1) How long did it take you to get from league 'x' to diamond?
2) What did you do in this time that made you improve?
3) What are key things you focused on to improve that gave you an edge in your league that got you promoted?
1. I rather use games as a marker; I played about 120 games before I got promoted to diamond.
2. 30 games from silver to gold, 30 games from gold to plat, 60 games from plat to diamond. I played roughly around 30 practice games as well.
3. Macro and reading opponents build. It took me a long time to realise that a 2nd gas at x timing meant something, while 2nd gas at y timing meant another thing, for example.
2. just played some 2v2s i think. was bronze in the 1 week i played in the beta. when game was released in july, played 5 games 1v1 and placed into platinum then stopped. played a few games some months later over a weekend and got promoted. took just under 30 games on both servers including placement.
3. heck i don't know. i learnt the 7 roach rush and mainly used it. during placements when the game first came out, i can't remember how i played. think i was using something like 2 base muta-ling.
1. like around 150 games i think?
2. watching replays and casts ( been watching HD like ages b4 i even started playing), and learn differnt strats
3. Macro and consistent scouting, scouting is the key to win, well with decent micro and macro at least
try to improve by watch replay. is only one of the way to diamond.
it's wasn't all.
the main idea. is to read the opponent strategy. and try to plan the way to rush. and the way to fall back. as from the unit produce. as long as it. terran is the hard enymie. so if you play zerg like me. you need to end terran as fast as you can. about protoss. that's easily. just only Economy Breackdown. protoss will be like a chick. but ZvZ you need lot of micro and macro.
so if you want to beat to diamond. just estimate yourself. that you are ready for them.
Ma y the Overmind be with you.

I'm Pround to be "ZERG" player, Weather another barking like, Protoss is the best Power, Terran is the Best Defender. but i won't care i believe to be here, i truth to be here, and i Feel Terrific to be here. so whatever world said. it's not come from my Heart. My Heart is "ZERG", My Spirit is "ZERG", and my Strategy is "ZERG". !!
I went to diamond in 30 odd games on NA and 70? odd on SEA. I never played SC or BW (though I was a hardcore AoE2 / AoC player years ago so I had some RTS grounding).
You can get to diamond using any strategy/unit comp with any race so long as your basic fundamentals are solid. What I am saying is that if you -
* manage your econ effectively, keeping your money as close to zero as possible without queuing units
* never get supply blocked
* have a long term plan
* scout actively / properly
you could probably get to diamond building nothing but hellions.
You should be aware of but not dependant on builds and unit comps in your play as a developing player. Sure, a "trick" will catapult you up a league - such as learning to 4gate efficiently - but basic fundamentals are what seperates strong players from one trick ponies.
Practise winning just by having more stuff. If you have the more-stuff part of sc2 solid, the attack timings, tricks and caster unit micro will be icing on the cake rather than a crutch that carries you into a league you cant compete in.
i cant really remember specifically how long it took me to get from bronze to diamond, but i can recall what i did.
Bronze to gold in 1 day off macro openings. Started practicing roach rushes in gold and still dont understand why protoss players suck vs roach openings in gold. They are not too good against them in diamond either but that's a different build. Played "standard" macro games in platinum except ZvZ. Almost all my ZvZ were 8pool crawler rushes, and only recently stopped doing those, after hitting 2800 points in diamond. That's how effective they are (they work better when im favoured compared to when im not favoured). Took me longest to get promoted from plat to diamond. Everything under 2 weeks definitely.
Getting into masters is taking me forever, though.
I got all my builds off teamliquid.net, mainly liquidpedia. Spent some time watching replays but not a whole lot, only watched replays when i was on a massive losing streak and there was obviously something wrong with my play. I hardly, if ever, watch stuff like Day9 HD or Husky.

at least a total 3k of games. i learned from the basic of BO to hotkeys are right units to counter specified built and misc. when for harassment and how to fake opp with incorrect built.
the current lack of is how to control my nerve, good scouting and good hotkeys control (APM) as i'm on laptop..
Oh the nerve thing. I know a lot of players complaining to me about that, but i played a lot of competitive games in team settings (fps gamers call them scrims) so laddering in sc2 never unsettles my nerves. Coz u dont need to take orders from a sub-squad leader or give them anyway.
In fact i think some people treat laddering like taking final exams in university or something, which is bad for your nerves. When im working on some new cheesy build i go on massive loss streaks and dont really mind that much. But thats more because i have a lack of practice partners to test the strategies on, so ladder is my only chance. And i only play like, once or maybe twice a week. So its hard to build a group of practice partners even if i source online. Oh well.
