I've been toying with the idea of having a ELO ladder for the users of this site. For those that don't know, the ELO system works with everyone starting at 1000 points. As you win games your score goes up, if you lose your score goes down. If you are a 900 player, playing a 1800 person and you win, you will get lots of points while the other person will lose many.
Games would include tournament games as well as challenging someone to an ELO game. Challenges can be any number of rounds. I'd be able to update the ladder each day if results are sent to me by each player and I can obtain results off BSG, GPD and other brackets. We can have ELO tournaments so people can try to improve their ranks and a chat channel for people looking for ELO matches.
Sometimes I get sick of the ladder and want to compete with people I know but there is not always a tournament on. With the ELO ladder we can always have some community competition.
I'm just wondering how many people would be interested. Can I get some replies or PMs to tell me how much support we have. Thanks.

Yeah, might be interested. How are you going to manage the points if people set up their own games? There are some absolute ***** in the world, and might not report a loss. And you can't just take one side of the game, as then people could just say they won a game without playing.
t's a good idea, but I'm not sure it'll work all that well.

Thanks for your criticism cruxis. I guess I was relying on the fact that everyone was going to be honest (I'm just that kind of person) I'm not sure how to keep it honest. If anyone has any ideas then suggest them here.

Have a quick look at cyber-gamer's SC2 ladder, might give you a few ideas. Basically their site has a function where one player officially challenges another player, then after the match they have until 11:00pm to report wins/losses, and if there's any disputes then the mods request replays from both players. If the loser doesn't repond then it's counted as a loss.
Would take a bit of work to set up, but if you did it could be a really great ladder!
the intention is great, as an idea i think it needs refinement
A: if ure going for a "scoring" type ladder to show who the best/hottest players are at the moment, what would be needed is a simlar system like the TPLD and gosugamers rankings. to prevent abuse only tournament results should be counted but yea it still takes ALOT of data entry and man power over a long period to come up with a decent size database.
but basically it brings back all the problems the bnet AMM solved.
1) selective picking of opponents, dodging games from better players, playign only weak palyers
2) each game requires manually reporting by the players, hard to find opponents, sometimes there might be disputes in results
3) XP decay problem - some players can just play 15 games and never play again and end up in top10 end of season
4) possible abuse since searching is not random and win trading can actually be quite common.
I believe last year CyberGamer tried their own ladder too and it wasnt played much. Perhaps with a really big prize pool and rules people might choose to use this alternative ladder but i dont see that happening atm
The other thing we could do is set-up a custom division on sc2ranks.com. It's simply a comparison of everyone's leagues and points, but is interesting to see exactly where everyone is in comparison.
Keeping it honest would be easy, it would just take a little bit of work.
Replays where both players have to say "THIS IS AN ELO GAME" or something at the start could work but it would take up too much time.
I think the idea where the players must post on the forum after the game, and if disputed by either player, the replay must be shown, both players typing something about themselves agreeing to it being an ELO game. Probably would need to punish players who waste your time with disputes too
