Ok so I'm not good at writing things out in great length, unless its a creative piece but I will give it a go.
When I heard about WCS my first thoughts were cool, I wonder who will win. Then Au/Oceania was announced and I just thought i would spend a weekend in front of my monitor supporting my favourite aussies. Then Tastosis/HD/Painuser were announced to cast the event.
This got me really excited, some badass aussie starcraft players as well as some amazing casters all in one place at the same time. As you can tell I was very excited. This was until I read that the venue was 18+. Back to my plan of spending a weekend in front of the computer monitor.
Then TekMezjE talked to the venue and gave great news, under 18s could enter with just the wrist band. This got me super excited, and as WCS was close to my birthday I know knew what i wanted for it. I first off asked my parents (my source of income as I'm stuck in a boarding school), they said yes. I was rather shocked because I thought it would of been a flat out 'No you cannot travel to sydney by yourself to watch video games.' (my parents aren't very happy about me playing video games.)
So i went back to the super excited stage, went and found flight costs, accommodation etc. Luckily for me accommodation was sorted by an amazing guy (Intoccabile19), i also had the option of staying with my uncle who lived nearby but thought it would be cooler meeting sc2sea people, putting names to faces, and also then i wouldnt get lost on the way as i would be with other people going to the same place.
Anyway, once accommodation was sorted and i had money in my bank for everything i went and booked my flights over from the little hole of an island called tassie (no im not Tasmanian, and dont hate on me if you like it, i dont ).
The last thing i had to do was get ticked to the venue (although at this time people thought there was standing room, i knew i did not want to stand around all day, not my strong suite). Luckily for me this was during exam week and i didnt have an exam that morning. The night before I set my alarm with plenty of time so I could haul my lazy ass out of bed making sure I wouldn't miss the tickets going on sale (glad i did).
The next morning I got up and jumped straight on the computer, watched a few streams and waited for ticket sales to begin. As soon as they were released I jumped on and grabbed one for me to each day. I was set, I had accommodation, flights, money for food and transport in city but most importantly I had the venue tickets. I then started studying for my afternoon exam (I was on a high all day due to having everything good to go, I also aced the exam and had thirty minutes left at the end).
The weekend before was the school ball (Saturday night), had a great night, a little side tracking but still. So I had had a great couple of weeks, four exams done ezpz a folio finished with two weeks to refine it and I was going to WCS in a week. Then later that Sunday everything went pear-shaped. First of all my mother (who I was not on particularly good talking terms) with called me and said I could only go to Sydney if she came too. I was like sure, but my accommodation is sorted to you can stay with my uncle, she said ok to this. An hour later she called and said that I can only go if I stay at my uncles as well (so much for spending a weekend chatting about StarCraft with some awesome people from sc2sea). So I was now a week from leaving and had everything sorted. A few hours later at around 9pm I get another phone call, my heart skips a beat. My first though was ‘what the hell does she want now?’ I stared at the phone for what seemed like eternity, but it kept on ringing. I answered it.
‘Robert (for those who don’t know that’s my name) I am sorry to say that your father and I have decided that you may no longer go to Sydney.’ (Her exact words) as soon as I heard this I dropped my phone, grabbed the closest thing to me (surprisingly my old phone which had died in similar circumstances) and threw it as hard as I could against the wall. Needless to say it shattered into a lot of pieces.
So in the space of an afternoon my hope of going to Sydney and spending a weekend talking and watching StarCraft with fellow gamers was cut short. One week away! I was so pissed. (My mother still gave me the full amount I was meant to get for my birthday on my birthday.) But it just wasn’t the same. With my birthday the weekend after WCS I couldn’t just go buy new flight tickets. I was mega bummed for the next few weeks.
So back to spending the weekend in front of the monitor, this annoyed the hell out of me, knowing I could have been there, watching it live. I ended up spending most of the Saturday in town with my girlfriend only getting back to boarding school late enough to watch the last few games of WCS Aus.
The Sunday however was a different story. I got up, turned my computer, loaded up the stream and spent the next hour and a bit watching one of the most amazing TvZs I have seen (mOOnGLaDe vs Tilea). For those who haven’t seen it, I highly recommend going and watching the game on entombed valley, that shit was insane.
Also following this I heard all about it from people that went there (guys in ToR, blogs on sc2sea etc.)
Anyway that’s my WCS Au/Oceania experience, thought I would share and see if I could get a beta key, because that would be ******* awesome.
