Hello Everyone. This may seem like a stupid question but I’m wondering what methods people use to create army control groups and which is the best? Keep in mind I am a terran if that makes any difference. I am having a lot of trouble microing a large army against protoss so I really need to get all these control groups going, but I often find myself fumbling around misclicking whilst trying to create control groups which ruins my macro and just generally wastes time which I could be doing other things.
For Example, if you wanted to get your marines, marauders and medivacs together do you:
Double click the marines, then shift double click marauders and medivacs OR
Control click, then shift control the other units OR
Am I missing something else?
Do you click on the actual units or the unit bars down the bottom? (I was thinking maybe you would click down the bottom for ghosts for example, as they can be hard to find in your army quickly sometimes)
I just want to know the quickest and most efficient way to do this in game as I often cannot do this quick enough and it affects other areas of my gameplay.
1) As miles said. CTRL + CLICK is ALWAYS superior to double-clicking. It does the exact same thing but is 10x more accurate and faster.
2) Just dragging boxes is preferable if you want to put everything on the same hotkey
3) Actually selecting the units on-screen is usually preferable to clicking down the bottom.
4) Have your ghosts on a seperate hotkey, tabbing or trying to click in your army or in your bottom bar is unreliable and will take too long
edit: (clicking bottom bar is great...but only for organisation not for in-battle micro, that's where hotkeys, dagging boxes and ctrl clicking onscreen are much better
Cheers fellas. Will get that control clicking going. Just wanted some confirmation on what people were doing. It can get very complex when you want separate hotkeys for mm, ghosts and vikings so I wanted to know how I can do it efficiently.
Jimdiddy got to top GM with out using control groups - it can be done!.. >.<
(re-ProAnnn rep: afaik he'd hotkey like a hatch or two.. and just box everything.
I think the most efficient way is definitely to ctrl + click, but on the box at the bottom.
and for a Terran, I think having ghosts and vikings on a separate hotkeys is a MUST. You will still use the select and click on the screen, for splitting and moving units.
Same thing would go for if you are going for mech play.
Personally, I have fast units on 1 hotkey, slow units on another hotkey, and spell casters on another.
Also Shift+ %hotkey number% will add the selected units to a hotkey group... so select recently rallied marines and shift+1 to make your 1a-ing easier.
As chad pointed out... brain fart there on my part ><

Cheers Erasmus. Another good tip.
Will try to utilise this as well. Basically I've got to masters using very minimal army control groups lol (bad habit), but now against higher level people I really need to use them more. Now I'm really trying to focusing on getting it down to further my play.
Good point Neova, I was thinking maybe click down the bottom for ghosts since they can be hard to see in the heat of battle sometimes.
On a similar note, if you have a control group with 3 types of units in it and say you only want 2 types, is there an easy way to quickly remove them from the group?
Always shits me when infestors find themselves on 1

select the group that they are in, then ctrl+shift click the unit type then rebind is what i do.

control+click to select all of one unit type
control+shift+click to add all of one unit type to selection
control+click on portraits (bottom centre of user interface) to select all of one unit type currently in selection
control+shift+click on portraits to deselect all of one unit type currently in selection
(if you accidentally hotkey some scvs with your army, you can just deselect them like this and redefine the control group)
control+number to define a control group as the currently selected units
shift+number to add currently selected units to control group

shift+ctrl+click on the infestor image in bottom display bar (green picture), removes all festors from the selection and you can then renumber
