HoTS Widow Mine Units

I was wondering whether the Widow Mine can attach to a friendly unit, because if it can, wont the Terran players attach it to their own units such as the Thor (because it wont die from 1 Widow Mine) send it to the enemy base, and once it exp-lode it deal massive area damage to enemy units and building which is kind of unfair.

Making the widow mine something like a Baneling (only more powerful) for Kamikaze attack

Currently there's no way to attach it to friendly units. They're still tossing up whether or not they will deal friendly fire, allowing your opponent to position targeted units within your army (ie. like Seeker Missiles)

As a Zerg player I hope they do deal friendly damage making the Widow Mine a double edge sword unit.

i really hope it does friendly fire, so that terrans aren't tempted to just use widow mines for everything.

oracle harassment? -> widow mines
warp prism? -> widow mines
dts and no detection? -> widow mines
stop protoss from scouting with obs? -> widow mines
etc. etc.

should make banelings and fungal do friendly fire too if everything terran has to... :P

and also widow mines should not be able to kill workers like in starcraft 1 how vulture mines couldn't kill workers
That would make a really nice touch and balance to this unit

I am fairly certain mines would kill workers. I used to drag mines from nearby into the scvs with zeals and dts.

Yeah, they kill workers with the explosions, but they never activate to attack a worker

They don't activate to attack workers unless you have a unit e.g zealot near your workers

How large is the AoE? It doesn't look massively large, my question is how do you build an army faster than a detector when these are on the field?

I would imagine the benefit of sending out a big unit like a thor with a widow mine attached to it and losing the thor + mine wouldnt be greater than doing damage with the mine attached, but I could be wrong depending on how powerful the mine is. And yes you will lose the thor if it has to get close enough so the mine explodes on units.
And for that matter, i dont think that strat would work anyway, as they'll simply kill the unit with some form of ranged attack then run away if the mine drops from them? Not any different to any ranged unit kiting a baneling imo

*edit* and hell yes it should deal friendly fire damage. Its an explosion, you can't decide your own units will be missed by the explosion. The reason banelings and fungal don't do friendly fire is because its an acid thats unique to that zerg colony which doesnt affect themselves, similar to how your own spit/blood wont affect/infect you, but could be harmful to others.

I was just responding to what sounded like zerg saying splash damage without friendly fire would be silly...

I agree this should do friendly fire... the only thing i disliked from watching the videos i've seen is that it fails to fill the role of the spider mine in terms of "better not just bumrush my tank line yo cause there could be mines there" as 10s is plenty long enough for lings/chargelots to get right into your army and whatnot. Cool for just trying to shutdown that second attack pathway/protect from runbys (assuming it won't kill your workers) though.

dont forget, they arent trying to make sc2 like BW, this mine will serve its own purpose in the game, irrespective of what might have been in BW. Also, keep in mind, its still in beta, so whilst it might be 10 seconds now, they will obviously change that to balance it, depending on what they feel it needs, IF it gets implemented into the game at all. Theres really no point to these threads and theory crafting what might be, as most of these units will look nothing like they do now when the game actually gets released.
*fs dronesinjail* read the part "because its an acid thats unique to that zerg colony which doesnt affect themselves". EACH ZERG COLONY. Different colonies have different acids that hurt other colonies

Does depend what the final value for splash damage is. Seeker missile splash is relatively small compared to the direct hit.
Personally, I'm all for friendly fire. However, without knowing final values and seeing it used in gameplay, it's difficult to assert your opinion one way or another.

I think we should wait to PLAY with the unit... We can theorycraft but it really depends on the feel of the unit.

All we need to do is look back at BW. The game was out for years and people were still coming out with new strategies and situations to use old units. It's impossible to say a unit is useless because you don't know what people are working on.

cant wait to see them change/take out all the new units in the beta (sarcasm). i dunno why there isn't a beta yet, it would make balancing so much quicker and right now they are just wasting their own time fiddling with the units.

Supply I believed 2? and 75/25 to create one and for Damage lets say... It can take away half the HP of the new Tempest that takes 400/300 to create or 1 Warhound at once.

New Question guys would you prefer the Widow Mine or The Shredder? I think Widow Mine =.= just friendly fire please, and I am thinking if the widow mine got attached to a worker and the player is a Newbie/Noob he goes back to gathering resources and blow up along with all the other workers, I would feel bad for him.

The shredder was taken out because it was waaaaayyy too imba. I like the widow mine a lot I think most of the changes in HotS are going the make games way more fun and entertaining to spectate as well.
