Sorry for the obscure title, I don't know how to word it better. Basically I want to know, at Bronze/Silver level of play, is it better to plan a specific build order for each match-up you could be in (so say I was Terran, I'd make a TvT, a TvP and a TvZ opener each), or, would it be better to try and design a single build order to tackle every match up thrown at it.
The advantage of the former is obvious, you would be able to be more specialised, less likely to produce meaningless units, etc. That's good enough in it's own right, but the latter has the upside of being used consistently, so it would be practiced more, and possibly end up being more "polished" than each of the multiple openers. It could also throw off your opponent, who might be expecting the "standard" XvX opener.
Obviously this doesn't carry into mid- and late-game strategy and army composition, as that would always be defined by scouting, countering, tech, etc.
So to summarise: a single, well-practiced, take-on-all-comers opener, or specific, specialised and maybe slightly underpracticed build orders?
I would say single (cheese proof !! lol) build.. for example when i first got sc2 i just worked out how to get marines and medivac ASAP to drop my opponents mineral line and got to platinum soley from that one build.
See, have 3 different builds for each matchup... that is not going to get you directly up to a higher league, I think its more your basic mechanics you want to look at improving.
As you improve and climb the ranks you will find certain matchups you struggle with and then you can look at each matchup specifically... I highly recommend obviously day9 but for a more quick easy look at some specific builds http://www.youtube.com/user/ForceSC2strategy is really good helped me alot when i started out.
but even thats for abit later i think... bronze and silver league is just about getting your mechanics and macro down and you should be out of there in no time ! (eg marine marauder only every game but focus on doing that while keeping up on depots, scvs, expanding etc and i think that alone would get you up tbh!)
whilst a build order will help, getting the basics of unit production ie scv's/army composition/scouting/reacting/timings to have things done, ie not sitting still constantly doing something, would be the biggest things to learn being in bronze. i am not to sure about terran builds as such have a look at replays and see what most people do against certain races. Take in mind this could also be map dependant to.
Also be open to play people in bronze to i notice you just have silver and gold only, you can still learn from people in bronze just by practicing, it may be a bit easier to get all of the things above when you are not pressured so much.
I watched some old replays i had saved and took note of the timings
I just recently bashed out of bronze myself, and the best advice I can give you will echo Clock.
Just focus on you Macro, scouting, Not getting supply blocked, etc. It might help to learn these things if you have a solid BO that you know backwards and forwards, like MMM or something. That way your not worrying about what to build, and you can focus entirely on everything else. (That sounds a bit paradoxical...but you get what I mean? Supply, SCV production, that sorta thing.)

Learn a solid opener for each match-up, there arent many builds that would work universally against all 3 races.
If you play protoss I'd recommend..
PvZ: 3 gate expand with gate/core 1 space wall at your ramp + early zealot hold positioned in the 1 space
- safe build with good economy
- lets you fend off early attacks easy
PvT: 3 gate robo colossi
- safe from early aggression
- quickish robo to help against terran bio ball
- can get immortals against mech if they decide to go siege or thor heavy
PvP: econ 4 gate (get gate at 12)
- standard build against protoss
- punishes robo and blink stalker builds when executed well
- low risk involved despite being all in as you can defend rushes and stop 4 gates with 4 gate.
Not sure about other races, but 1 build per matchup would be your best bet unless you play random in which case 1 build per race makes more sense.
Unless you protoss (in which case 4gate all day erry day), you should work out a matchup specific BO. It may hamper your play initially but in the long run, you'll be better for it.
