Smiley: Question [Z] Floating in minerals

Hi guys,

I am relatively new to playing zerg (about 2 weeks) but know the fundamentals etc. Anyway i am finding that i am struggling a great deal with keeping my minerals low as the mechanics are a lot different than terran where you can just constantly produce and build more production.

I have tried dropping numerous macro hatches, expanding etc but eventually it seems not as beneficial. I have done some research into the question i am asking and the main and most logical thing i can come up with is to throw money into static defense such as spore crawlers and spine crawlers, however this does not seem logical as this would involve either making drones (wasting lava) or pulling drones off the minerals hurting your economy.

I have also toyed around with the idea that zerg during the 'droning phase' are always going to float in minerals for at least a while and that based on the zerg mechanics that a 'bank' is desirable to re-max armies etc.

So basically in case any does not understand, i am inquiring whether having a large bank as zerg is a good or bad thing and if it is bad, how does one address this, as inevitably you're not going to have as much gas and minerals regardless and maxing on lings to burn minerals seems like a waste of lava.

Regards,

Ryrymanpie

Having a bank when your maxed is a very good thing.
You appear to be doing all the right things, throwing down macro hatches etc, so I think the problem for you floating in the early/midgame is that your mechanics are probably quite weak.

If you focus on your larva injects with your queen, and constantly use the larva as soon as it pops your money should stay a lot lower.

One thing I think would help you is if you get all your macro "thingstodo" into a rhythm/cycle, I believe day9's done a daily on this but I can't remember what its called, if any of you guys know which 1 im talking bout can you post it below ^.^

This isn't the daily, but very similar:http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...urrentpage=All

Having a large bank can be good or bad depending on the time frame. You're being a bit too vague here for us to know what's wrong.

In the earlygame, banking shouldn't happen. Inject better, make more macro hatcheries, use your army a bit more so you're maxed less often. You seem to know what to do against floating in the early game, unfortunately these things don't always apply in the unique zerg lategame. If you're floating in the early game, then you're either forgetting to do these things ingame but knowing what to do in theory (a problem I have sometimes) or you're doing something wrong mechanically (focusing too much on something other than floating, like creep spread, scouting, or army movement) or your apm is simply not high enough.

In the midgame transition into lategame (because let's face it, there is no real midgame to zerg ) it's okay to float a little bit of gas and minerals so that when hive is done you can make a lot of upgrades (3-3, greater spire/ultra cavern, possibly zergling attack speed) and to build a round of tier 3 units when your cavern/greater is done. You will probably float a LOT of minerals as compared to gas (I like to hold 3 minerals : 2 gas) so making some (maybe 10-15 in total) spines instead of lings are a good idea, as they cost basically 1 larva and 150 minerals.

In the ultra lategame, you can also float a lot simply because you want to be able to remax very quickly on roaches if you manage to trade armies, and because you're maxed a lot of the time anyways and spend more time just trying to get the most out of whatever army you have. In this scenario I've floated as much as 5k/3k in a legit game.

also, aequitas is a noob and is bad at sc2 dont ever listen to him

Throwing down a ton of crawlers when you cannot spend your minerals is a good thing as it shuts off annoying harassment at distant bases. If you're floating, maxed and you're not attacking, then what are you doing? The answer is either being bad at Zerg or transitioning into broodlord/infestor. Making crawlers also frees up supply for this. If you have 80 drones going lategame then that is enough.

What league are you in? If you're floating minerals you either
1. Need to take your gases earlier.
2. Injects better and earlier macro hatches.
3. have made to many drones to early.
4. have larvae lying around but arent spending it quick enough (closely related to injecting better)
5. Are sitting maxed and not trading, so this will happen, without putting down spines etc.
Depending on which stage of the game you're in you are more likely to be suffering from the different problems.
In the early game if you're floating minerals then you most likely aren't injecting right/getting macro hatches/3rd and depending what build you are doing you might be taking your gases to late. If its mid game then it will mostly just be not injecting/macroing properly, and if its late game then that typically happens so throw down spines and replenish with drones, or if you wish to remax slowly with brood infestor then dont replenish with drones just replenish with your desired unit. A replay would much better show which thing in particular you are doing wrong, but i'm going to assume you're below grandmaster, so you could be doing all those things better in any case.

For me, i will only have a floating bank for these scenarios:
1) I am maxed out, ready to re make army
2) I am waiting for a tech structure to be out (eg i will not build anymore mutas and play my mutas safe until my infestor pit upgrade is halfway and i make 5 of them)

I used to have a similar problem and found that the two biggest issues for me, at least were:
-Injects
-Overlords

If you're falling behind on your injects then you aren't having enough larva to produce what you should be able to. Better injects will also reduce the need for macro hatches in the early game.

Supply blocks also cause big problems with mineral floating. You always want to have an eye on that supply counter and take into account the current larva you have available when building overlords. For example, if you have 400 minerals and you're on 23/28 supply.. It may be a good idea to build an overlord as you could easily get to 28/28 from drones.
