I have only played about 10 hours total of Starcraft 2, so I am a bit of a newbie, and I'm looking for advice on general play tips, how to analyze your replays and figure out what you can improve on, how to improve in general.
I already know:
- to use hotkeys
- a basic understanding of each tech tree and race mechanics
- to use build orders
- etc. (the very basics)
Any help, advice or links to good tutorials/guides will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
PS: Should I play Terran or Protoss, as a new player?
PPS: If this post is in the wrong place, please let me know.
Thanks guys. I checked out Day9's channel and watched a bit of his 'Newbie Tuesday' videos - there's stuff I never even would have thought of. I'll be sure to follow his stream more closely.
And thanks for the help on choosing race, I'm leaning towards Terran at the moment but I'll set up two identical AI matches, play them through and ultimately make a decision tomorrow.
After tentatively settling upon Protoss as my favoured race, I did a little research into the race in general, watched some vids and read a few guides, and played a few AI practice matches against random opponents. I won the AI matches easily and went online for a league match to try out my build against a REAL opponent, and... lost. But that's okay, I wasn't expecting to win my first real Protoss game. I did, however, save the replay, and uploaded it so that I might get some feedback on what to do better next time.
You don't need to cut econ early on, and you want to get your probe numbers up early.
Rushing colossi is also extremely fragile, you'd likely be better off getting up 4+ gates after expanding and getting a comfortable amount of gateway units with spotting obs before bringing up colossi.
if you want to be decently good, you have to have good mechanics first and foremost.
1. learn hotkeys. they are very important. you could have an overseer somewhere that you spend searching for 10 seconds so you can kill that dark templar. after you find it, you realise your main force is already decimated. it speeds up production. you can hotkey all your barracks and make troops off them much faster.
2. learn keyboard shortcuts. A for marine and D for marauder, S for SCV etc. it makes life much easier than clicking.
once you get mechanics right, you can progress to other stuff like build orders, learning what units counter other units, scouting etc. don't be discouraged, you will see a truckload of cheese(unorthodox/funny) build orders that catch you off guard. learn to overcome them. when you are decently good you can start reading on more specific and in-depth stuff. like some really good players actually know specific info, eg recently i just found out from people on the chatbox how many shots a zealot needs to kill a zergling, and that getting armor upgrade makes the zergling 50% more resistant to being killed!!
