Found an interesting review of a new in-dev "MMOIRL" (dunno if that's a real term but I am claiming it) game - "Ingress"

Taken from this early review:

Ingress is an augmented reality game, which essentially overlays the real world with additional information through a digital device (such as your smartphone, tablet, or perhaps in the near future, digital glasses).

In Ingress, players pick one of two sides or “factions” (Enlightenment or Resistance) and visit real public places to capture “portals” (often key landmarks, public sculptures or art).

By capturing these places displayed on their smartphones players can link portals together to create “fields” and gain control of territory for their faction.

It is a power struggle to take possession of territory and either harness the portals for the betterment of mankind or protect mankind from the dangerous energies they emit (depending on which faction you belong to).

The following is a map of the fields currently established in Melbourne:

Early invites went out at the start of November, and you can go to the official site to opt in to try get a code. This looks like fun! I've put in an opt-in so hopefully I'll be able to snag it soon and I can do my own little look at it OR PERHAPS DOMINATE THE CITY.

Fun fact: I was reading a thread on the android Subreddit that this is an extremely smart way for Google to get users to freely mine mass amounts of data for them to then apply to things like Google Maps - - or whatever they are creating to compete with Nokia's new walking guidance app.

I wish I saved the comment, it was super freaking interesting. They have been doing things like this for years apparently.

Yeah it's definitely going to be massive for things like marketing and consumer data kinda things like that - I'm going to read the t+c just to double check a couple of things before I get started.

Yea was just about to say that. This is quite obviously googles way to easily map out by-foot paths that wouldn't normally get tracked through google maps. They are also using it to pick up stray SSIDs and are planning to get 'players' to take photos of landmarks during the 'game' as well.
