MC Internet is hosting a trans-Tasman SC II competition between its internet cafes in Melbourne, Auckland, Perth, and Hamilton on Sunday, 17 April 2011.

Competition details are:

Start Time: Melb - 10AM | NZ - 12PM

Entry: $10 per person

Prize:

First place - $300 Cash + Choice of Ttesport Black Mouse/ Shock Headphone/ or Challenger Keyboard
Second place - $150 membership credit + Choice of remaining two Ttesport items above
Third place - $50 membership credit + Remaining Ttesport item
Registration closes: Midnight Sunday, April 10

Format: Group stage -> Single Elimination BO5

No player limit set.

IMO the entry fee per prizes awarded is a bit low, when you compare it to the NRG lan in sydney they have a 25k prize pool for a $15 entry fee.

Currently if you have 64 people spread across all your locations you more than cover the costs of the tourney.

I'd say that you could reasonably expect 30-64 at each location if you upped the prize pool substantially (which would still keep you guys in the green)

Upping the prize pool would bring a lot more attention to this tourney, you'd have more competitors (more potential to make your money back) and you'd also draw the attention of gaming websites which in turn creates even more attention on the tourney. There is a ton of potential for a lot of positive PR with this event.

Feel free to PM me if you want me to expand on my thoughts anymore, have quite extensive experience with net cafes and events and even a little experience with tournaments.

My mistake - I was under the false impression that Perth is just 2 hours behind Melb. Tourny pushed back till 8AM Perth time.

Our focus on this event is to get some experience in running a SCII comp and also provide social event between our cafes for the local SCII players. If prize money is too low, we apologize.

If support for SCII competitions locally is strong, for sure we will make it bigger in our subsequent competitions.

Actually Melbourne daylights savings shall end in a couple of weeks i think, before this tournament, so might be 2 hours the difference then. Apologies.

Still, 8am pretty early for those in Perth.

The alternative is to push it back 1-2 hours, but that means the NZers will be playing till late in the evening, which is also not a good thing.

Well they were just suggestions, maybe if you guys are hoping for a strong turn out drop the entry fee to like $5 or something, just another suggestion since from the people I have spoken to $10 is either too much for such a little prize and/or too much to just play in a fun tournament when there are so many free ones around each week.

Personally I'll probably be playing even if it stays at $10 and I'm sure a lot of others will too.

Such a large entry fee compared to the prize pool kind of argues against that you guys are just trying to gain experience and provide a social event.

Again I'm not trying to be a dick about this, just voicing my opinion on how this could be perceived.

The competition in Melb will be held in the second store on A'Beckett Street.
