When I first came to be among the awesome people of this site I posted a thread. A thread where I showed my skills in cooking by creating a Protoss Nexus cake. Today I raise the bar by making a spawning pool cake for my friend who is has recently had a birthday.
Behold...
The cake was made in four parts.
Part 1. The cake itself.
Part 2. The creep: Normal butter based icing giving it the shape and colour of creep.
Part 3. A fondant pool: Most of my artistic skills are demonstrated here.
Part 4. Lime (green) jelly to fill the spawning pool.
I plan to enjoy this thoroughly

As YurickHarmon describes it is definitely more feel than it is a recipe but I can provide the instructions to make it. Be warned it will not turn out exactly like this one and the spawning pool will vary in appearance based on artistic skill.
Step 1. The cake: Any cake recipe will suffice for this part, I used a box mix (it's not cheating it's just easier). Pay attention however to what cake mix you use, remember the spawning pool will have lime jelly in it (knowing this I modified my cake recipe to be a lemon and coconut cake rather than plain or chocolate). Cook the cake in a circular container about 20cm in diameter then leave to cool.
Step 2. The icing (creep): you will need 1 1/4 cups of icing sugar (sifted), 200g of butter or margarine and flavouring of your choice (1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for a vanilla icing, some freshly squeezed lemon juice for lemon icing, etc.. ), beat these ingredients together until it forms an icing consistency. During this ate also add food colouring to give your icing a creep colour (I used liquid based food colouring in the colours of black, red and blue... remember creep is grey with just a hint of purple so you'll use a lot more black food colouring than purple (blue and red)).
P.S. Food colouring is very strong so a lot of food colouring is a lot less than one might initially think. If you have not played around with food colouring before I strongly suggest you mess around with the dyes in water to get a feel for it. Also don't spill half the bottle of red food colouring on the floor like I did, it's a pain to clean up.
Step3. Spread Creep: Once your cake is cool spread the icing all over it. The best part about this cake is that the icing is supposed to look like creep so you don't have to smooth it... rather the opposite.
Step 4. Make the Spawning Pool: This part will require most of your artistic talent. Buy fondant or a solid but mouldable icing of some description and colour it the following colours: dark purple, greyish purple (slightly lighter than the other purple), light grey, white and one bold colour (yellow in my case cause I play yellow for all races in SC2).*
Using a rolling pin roll out the base of the pool in dark purple fondant. Cut out the desired base shape using a knife and remove the unwanted fondant. Build up around the outside of the spawning pool with the fondant to make the wall. Next get the greyish purple icing and work up around the outside of the spawning pool until you have a reasonable height wall around the spawning pool. Get the white fondant and roll it out thinly. Coat the inside of the pool (at least the base of the pool) in this. This is done so that when the jelly is added it will look exceptionally green. Make spiky teeth out of the grey fondant and place them around the edge of the pool like on a normal spawning pool. Using the last of the dark purple icing make the tentacles and intestine that are found on the base but outside of the pool. Finally with your bold coloured icing place a small ring around the top of every tentacle so you know which player owns the spawning pool.
When complete place the fondant spawning pool in the freezer (ensure it is coved so it doesn't get unwanted ice on it) and let it solidify so it becomes hard, cold and unmouldable.
P.S. Make sure that the pool is not larger than your cake and do all fondant work on baking or nonstick paper. This part make be tricky if you haven't worked with fondant before but it is fun.
Step 5. Filling Up the Pool: The most boring part and the part that requires the most attention. Make lime jelly as you ordinarily would (buy it from your store, add hot water to melt sugar/gelatine then cold water to cool it down). Put jelly in fridge. Pay attention at this point. We want the jelly to almost become jelly but still be a liquid so we can pour it into the fondant pool. If the jelly is too watery we risk melting the sugar and destroying our fondant spawning pool. I found it took about 3 hours for the jelly to reach the consistency I wanted but it will vary based on your fridge. Once the jelly is a watery jelly consistency add it to your frozen spawning pool and place it in your fridge until the jelly has set. Place the fondant spawning pool on top of the creep cake and your done. Keep cake in fridge until ready to serve.
