[TGS]Petraeus to Japan; pulls huge upsets vs Jazbas & Stellar
Mack 'Petraeus' Smith of team Iris has pulled off one of the greatest upsets in StarCraft II history as he steals the spotlight from two Zerg superstars, Sung Thomas 'Jazbas' Cho of team Gamecom-Nv and Caviar 'Stellar' Acampado of team BenQ-Mineski, in the Philippines-New Zealand joint qualifier tournament of Asian E-Sports Cup (AEC).
At the start, many saw him enter the tournament as a dark horse to win the whole thing, fans were favoring Jazbas or Stellar in taking the championship prize of taking a trip to Japan for the AEC grand finals. The qualifier tournament held last Saturday, August 18, was a double elimination tournament with each match being best-of-three. At the winners bracket semifinals, Petraeus was dropped into the losers bracket by Jazbas.
Jazbas and Stellar then faced off in the winners bracket finals ending up with Jazbas taking the series with a 2-1 score. Petraeus in the losers bracket then eliminated his next oppopent, Cenon 'Xenos' Mayor Jr. from team Pacific, to retrack his path into the finals where Jazbas was already waiting. In the losers bracket finals, Stellar stood before Petraeus and both were hungering for a rematch against the New Zealand Zerg king.
To the disappointment of many Filipino fans rooting for Stellar, Petraeus blazed through the Pinoy bonjwa with a clean 2-0 score and stepped into the grand final ring for the final battle. In the final match, Petraeus needed to grab two consecutive best-of-three match wins.
In the first best-of-three set, Petraeus pulled another 2-0 sweep for Jazbas.
In the last and final set, Jazbas took away the winning momentum of Petraeus and grabbed the victory on the first map.
However, Petraeus didn't want the championship gold to slip away from his clutches and finally wiped Jazbas off the final match with a 2-1 score.
Results:
1st Place: Mack 'Iris.Petraeus' Smith (trip to Japan + accomodation)
2nd Place: Sung Thomas 'GAMECOM-Nv.Jazbas' Cho
3rd Place: Caviar 'BenQ-Mski.Stellar' Acampado
While its a big win for pet, im not sure if "upset of sc2 history" is quite accurate. Pet has been beating players like mafia pig jaz in a number of tournaments for awhile now, he was one of the favorites, if not the favorite, to win this qualifier.
Less of an upset, more of Pet being severely underrated.
Exactly what fenner said. Petraeus has beaten Jaz in the past, but more notably he practices a LOT. He improves more quickly than most in SEA and its definitely starting to show.

Word. Being young AND practicing a lot has its benefits. Practice hard and own it up and Tokyo lil Pet

1) he's already beaten jaz before, so not that massive an upset
2) biggest upset in history is more like when MMA goes on twitter and posts ????? after losing to goody
3) its zvz
4) he's not goody
(still a big win though, just taking my time to poo-poo the language)
I think Dippa pretty much summed it up; not a "WTFUPSET?!" but still a big win and not what people were expecting, for sure.
Very good play, I caught some of the games. Good luck in Japan.
Was watching the games in all their 4:3 glory, very solid play! Some unorthodox stuff like skipping Metabolic Boost to get an uber fast Lair was really interesting. Congratulations and good luck in Tokyo! Make sure you squeeze in as much practice as you can in the meantime!
More study mack haha good luck mate. First big opportunity to represent your team and your country on a international stage. I wish you the best of luck ^^
Have to admit your series really got me going, waking up the family again hahaha
