Hey guys was wondering if you all had any tips to share when it comes to building placement as Zerg. I didn't find this to be a prob until I got out of Silver, where some clever terrains bunch their marines between my hatchery and spawning pool do I can't get a surround.
Now I've learned to spread my buildings out against Terran and 'wall off' my mineral line against Zerg to slow his forces trying to stream in at my workers.
Basic things placing evolution chambers and macro-hatches to prevent hellions from getting giant run-bye into your mineral lines and not placing important tech structures in easily snipe-able positions. Other than that, you generally want to maximise mobility for your force so that you aren't fighting in chokes.

Vaguely related tip: don't waste too much time on building placement just make sure you don't clump them together as was the problem stated in the OP. Just box a handful of workers in your mineral line and build as quickly as possible! Any time spent planning a wall is time not macroing :P
The reason you used to see players ( and still do) make pools behind their min line is to be better off against reapers. Honestly apart from just making macro hatches to wall off your natural and evo chambers to do the same there isnt that much to add. I guess drones can walk through spines so if you make them to defend drops put the IN your mineral line.
Oh actually something ive done on a few maps is if your going double evo in zvz, put it on either side of ur ramp (the first one goes whered u normally put it to wall off) then u can put a queen in the middle vs a zergling runby and its incredibly effective.
Sim city wall off at your natural to prevent hellion runbys, ice always does this excellently.
Don't sim city in your main as marines will just drop in those sweet spots, unless you're meta gaming and hide borrowed banelings there. Something ice does too lol.
in ZvZ, if your creep spread is covering the ramp at your natural, you can save yourself from massive ling/baneling all-ins that you would be unprepared for by walling off the ramp with evos, with a queen blocking the exit path. This generally gives you time to morph blings/make some roaches to defend the obnoxious all-in
I like placing two spines and two evo's next to each other to deny hellion access. Queens at ramp, once Hellions are in your main then your shit is fucked.

1) Place your buildings behind the mineral line vs Terran so none of your lings can hit marines he drops there but put 1-2 burrowed banelings in the space instead
2) Wait till said unsuspecting Terran comes along with pesky drop "Silly Zerg can't place his buildings properly huehuehue"
3) Profit! > BwaHahahHAha!!!
edit: looks like shaft beat me to it

Back before the queen buff I used to always simcity my natural using an evo chamber at the bottom of the ramp and a spine next to it, but these days hellion openers are less popular so I don't do it anymore.
