapons at all, which kinda sucks imo. also the demonhunters mana+rage thing is awesome.

still undecided on class though... probably barb i think.

O_o Whoever said the witch doctor was OP wasn't bloody wrong!!

I just did a 39 monster massacre... my highest with any of the other characters was about 18ish...
