I'm curious as to whether anyone on this website is a member of Macquarie University. I'm starting there in 2012 and am looking at taking over the almost non-existant starcraft group there and setting it up as an actual student group affiliated with Macquarie University.
This thread is pretty much just to gauge whether there is any interest from members of this website.
Yep. Started undergrad there in 2004. finishing masters and starting phd soon in the chem dept (cbms to the politically correct). There a couple of players doing phds in the dept, not sure what other depts are like or what the undergrads are like. And yes the current society is crap. I didnt find out about the tournament they held last year until fairly recently.
Hey man, I was going to set up a Starcraft society for macquarie next year in association with the UNSW and USYD ones after Eugene (the guy that runs the...unsw one?) asked around a bit. If you wanted we could work together to get this started ^.^ We can get some of the guys from the computing society to help out...they're the ones that are running all the gaming tourneys at the moment. (:
Once its all put together and running, would be worthwhile seeing if you can get some support from the uni. depending on numbers and amount of activity, can either have a it as a social society or perhaps as a team, going through the sports route (each have their own eligibility requirements, but I wouldn't know who to ask). Of course there are also advantages to having independence from the uni. Goodluck, and keep us in the loop.

Will definitely try to keep everyone in the loop.
I'm not sure what the difference between the society and team is. I know with the society it pretty much just gives you access to one of the buildings on campus and you can get some funding from the uni as well as advertise around the uni.

It used to be that you needed a minimum number of registered students to officially become a society with the perks of buildings and money. Im not sure what that number is exactly but I don't think it would be all that large. Of course, now would be the time to chat to people about getting a stall setup for O-Week, that way you can much more easily get people to sign up. O week is the first week back, do you happen to know when that is? If I get a chance tonight, I'll have a look for some more information. The team would be different as it would need to be a competitive team with regular matches I would say. Easiest thing there might be to see if the other Unis are interested in an inter-collegiate season? I'd say do whats easy first, maybe check out whether it's too late to ask for a stall during O week, and then maybe in the future when it's on its feet can consider becoming a competitive team.
Ok, so below is a link to the FAQ regarding student groups. Unfortunetely, the link regarding 'information for setting up a student group' is not working, although it might be back up later. Sometimes they just go down. I think student groups are generally overseen by Campus Experience, so I've put their phone number there as well. Maybe give them a call and ask about what's required for setting up a group and if you want to do anything for O-week, you can ask them too. Feel free to ask me anything, I'll help were I can, but am going to be pretty flat out at least for the next few weeks. I don't actually know anything, but I'm good with google :P.
Thanks heaps for the effort you've put in Drgoose to help. I've had a look at the information for setting up a studenty group already and there's a few things that we'll need to do that might take a little bit of time. Because of this, during O-week, rather then setting up a stall or anything like that we'll just wander around and hand out some things or maybe put up a couple of posters around the place, just try to get awareness up. From what i've read it seems as if it's only the macquarie affiliated student groups that are allowed to participate in the O-week stuff and it doesn't look like we'll be affiliated until the first few weeks of the semester.
As far as I'm aware there is going to be an Australian version of the CSL that's going to be run this year by the APL (the guys who've been running the sydney barcrafts) and they're just in the process of getting more uni's on board.
