Smurfs in general

Let me preface this by saying I wasn't disappointed in losing to Hillboy (an accused smurf) in the last BSG. I lost to him because I made the wrong decisions and he was a good player, and I haven't said anything different to friends or others.

I'm disappointed in the starcraft 2 community. As a comparative newbie to the competitive side of rts' I bought sc2 with the aim of getting better and reaching a high level. I placed in bronze (watching the games now all I can think is epic fail) and then played, lots. And watched replays, and talked with other players to learn. About 4 months after buying the game I got promoted with 20+ over the w/l ratio and a lot of hope for my playing future. Moments before playing in the last bsg (my third) I was promoted to gold while warming up. I felt this was the culmination of many many hours of play and practise.
Basically, I've played a lot (considering what my life is like) and ended up being an okay player.

So when tournaments appear and are won by someone with 5 games played in total and a profile on sc2sea made yesterday I can only sum up my feelings by saying I'm disappointed and annoyed. I don't think I'll be entering another BSG, as a goal to reach the semi's or finals is soured when I know I'll be playing someone beyond the level of a gold. I'm not accusing oGsNada directly, but merely pointing out that playing under one's level to win in tourneys is ridiculously common place. So thank you sc2, thank you for creating a system that allows this.

Again, I didn't play Nada and I'm not annoyed about losing to Hillboy. The admins are also blameless in that there's no real way of telling who's a master smurfer and who's simply a good gold before the tourney. I guess I'm saying to everyone out there who's considered smurfing to not. It's just a terrible thing and devalues all tourneys with set skill ceilings. Good luck to everyone in the GPD tonight and future BSG's, I hope one day you can enter knowing who you're playing.

I didn't say hillboy was. I said he was accused to be. Personally I know I could've been in an equal position to him if I had made the right decisions in-game. But oGsNada...well I was disappointed in seeing the results. I know from Ned's profile that he was probably the best legitimate player in the tourney. But having looked at Nada's profile on sc2 and here I was nothing but angry that he entered.

I think atleast to enter in tournaments you should be a member or sc2sea for 2 weeks or so.

As for oGsNaDa in the BSG, i mean, everyone knows NaDa is an amazing pro player, why even let someone with that name attempt to play in BSG. If it was Boxer, why didn't he get on his account?

Seems like a waste or a good prize...

Yep, that would be pretty frustrating, however you can't really just blame the whole SC2 community for it. At the end of the day, SC2SEA is providing you with free tourny experience which takes time and effort to organise, all just for the community. Personally, I think that's pretty rad.

Secondly, the game is pretty young, as are the tournaments. As the tournament gets older, they will almost certainly figure new ways of weeding out potential smurfs. In addition, when you look at the major prize being a replay analysis by a high level player, a great prize for most from the BSG group, is not much to someone who is genuinely smurfing. As such, you can probably see any potential smurfers getting pretty bored, pretty quick.

So keep entering, and keep having fun! You're only in Gold; we aren't playing for money after all. Losing is frustrating for everyone, but it's going to happen to you, even in masters.

EDIT:
Didn't realise the cogs are already in motion -

I don't really see a point in smurfing to play in BSG, the only reason i can think of is that the smurf has pretty much hit a wall at his standard of play, being unable to progress any further, taking out his rage on lower level players to raise his own self-confidence. Also, I'm pretty sure that a player at Masters level can tell if someone from gold is smurfing.

We've been having a lot of truble with smurfs recently, and Im going to get into the habit of DQing people or not letting them enter again if their skill level is above BSG standard. Yes, BSG is a learning environment and you can learn from losing to guys who are really good like that, but that hasn't been our goal. The goal is to have a learning environment styled tournament where players of similar low level skill can learn. The more BSGs we've been having, the further we have strayed from this goal.

Im casting the BSG tonight, and that will actually let me observe if people are smurfing or above BSG level a lot easier. Here are the newest rules on smurfing in the BSGs:

From this point foward the following behaviour will result in an instant irreversible permenant site ban:
1)
Registration with multiple accounts for the same tourney.
All accounts get perm banned, and your characterid.code will be blacklisted.

2) Anyone above BSG level of play caught smurfing, with a skill standard clearly above a BSG players level.
This includes using a friends account or having a higher then BSG level on NA and playing on SEA with your BSG account.

In addition to these official rules, if we get more smurfing in the BSGs, then we will make it so the winner cannot join another BSG. With a better prize on the line, we are going to be a lot more harsh on these rules. In every recent BSG, I have found at least one smurf account, or an attempt by a higher level player to play in the BSG.

If it gets even more out of hand, we can write down a smurf list on top of this for anyone we find, and keep it stickied in the BSG section. Not only will your sc2sea account and ability to join tournaments be on the line, but also your reputation. Want to make a new account on sc2sea.com? Well your IP address will be the same. Good luck there.

I apologize to anyone who have had smurfers destroy their BSG experience, it is our responsibility to ensure that we can keep them out.

^ Winners are already not allowed to play in the future BSG, and the bronze skill level rule.

For more information, check the BSG Tournament page.
