The SC2 scene in Sydney has been a bit quiet ever since the monthly CityHunter tournaments stopped (due to Arnor no longer working there) and many Sydney top contenders retired (tgun/rossi/mafia/ninja/hut/iaguz to root etc).


I'm wondering if there's any interest for a competitive SC2 tournament in Sydney...

Are there still Sydney peeps who want to play?
How important is a big prize pool?
What prize pool would make you interested in playing?
Any other conditions/requirements/requests?


I think tournaments like these are an awesome way to be interactive in the community. It gives people a chance to meet in person, share stories, tips, hang out, etc. I've met many interesting and awesome people in the same way, and think it would be a shame if these died out altogether.

If there's enough interest, I'll do my best to find out a way to get one up and running, maybe in May some time. Despite Sydney having no competitive tournaments lately, the uni sc2 scene is pretty big! I'm sure we can all work together to get something going.

NOTE: Yes, I know ACL Sydney is in July, but other than that there's nothing going on in Sydney for the rest of the year.

Definitely interested and yeah the uni's are pretty big, the SCS group actually have quite a bit of stuff happening.

Canberra has a nice little community you can tap in to at the same time. Djvillian and I always used to go to CityHunter LANs.

Prize Pool isn't a huge deal, but I'd definitely like there to be SOMETHING on the line.

Id be keen to help out, trouble is im not really sure if any cafe in Sydney these days is equipped for a sc2 lan, FBI has gone down the drain, CH is currently closed for refurbishment, I did hear Intime has reopened under new ownership so perhaps its worth giving them a shot? Failing that Intergate? (the one under Maccas on George St opposite Event cinemas).

I believe LoLSoc used InTime for their LAN event at the start of the semester. Don't know how that ended up though.

it would be cool if we could have a lan format where you don't get knocked out 20 minutes in and do nothing for the rest of the lan

some more casual modes like ffa would be sick, less pressure, more casual. maybe some 4v4?

I have been mulling this idea over for a while! We have hardly any formalized competitive scene, but we have the demand for it!

Macquarie University, Sydney allows the computing society (NOT the Collegiate Society, due to a lack of formalization as a 'society' within Macquarie specifically) to lease the atrium for large-scale LAN's, which are great, but often the range of interests/games played is so diverse that formalized 'competition' is impossible. Given that we already have a wide range of university students within a conglomerate, formal 'society', I am confident that we would be able to lease the atrium for the same purpose... (They also supply large-scale infrastructure, i.e. 100+ slot ethernet boards available)

Further, given the current active and dedicated base and pre-existing sponsors of the Sydney Collegiate Society, I am sure that it is capable of accruing the capital and marketing the event well enough to gather enough participants in order to mitigate the initial cost and (hopefully) provide for awesome prizes/goodies as incentives.

Of course, casters, volunteers, administrators, graphics whizzes and everything in between would be very much appreciated - the most effective avenue for us to us all to get the benefit of a proper tournament/lan experience is through a little input by each of us =D

Granted this is mostly conjecture, but it is definitely worth pursuing further!



PS. If we were unable to establish a lease of the facilities, we could always try tee up with the computing society, who have a prior arrangement for subsidization! I'm sure they'd be more than happy to accomodate a more specific and arranged tournament structure - their events are well run, heavily funded, very social and have great infrastructure, but lack that competitive scene!

I don't think MacU will work, mostly because byo PC LANs suck. Everyone hates lugging their PCs around, transport is a massive issue, and you'll get 10% of the turnout you'd otherwise get.

The computing society gets subsidised parking when they run their events, so transporting PC's is manageable + the atrium is outfitted with beanbags and the like, so a 2 day overnight event can be run, making the trip worthwhile!

from experience... the sc2 lan crowd seems to be less interested in byopc and overnight lans than a lot of others. There was one time that SGL advertised there SC2 comp through here, but there was not a lot of positive feedback afterwards.

Hey guys, tiny update:

Elison/Infurneaux from SCS has been looking for a good place to hold a competitive LAN in Sydney. FBI at Chinatown was used as a test place but was so unreliable in terms of service that its not really an ideal place to hold a competitive LAN. So the search continues! Hope to check out the newly refurbished CityHunter on Sussex St when it reopens.

In the meantime, SCS have been holding fun social LANs, from which I have learned that I am gosu at CS1.6 :P If you're in Sydney and want to hang out, definitely rock up to the next social LAN they hold.
