As someone new who has just moved to Australia, what do you think of the SEA scene and how do you think you will perform in Code S?:

The SEA scene is awesome so far, a lot of friendly guys and some good players. Since the playerbase is rather small the skill level is not comparable with the European scene but there's a lot of potential to say the least. Though there always seems to be an Australian player kicking ass ( philbot in wc3 and moon-glade), I hope to see more up and coming players do good internationally!

To be honest I have to idea how I will perform in the code S tournament, I have no clue about the skill level of the other guys and I feel like I should have demolished the Code A finals but I was a bit unlucky and it's hard to prepare on maps I have barely played and vs players I do not know at all. I hope I can play some good games and that my opponents won't sit in their base behind towers and tanks and slow push with a 200/200 army.

Picture + placeholder interview from gamereplays.org. Iaguz was apparently a big name in Red Alert / COH and when he gets online again will get him to fill up his profile for sc2sea but in the mean time enjoy this nice interview from gamereplays.org!

GameReplays: Hey, Ethan "iaguz" Zugai! Before we get started with the interview, why don’t you introduce yourself by giving a little background on yourself: age, gaming career and history, where you live, your hobbies, and your involvement with the community.

Ethan Zugai: Well, I'm 18 years old, live in Sydney Australia. My gaming career can be traced back to when I was 3 years old, and my earliest memories are me playing The Lost Vikings and Dune 2. I've played a bit of almost everything, from RTS to FPS to RPG, even got a 60 in WoW once. I'm a very hardcore gamer I 'spose. I'm pretty much a nerd though, I play warhammer 40k and Bloodbowl, and dabble a bit in Warhammer fantasy. I also used to play Magic: The gathering too. My proper gaming "career" probably started in Dawn of War. I played WA and DC for a while, and was able to get to 1v1 rank 1400 with Imperial Guard which was pretty goddamn tricky seeing as they were the weakest race at the time by far. I wasn't really that great at it though. After that came Company of Heroes, where I ended up becoming the number 1 USA faction player, plus holding spots in the other 3 faction's top 15 listings. I got 2nd in the [SUPER]clan's Aus/NZ tourney, got to the quarterfinals in the first GR.org CoH: OF tourney and first place in the second tourney they did, the shining moment of my 'career' I guess you could say. Currently playing RA3. I've never played a CnC online before, but I've played the games themselves ever since CnC 1 so I knew how it worked. As for the community, I used to be a shoutcaster for CoH, and am currently an Editor for the SC2 section. As for RL, I've just finished school so I've got a bucketload of free time until University. Time spent playing Red Alert 3! Oh yeah, forgot to mention I got into the semi-finals for the RA3 beta KotH competition.

GR: So why did you get involved with the e-sports community? What is its appeal?

EZ: Well, I've always had a competitive streak in me. I've been "that guy" at parties, for instance. You know, that guy who completely trashes everyone at any game, because he's far more involved in it and spends far too much time playing them. I've always liked playing video games and improving myself etc, so I guess liking E-sports just comes naturally. I mean, if someone who likes Football a lot likes watching World Cup Soccer then I spose someone who really likes Video games enjoys watching GOMtv every Sunday. My main appeal for E-sports though is the dedication and skill. The 12-hour a day training sessions and the intense pressure. Especially since there's really bugger all reward money or fame in it (unless your SlayerS_BoxeR of course).

GR: Where do you plan to go in the future, in terms of gaming and e-sports?

EZ: I don't fully know. I'm sure I'll be getting Starcraft 2 upon release, but the competition for that is going to incredibly stiff. There's also the fact that I'm Australian and we have a very small E-sports following, so trying to get a sponsor or something is probably almost impossible. As for now, I guess I'll be playing RA3 as hard as I can and see where I go from there. I'm going into University next year too, probably just to study some shitty Arts Degree or something, so I'll probably have plenty of time for gaming. I don't really know what I want to do in life, but I know that I enjoy gaming so I'll do that as well as I can and see what happens. I got at least 3 years to decide so I'm in no hurry,.

GR: Where do you think Red Alert 3 will go as an e-sport? Why?

EZ: I don't see it doing any worse then CnC 3 did. Admittedly, I don't actually know that much about CnC 3's status as an E-sport, except it's played in the WCG, but I know it did fairly well because EA wanted it to go fairly well. Really, you're asking 2 questions though. If you mean "Is RA3 worthy of competitive play" then I say "well, anything can really." If you mean, "Will RA3 be played competitively" then I say "yeah, probably. If it's got the community and if EA puts in enough money then it can become one". A game doesn't become an E-sport based solely off it's quality, otherwise you'd see me in the WCG for Company of Heroes. No, it becomes one if it's got enough community and people are willing to throw money at it. And I strongly suspect that is what is going to happen with RA3. Which should be great fun.

GR: If you could change one thing about Red Alert 3, what would it be?

EZ: Tricky question, because you've left me at just one...Well, I can think of a few things:
1) for Balance, Flak trooper mag mines should have reduced damage, because those things carve through buildings and harvesters at a frightening rate.
2) More micro and macro demands.
3) a better support powers system, because the one they have now is crap.
and 4) A better online interface, because theirs looks 8 years old.

GR: Your clan is currently doing very well in the ClanWars competition, and you're in the top ten warriors. What do you think of your chances this month, on both ladders?

EZ: Not sure about getting the number 1 warrior slot, but I'd be happy to be in the top 3, along with Netput (who's also a very good player, and a pretty cool guy too). As for the clan, there's only one slot worth having and we're gonna fight tooth and nail for it. I'd say our chances are ok, but the current ladder system they have makes it very difficult to cement a lead at the top, and much easier to get it back. Perhaps it will be a matter of timing, but the last day ends at my 4pm so I'll be playing all that day. For once being an Australian has actually given me good timezones (most tourney's I play at around 4am, which is NOT fun!).

GR: What warrior or clan do you most fear snatching victory from you?

EZ: I don't have a clan which I've labled my personal arch-nemesis, but really it could be any of them. This is mainly if they play 2v2 games too, which are annoying because I cannot fight in a 2v2 (I'm usually the only EPIC member on most of the time) and those are worth lots of points if you win. The clanwars ladder can shift so dramatically so quickly, today's nemesis becomes tomorrow's meat-sacks. That being said, KoS are a fairly good bunch. BoP, Stim and [LA] are also frustratingly persistent.

GR: Specifically relating to the tournaments this weekend, who is the opponent that you hope you don't have to play?

EZ: Well, I don't know the dignitas tournament brackets (haven't checked it yet if it's out), but for the gr.org tourney, I'm probably worried about KoS[Unskilled], because he's beaten me before quite a few times on Clanwars. Then again, cowards do not win battles, so I'll try not to worry about any opposition

GR: What is the event you're most keen on winning?

EZ: well...let's be truthful here, probably the Dignitas. gr.org's going to have tons of tournies, but Dignitas probably less. Also, Dignitas is closer to the E-sports scene then GR.org is and making a name for myself there would mean more then making a name for myself on gr.org (I already have one anyway).

GR: What do you think your chances are of winning that tournament?

EZ: Don't know, I haven't seen the brackets for it. For all I know, I might not even be IN the freakin' thing! But I reckon my chances are ok. I'm not worried about Empire players, because of balance, and I've beaten some of the best Soviet and Allied players on Clanwars before so I've had tons of practice against them. But who knows, perhaps only noobs signed up and it'll just be one glorious stompfest. You can always hope.

GR: What faction will you play?

EZ: Soviets of course! Doesn't my picture tell you this! (note: Wait until you see it. Trust me).

GR: Thanks for your time and thoughtful answers! Good luck with the tournaments this weekend.

EZ: No problem, thanks for the support.

Feedback!!
Right now the major concern is whether the group stage matches will be bo1 or bo3. I've included a poll for the group stage matches which you can vote on.

Basically if its bo1 there will be a max of 5 matches. Pros are: it will end in 2 hours and will be logistically better to handle and also all games will be cast. Cons is it will finish too early for some people who want to watch a longer series of matches and it being bo1 might not produce the "fairest" results. but this is the format GSL uses and it seems to work great.

For the bo3 pros would be there will be more than enough for everyone to watch as the event would take 4 hours and results would be deemed more fair as its bo3. Cons are not all the games will be cast and the tournament it might spill out over a long period if there are some unexpectedly long games.

My predictions:

Group 1: yoon & ice. skill level in ZvZ is going to be a big factor
Group 2: imo the most evenly skilled group. kowi will be the fav and anything could happen with the other 3.
Group 3: redarchon to win it, anything could happen with the other 3. refallen/jesse have just started school and are semi-active and so is aaron, although i dunno what aaron has been up to. wat have u been doing aaron!
Group 4: oxygen / edge the favs tho i could certainly see roz/fah qualifying as second seed!

My prediction
Group 1: Ice and jazbas will win. 1st or 2nd depends on their match against each other. YYJ may win if he trains his TvZ hard enough as i have seen that his TvZ isnt that impressive yet... Targa is surely the underdog but u never know what wil happen in ZvZ.
Group 2: Revenent and Kowi will be 1st and 2nd respectively in this group. I haven seen iaguz play but i think he's the underdog here. I also haven seen filthy play in a while so i'll just give my votes to the 2 players i know are good.
Group 3: Aaron has been rocking up recent tournaments so i think he will get a solid 1st in this group. However, the 2nd is up in the air imo with refallen, RA and Jesse all have a chance. I'll go with RA if forced to choosse one.
Group 4: Group of death. Anything can goes in this group but i personally feel that oxygen / edge will emerge out of this imba group with their solid skills. Especially oxygen as he is unpredictable =P.

Bo1 Or Bo3: I think Bo3 may be a wiser choice as Bo1 is too punishing on making slight mistakes and BO losses.

Group2: kowi/Rev

How are so few people predicting filthy to make it out of groups??? He's seriously the favorite to win the whole thing :|

edit: my predictions:

group A:
iceiceice & yyj

I think ice is a pretty obvious choice, and whilst i dont know much about targe, i think whether yyj can take out jazbas for the last spot will depend on how able he is to adapt to the huge maps, infestor buffs and stim/bunker nerfs that all play well and truly against his favor.

group B:
kowi & filthy

Filthy is active again and has been for a while, and an active filthy for those of you who didn't play beta is pretty much the only thing to ever stand up to glade as 'Best in SEA' in solid games. Add into that the fact he's practicing with world-class talent daily as part of the crazy FXO prac schedule and i think he'll easily 2-0 or at the least 2-1 this group. Add in to that Kowi who always seems to be right at the forefront of what ill call the 'abusive metagame' (doing things like todays efficient 4gate before 4 gate was the 4gate that it is today, 3 gate voidray against terran before they nerfed it, etc etc), and I'm sure he'll qualify easily.

Group C:
Aaron and Redarchon

This group, especially if it turns out to be Bo1, could go any way at all with the amount of dairy products some of these guys like to give out... However Aaron has been pretty impressive in everything I've seen him play recently and Redarchon is also a consistently high placer in like every SEA tournament he's ever played, so those are my two picks.

Group D:
Edge & Roz

I'll preface by saying i know literally nothing about Fah... sorry Fah :<. Whilst Oxygen is generally a pretty good player, his play at the asian quals was apparently hilariously lackluster and the fact that the maps are absolutely huge for this tournament isn't going to help his race or style one bit, combine that with the fact that EdgE's ZvT is already really strong without the maps being 50 screenlengths long , It's pretty easy to chose EdgE and Roz as the guys who proceed out of this group.

People that are voting for a Bo3 have zero respect for the amount of casting that will be required. 6xBo3's takes upwards of 5 hours to complete which is very draining on a Caster. For group stage, Bo1's are sufficient.

A:
1. Ice
2. Jazbas
3. YYJ
4. Targa

B:
1. Filthy
2. Kowi
3. iaguz

C:

2. Jesse
3. Aaron
4. Refallen

And despite not following the SEA SC2 Scene at all lately, I thought I would throw in my 2c because I can.

Group 1: ice / yyj

It seems as though ice is the clear choice in this group based on previous tournament experience although I haven't seen most of these players lately. I'm not sure how much these guys will prepare, but yyj will have a much easier time preparing for Z/Z/Z than the others who will be splitting their preparations.

Group 2: filthy / revenant
Filthy is pretty much a baller. Seriously, who doesn't tip the astronaut? Not sure how Kowi has been playing lately, but I think Revenant is more motivated and will prac harder than Kowi which will lead to a win. Kowi might be saved by the fact that PvZ is possibly the most broken matchup at the moment.

Group 3: redarchon / jesse
Can't go past RedArchon in this group, and I think that Refallen's PvP will give aaron a better chance. However, unless aaron has changed his style up lately I feel it's too predictable.. It's a strong 4-gate but I think jesse will be able to pick it off with his random. Wouldn't be at all surprised if this group ends up in a tie.

Group 4: edge / roz

Always thought EdgE was one of the most underrated players from Australia especially when I feel Roz and Oxygen are given more hype due to their standings in their individual countries rather than SEA Overall. It's not to say these players are better/worse but I think they are more known while EdgE gets overshadowed by people like Moonglade. As far as I know, lately Roz has been playing Korea while I actually thought Oxygen quit SC2 (guess I was wrong) and I know nothing about Fah.

Tourney Winner: filthy
I'm going to go out on a limb and say filthy takes the tournament... I'm going to look mega dumb if he doesn't go past group. Smart player who understands the games he plays, innovates pretty well (will help in the longer series) and micros like a beast.

Dox. Koreans have nothing to do but play the game and they get paid for it - you can't expect anywhere near the same flexibility for people who often have a job + uni on top of their gaming. Especially on SEA.

Fatigue is a factor yes (though I don't agree that having a nap makes any different, it can actually make you more tired), but seeing it is on weekdays there's not much choice. If this were on a weekend I am sure it would be something like midday or early afternoon Singapore time.

Dox is right though, Bo3 is the way to go. You're already losing some legitimacy tot he tournament without GLaDe. It would look really bad if the next 2-3 favourite seeds were knocked out by Bo1 shenanigans to some retarded player. You can't compare this with OSL/MSL because Korea has a lot more depth than SEA and BW is a much more refined game with less chance for big upsets. Similarly with DreamHack etc it's a field where like every player would have a reasonable chance of winning and not many people would be surprised. Here, however, it would be quite an upset if anyone outside of 2-3 guys won it.

PREDICTIONS

My predictions are quite similar to Yoz really.

Group 1: YoonYJ + iceiceice

I have some doubts about ice as I know his practice has not been up to scratch lately with work and army commitments. In contrast Yoon has been practicing for the big Sydney LAN and should be in top form. I would not be surprised if JazBas makes an appearance at the top of the group, especially with ZvZ.

Group 2: FXOFilthy + inF
I think Filthy is a class above everyone in this group, and has been practicing quite hard. Kowi played poorly in the GSL World Championship qualifiers with some dubious decisionmaking and macro so I think Revenant could edge him out here.

Group 3: NeoRedArchon + aLtAaron
Despite RA getting his arse handed to him by SEn, he is still top dog in this group alongside Aaron. I could see Jesse taking one of the qualifier spots off one of these two though with some well executed "strategic risk assessment" tactics.

Group 4: TAEdgE + Fah

Fah was really impressive in the Code A events and I can't go past him here, especially in what is essentially a group custom made to send EdgE straight to the finals. Having said that, I can see OxygeN or Roz cheesing their way in. I'd be very surprised if anything else happened.

Hard to go past Yoz's pick of Filthy to take this tournament out, especially in the reduced latency of the SEA server from his home in Western Australia - so close to Singapore. His NA and Korea practice as well as great connections to mOOnGLaDe and friends for practice means he is one of the favourites for this whole event. Other favourites include RedArchon, Aaron, EdgE and YoonYJ. Also ice if he has been practicing enough. If someone not in that list wins I'd be very, very surprised or there was a lot of cheese.

Hmm, not looking forward to my group at all. I haven't played these people in ages but the smart money is they are all ******* good players (especially Filthy. I remember that guy back in the day. ****, he was so good) and I don't stand too much of a chance against them. Ah well, gotta try, right?

Better start practicing my Bit by Bit style. Or at least 'winning' the Code A playoffs so I can get some cash outta all this.

Updated OP with player profiles of Code A winners.

The format for group stage has been changed to bo3 and will stretch over 2 weeks instead of 1. Final details/schedule will be worked out over the weekend and will be released on Sunday.

yyj

Group B:
Kowi
Revenant

Group C:
RedArchon
Aaron

Group D:

Roz
- Unless Oxygen stops playing DOTA and practises, I don't see him winning these 2 ladder fiends.
If he does practise, I see Roz and Oxygen proceeding. Because Zerg is heartbreak race.

A iceiceice Light KinGJesse EdgE
B YoonYJ Filthy RedArchon OxygeN
C JazBas Revenant Aaron Roz
D TargA iaguz Refallen FaH

Note:
  • Kowi has been uncontactable for the past week and has been replaced by nGenLight
  • The timings were made according to the players availablity so the groups are not played in order. i.e Group 4 goes first.
  • Also if there are 3 players in SEA it starts at 7pm SGT /10pm Sydney and if there are 3 ANZ players it starts at 5pm SGT / 8pm Sydney - This is because some SEA players have a problem with making it at 5pm SGT.
  • The monday/tues matches coincide with the GSL korea vs foreigner finals but i dont see a solution for that but this will be a good gauge/test to know many viewers we will lose if we clash with gsl timings.
Matches Explained
+ Show +

Match 1: Player A vs Player B
Match 2: Player C vs Player D
Match 3: Winner of 1 vs Winner of 2 -> winner of this match advances Ro8 as #1 seed
Match 4: Loser of 1 vs Loser of 2 -> loser of this match is #4 seed and loses code S status instantly.
Match 5: Loser of 3 vs Winner of 4 -> winner of this match advances to Ro8 as #2 seed
Match 6: Loser of 5 vs Code A finals runner up -> Up/down match, winner gets code S next season.

i.e Match 1 for group 1 = ice vs yoon on GSL Crevasse
Code A Finals Runner Ups

Bracket A Runner Up: PiG
Bracket A can be viewed here

Bracket B Runner Up: enderr
Bracket B can be viewed here

Bracket C Runner Up: fight
Bracket C can be viewed here

Bracket D Runner Up: shuffle
Bracket D can be viewed here

Map Rules
+ [Map Rules] +
  • First Map for each match is as follows:

    Match 1 & Match 2 = GSL Crevasse
    Match 3 & Match 4 = GSL Tal'Darim Altar
Match 5 = GSL Terminus Re
Match 6 = Xel Naga Caverns
  • Map pool will be TSL maps with 1 veto each per player.
  • Winner vetoes first followed by loser's veto who then also picks map.
  • Crossfire is no longer in the map pool.

We will be following the example set by TSL by using this extremely balanced map pool. Hopefully more competitions follow suit as well and this becomes the standard
