Oseanic StarCraft 2 Championship Series

Click the image to open in full size.

The GamerBet Weekly Open is a partnered tournament of the Oseanic StarCraft 2 Championship Series (OSC). The OSC is the Oceanic, South East Asian, North American and Chinese regional championship, which follows a yearly season format, where players earn points for placing in all partnered tournaments.

The top 32 players ranked via the OSC Player Leader board at the end of the season are then invited to play in the 2 day minimum $5000+ Grand Finale to determine the yearly champion! OSC World Rankings were established in December 2012.

In 2014 OSC partnered tournaments gave away $29691 combined prizepool, ($ bounties, Terran Bonus initiative, Invitationals, and LAN events were not included in this!), we had 155 completed partnered tournaments (up from 77 last year, which equates to 100% growth), and saw 358 individual players with points earned (up from 138 in 2013 = 159% growth)

Current season rankings and database can be viewed here

GuMiho was 2014's Champion, taking out the $3500 finals series.
PiG was 2013's Champion, taking out the $2100 finals series.

Looks fun but...

I know myself and others have complained about other tournament start times, but this is just unrealistic even for most die-hard OSC points lovers~ ;_;

I understand it is hard for most ANZ players, but in order to grow and bring more attention and players into our league, we must offer opportunities to other regions around the world, and encourage participation. Doing so may bring new fans and opportunities to our core player base.

It's another option for those who are the most #dedicated

Yeah they are great! Loved some of the Chinese stuff they done lately. Look forward to this being a regular gig for them, and we may see them do some other OSC tournaments from time to time

My main concern is this is weekly and 120 OSC Points to the winner might be too much im all for SEA getting more attention but if its 120 per week and someone wins every week for a month they get into top 32 far too easily it also hurt's SEA players imo most of whom cant really play at this Time

I thought Wally was referring to Azure's comment re maintenance...

I believe that the admins have decided to push tonight's cup back 1 hour (2am AEST/6pm CEST) to avoid the issue. Not great for SEA players, but it's the situation we have.

I think you'll struggle to find recent examples where the same guy dominates open events like this, and wins heaps of titles, especially in a row. Only one that comes to mind is GuMiho in Leifeng, but that hasn't featured any ot the top EU/NA talent, or even the highest tier Koreans. Look at Masters Cup, Go4SC2, etc. Sure in SEACrafts and stuff EnDerr wins more than his fair share, but that's because of the much smaller player base, and it not always attracting other top SEA + global stars regularly. Different situation here.

Keep in mind that there are/should be plenty of other tournaments SEA players can earn points in, many in more favourable times for us.

I have more and more players from all regions asking about OSC tournaments, can they signup, get points etc. Players want to get involved, and our rankings/leauge is building it's recognition as a result. The more OSC grows with our partners, the more SC does as a whole, and so does the SEA region, and things we can do for our players.

And i think some people may be using the timezone as an excuse (I'll exclude NZ).
I'll be one of the first to tell you sleep is important, but even if you have school/work or both in the morning (most likely start 9-10), keep in mind it's single elim, you could signup get your participation, play a few rounds, get good practice, possible bounties, and even if you are knocked out 2-3 hours in, that might give you 4 hours sleep. That's decent. I've got by on less many, many times.

Or another option, take a nap before the tournament.
Or another option, do an all nighter. You'd be surprised how much you can still do if you push yourself to do 24-30+ hour days. It wont hurt in the short term. I've done this many times (probably those who do shift work can relate), and infact i did it last night. I've done it while working and studying the same day.

And sure it's different for everyone, and perhaps you don't want to cut sleep. The point is the option is there for those who want to go real hard at making the top 32, get better/possibly some sort of future/earning in SC, or just want the competition. You have the choice.

As i've already talked about earlier it's important to run events that enable other regions to get involved in OSC to continue our growth, and the flow through effects this will have on our players.

Not sure if i'll be able to make it tonight, given the 1 hour push back, but i might have a nap before and see how we go. If not, i'll be very likely for next week normal time.

Some complaints are understandable but I'm really impressed how OSC recently started to partner with many good global tournaments.
Personally I don't want to cut sleep but I'd play when I don't have to wake up early. (I'm the type who needs a nice long sleep)

Yes, I'm also a big fan of Tenshi and Zeweig's work casting the Kung Fu Cup and GPL (Chinese WCS). Even with the timezone differences I've managed to catch a few streams and enjoyed it a lot!

Even when they have to deal with a re-stream of a Chinese broadcast, they do a top job.

I'm actually really excited to see more collaboration between the OSC and eSportsHeaven. I've got a lot of respect for those guys and their coverage of Chinese SC2.
