Esports in Australia and Brisbane

With the increase of popularity of starcraft II and Esports in general. We see new events arising in hte community such as barcrafts.
what makes a barcraft?
What does it take for one to be succussfull.
Are there Any barcrafts in Brisbane Or jsut anywhere that welcomes people to watch the GSL or other tournaments?
I would like to add onto this what makes starcraft so succesfull in the US and when can we start to see this progress of Esports in Australia?

Sydney Barcraft GSTL Finals a couple months back was actually one of the first major Barcrafts (in the world) APL have since held another to much success (both had 300+ people) I believe Mana Bar in QLD (not sure whether Mana bar is in GC or Brissie) held a barcraft for SEA/ANZ Battle.net Invitationals and it was a bit of a flop

What makes them successful is the way in which it is promoted, if no one knows about it no one can attend, having a venue that is easy to get and in a central location are also ticks in my book

Im sure the guys from APL will be able to give you some tips

Population... US has 10 times (or more) the population than Australia. Plus because of the active nature of Australian culture, there is a lower propensity to be an avid gamer...

Also, because there aren't as many viewers, there isn't even a tenth of the advertising dollar and sponsorship involved to develop these events. This all takes time..

Barcrafts, I think they do some at Mana Bar?.. I think..idk

venom, I think we had one a while ago at the Mana Bar, however not sure how successful it was (I didnt even know about it)

However, there are probably plenty of people who are keen. Ingame, a few of us hang out in the channel 'Briscraft' and all are welcome (we haven't really gone around advertising, maybe we should)

But hey, maybe ACL Gold Coast is a good time to chat to some people from around Brisbane, I know we have the numbers to get a decent barcraft happening!

Mana bar is in Fortitude Valley (inner city area of Brisbane), I didn't end up going to that one actually (too poor) but the place is really tiny, I don't think it would be an ideal venue for a barcraft with its layout. That said, it's a 'gaming' bar so I guess that's why they decided to host it there.

I agree with this, and doesn't really have the 'bar' feel to it.

I think you need a place to sit back and watch the games, just like if you went to a sports bar (this is eSports after all).

I don't mind putting some effort into looking for a place to get one happening for either the Code S finals, or some other future event if there's enough interest

The Mana Bar is strictly 18+ as well; more people can come if you only have to be 18 to go to the bar itself, as in, get drinks, you know what I mean.

Anything in Brisbane would be great.

The issue I can foresee is that because the Mana Bar is inherently a gaming bar, the management would be inclined to facilitate for a barcraft.
With other bars, however, I can imagine some logistical issues with drumming up the support from management.

I think the trick would be to hunt around for a suitable venue that tends to be a little quiet around the time of the event. Surely someone would be interested in trying it out if it means getting some business they wouldn't usually get.

Bjorn, it's definitely a challenge, but by no means impossible. The fox is one that comes to mind, they've hosted a weekly board game league before. Only thing is they don't have a suitable viewing area with decent TV (as far as I remember anyway), otherwise I would have made the call already

No club owner in Brisbane city/Fortitude Valley would agree to having a Barcraft... Manabar is the only one that would go for it because they are a gaming bar..

I don't see having a small venue as an issue, as Brisbane has A) Tiny population B) very few gamers C) Very few bars.

SUP SONS, I'm J-HILLY FROM BRISBANE YO (okay I felt that was a necessary introduction to an otherwise and boring and informative post).

There is a huge scene in Brisbane for sc2. We have some of the best players in the country going to events whenever they are on!

Barcraft was hosted at the Manabar a few months ago for the SEA/ANZ invitational finals.. However the venue is very small for a 'barcraft' (imo), yet the gesture was nice and if there was a bigger venue I definitely think the turnout would be huge (also maybe going to a place where basics weren't 8 dollars could help too).

I work at a bar at the moment, and I could (should) pitch the idea to my boss, but I'm not sure he would see the worth (considering we currently don't have the internet at the pub and the cost of setting up such a service would be big).. I don't know, it's worth a shot though.

ACL is holding it's national finals down the GC next week, which is pretty sick and I know there will be a huge turn out for that. If you want to know about venues for brisbane tournaments.. usually they're always held at Elysium (it's easy for everyone to get to).. and the room is always packed for the day.

Completely wrong sorry solis. This is just one of many national events in 2012. The finals will be toward the end of the year.

Back onto the Barcraft topic, there are plenty of pubs that would openly accept Barcraft, although I do agree a weekday would suit them more in most instances.

Well I already mentioned one that would - the Fox. I would bet there are others. The only challenge would be major events on Saturdays and Sundays. Makes GSL finals tough, but MLG and Dreamhack finals could line up nice if people are keen for a pub lunch/liquid breakfast.

Anyway, as I said I am happy to arrange something, so don't worry about naysaying, just leave it to me
