I would prefer players that I knew personally (not from other grades) just to make organising easier and quicker

this, my team consists of players from every year level. I have a facebook group to keep in contact with everyone and each week I contact people through that.

lol I'm pretty sure my school is fairly academic and sporting focused as well but surprisingly there was quite a large turnout of people when I advertised for starcraft. you may be surprised as well.
But yeah as mentioned it is a friendly tournament, most of the teams have similar leagues as well. Its encouraged for the bigger teams to play players of similar skill levels anyways, as honestly its not fun for either player to play with a massive skill gap. Even with my team I try to match the leagues up as close as I can. Bottom line is you shouldn't worry too much about players being beaten about, the bigger teams should be playing similar leagues to accommodate you.
