The thing is usually you have half the teams in the final (4 of 8, etc) but because there are 10 teams you're going to have to go with just under or just over half.

Might as well go over half so teams have more to play for towards the end of the season (and avoid potential walkovers where teams who can't make top4 don't show up).

In my opinion, play-offs are made for elite teams in the league.
In the NBA only the top teams go to playoffs, not 50% of them.
If we allow 6 out of 10 teams to go for play-offs, it negates the importance of the league games.

Last season we had 12 teams and only 4 of them going to play-offs and that was fine for me.

del's suggestion is interesting, it does encourage all the teams to keep pushing until the end though instead of giving up half way

Cheers for the input so far guys. I like the discussion so far, so we'll talk about it some more. If we went for 6 teams in the finals, it would be a lot more like the Season 1 playoffs (which we had a no-show at T_T) but I can see it working. 4 teams makes sure that this will be the most elite of contests (as far as BSG goes anyway) and can work just as well. I see good points to both formats now.

Would be awesome to add an in-thread poll here it would make the more popular choice a lot more clearer. Anyway, keep up the discussions

LOL stick to the 4 teams format KISS no point making it harder than it is. Also i think someone stated that teams give up halfway through. Dnt know bout you guys but tcp has been 5th and under and had many bad things happen, but we aint giving up quietly- perhaps its a lack of passion?.

Anyway Tadel i saw what u did by suggesting top six teams O.O :P

Format 1 imo...
Rank 1 and 2 teams have an advantage (as they should - big effort in getting top two spots)... 3rd and 4th have a chance - But as I suggested in the week 9 thread I think some advantage should be given to the higher ranked teams in the match up.

EG; 1st and 2nd play, in sequence
1) 1st selects the first map,
2) 2nd selects their first player,
3) 1st selects their first player and losers pick on map and player from there.

This gives the 1st place team the ability to pick a map that they have plenty of practice on - Then the advantage of being reactionary to the player (and race) of the 2nd placed teams first selection.. giving them the edge to pick a player that has a good match up to that race.

Additionally, the First format produces more interesting games.. 1st round semi's has the top two teams squaring off for the finals spot - an epic game, then (most likely) after other semi's are done there is a chance at a big rematch between those two teams..

deL suggestion is interesting.. but there is no difference between placing 3rd and 6th... Perhaps a similar higher seed advantage of 1st map and 2nd player selection could be given in these games...?

Top 4 for this season, I know by saying that it probably knocks TA out of the finals (that of which I would love to play in, mainly to drag out the BSG to closer to Xmas), but that's what we get and probably ToR.
I mean if Fade B lose this week and ToR and TA win, we will all finish on 4 wins and close in w/l ratio.
Which could make it quite interesting for Season 3, as I feel this season the teams have been much closer.

If the admins/casters want to end it early go for Format 2, but Format 1 I think it better in the fact that top 2 is something to aim for, as it gives you that advantage.

If you were to go for Top 6
Week 1:
Rank 1 & 2 have a bye
Game 1: Rank 3 v Rank 4
Game 2: Rank 5 v Rank 6

Game 3: Rank 1 v Winner Game 2
Game 4: Rank 2 v Winner Game 1

Game 5: Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 4

In sport usually the higher seeded/ranked team gets to play on their home ground, which I think we could accurately represent with choice of map #1

Good idea if 6 teams are picked for playoffs - BUT I do think 3rd vs 6th, 4th vs 5th... as otherwise there is no difference between placing 3rd or 5th... (or 3rd and 6th - if a higher seed advantage isn't used...)

Match 1: 2 vs 3, Match 2: 4 vs 5
Match 3: Winner M1 plays #1, Match 4: Loser M1 plays winner M2, Loser M2 is out.
Winner M3 to Grand Final. Loser M3 plays Winner M4. Loser M4 is out.
Match 5: Winner M3 vs Winner M5
Quite long winded, but gives #1 the biggest advantage, 2 and 3 a double chance in playoffs, and 4 and 5 play in an elimination match. Higher seed always gets first map pick..

I was actually referring to Format 1 - 3 weeks of finals where the top teams get a double chance rather than sudden knockout in Format 2.

If I remember correct, it was 6 teams in the playoffs, with the top 2 getting a bye in the first week. Not completely sure though.

After reading the discussion above, I really think it needs to be kept simple. Let's not complicate it and turn it into the AFL finals series which ends up rewarding mediocrity.

Traditional finals reward the top two by giving them a double chance for their efforts over the season whilst the next two have a chance of making it through to the final and winning. This is how most finals are done, hockey, soccer etc.

Thus my vote is firmly entrenched with Format 1 that Maynarde posted earlier.

You don't have to have 1 week per round, I say don't let the playoffs go over 2 weeks. Just make it round 1 saturday, round 2 sunday, and then grand finals the next sunday.

Or have the finals all within a day (Saturday/Sunday) but keep the series to Bo7

Just looked over the formats once again - neither actually give the top two teams a reward for finishing top. So with that in mind, the following gives the top two teams a double chance (I actually missed this in relation to my other comments and this is what I was talking about!):

Standardised Finals

Semi Final 1: Rank 1 vs. Rank 2 - Winner qualifies for Grand Final; Loser plays Winner of SF2

Semi Final 2: Rank 3 vs. Rank 4 - Winner plays loser of SF1; Loser is eliminated from Finals and places 4th

Preliminary Final: SF1 Loser v SF2 Winner - Winner goes into Grand Final; Loser is eliminated and finishes 3rd

Grand Final: SF1 Winner v PF Winner - Winner is Champion of BSGCL Season 2; Loser finishes in 2nd place

I like this format, as it rewards first spot!
KA & Fade A are gonna be hard to beat and makes the games this week extremely interesting as there are movements that could matter!
However doesn't it feel like we are just trying to get Rank 1 v Rank 2 into the finals, if so why not just do that!
