One prevention SCOUT FOOL!! SCOUT CONSTANTLY SCOUT
Scout doesn't mean you can buy mech built. I've met mech built once on ladder consist of thor with 250mm (scv repairing), banshee, raven (to kill off obs for banshee detection plus pdd to stop stalker's fire). Even my heavy immortal built plus chargelots/stalkers still can't win. When i checked my replay i was even at least 30 foods infront of him.
It's a bit hard to theory-craft about how you could have "countered" as that list makes it sound like it was a fairly long game; so maybe post up the replay so that the community can take a look at it and tell you what you could have done to avoid having to deal with that composition altogether.
I've been playing a lot with thor banshe raven and marine-eral dump. Enjoying it quite a lot Snipe the observer with the insane thor range and the raven and let your banshees do the rest. Banshees are good against stalkers and a few PDD's works wonders.
Banshees melt to a few well placed storms and can be feedbacked. Banshees naturally clump up so getting off the storms isnt that hard.
uh... gate units... stalkers beat the banshees and zealots beat the thors.
The only "risk" I see to that build is if he threw in a raven for PDD, cloaked his banshees and used the vikings to snipe the obs.
Ah yes the only "risk", lets go Zealot/Stalker and not stay prepared!
You want HT's for the Banshees, while having a way to kill the Thors (Immortal/Carrier), with the obvious inclusion of Zealot, Stalker, etc to support. You also need to have a few obs placed around near your army, to call them over as he snipes them.
Immortals and charge-a-lots can't hit air leaving stalkers as your only AA unit. Stalkers aren't very good against banshees as they are light. I really don't think that Protoss can afford to do it's normal gateway/robo death ball against this style of play.
As a Terran who uses a build similar to this quite regularly in this match up, the unit composition that causes me the most grief is voidrays, blink stalkers and high templars.
Blink stalkers are good at catching harassing banshees out of position and are quite a good harassment unit themselves. Blinking into a base to take out a tech lab or a refinery and then blinking out again delays this style of play quite considerably.
Void rays will tear through the thors armour and banshees can't hit them, the only thing that causes them real trouble is marines.
High templar deal with the marines that would be causing your void rays trouble and are the only unit that can still deal damage to those banshees while cloaked. Because of their tendency to clump up so tight a well placed storm can do some serious damage to a group of banshees.
I'm not saying that your composition should be only these, or have all three of these, but when playing this style I really only have difficulty when the Protoss has at least one of these. Most people I play with this build see the 2 thors and the raven I make before starting banshee production and immediately start pumping out immortals. I believe Synystr said that's why he incorporated the thors into the build in the first place. I mean, you could just use the marines and the raven to deny scouting till you get your banshee numbers up, but tricking your opponent into making immortals is definitely worth it and makes life so much easier during the push.
On a side note: I don't think trying to snipe ravens is worth it in this scenario as by the time a terran can push out with enough banshees + a raven + at least 2 thors they are going to be on at least 2 bases if not three, and if they remembered they should have at least enough energy to scan once in case their raven gets taken out.
If you really want to delve into the in's and outs of this build there is plenty of discussion about it on TL.
As Skybreaker said, you need to post replays if you want help. Just asking for a counter like that is easy for anyone to answer. We could just say get mass carriers and own everything in the terran arsenal. But saying that wouldn't help you at all, we need the replays (:
