Path of Exile: Open Beta this Weekend

G'day all!

I know some of you are a bit bored of Diablo 3 by now, or are frustrated with it's lack of depth. I still enjoy the game quite a bit, though it doesn't quite have the depth or freedom I was hoping it would have.

Path of Exile is a free to play (not pay to win, think LoL style micro transactions) indie game made by a couple of ambitious Kiwis (Grinding Gear Games). It's an A-RPG like Diablo but it boasts some pretty in depth character build customization and a very interesting economic system (no gold ^_^).

Path of Exile VLOG - Open Beta

I purchased a supporter pack, which gets you a closed beta key but there is also a open beta stress test this weekend. Full open beta is said to be in august.

I have been keeping an eye on this game since about a month or two before D3 release and it just keeps getting better and better. They just added in randomized endgame dungeon maps, which you find as an item in the overworld. Pretty awesome stuff.

My fav part of it all though, is the abilities system and passive tree, which are hugely flexible and allow for some very interesting possibilities. If you have played the Final Fantasy games before then think FF7's Materia system for abilities and FF10's Sphere Grid for passives, if you get that reference you have probably started salivating by now

So I will probably be covering this in addition to Diablo 3 in the future on my YouTube channel for those interested.

Let me know if you are going to be playing - would be cool to get a bit of an SC2SEA trading group or guild going

Had a bit of a look at the classes and the differences between them today.

Class Differences in Path of Exile

The game is really flexible in the way you build your characters, kind of exciting to see.

I'm not a fan of FF10's grid system tbh. If it's free to play, I don't mind trying it out.
Got a question though, do we get to reassign skills or it's permanent after choosing?
The problem with D2 was that you could end up with a totally crappy build if you didn't do your homework, all that wasted time is quite a turn off imo (i hate levelling). It's a wonder how I got 2 level 60s in D3 when I only managed one max level toon in WoW, but I digress.

Unfortunately, none of the characters in PoE really wowed me.

watched the vids. the camera angle feels like it's wasting a lot of of space IMO. the gem thingy looks interesting though

You can undo passive skills one at a time using undo points. You get a few of these from quests and the rest from rare consumable drops. So you could easily wipe off 5-10 points but wiping more than 20 could take you some serious farming or trading. Possible, but expensive, which I like.

I should mention that the classes in PoE are kind of arbitrary because you build whatever class you want. Want a templar that uses bows with elemental attributes? Go ahead.

This seems to come up from a few people. Though I don't personally have an issue with the perspective (feels intimate and atmospheric not being able to see very far) I can understand why some people don't like it. Devs said it's by design and that they are considering adding an option in to zoom out a bit more but I don't know if it's a priority.

Just played my first serious co-op section with Amy, was pretty fun! The mobs scaled quite well and it was pretty fun trying to synergize out builds. We ended up smashing the first part of act 1 with a pretty nice Elemantal Templar + Poison/DPS Hunter.

I also made this explantation of levelling a little earlier, I might make a video on co-op scaling scaling tonight.

I could try to get it set up, the guy is pretty friendly. Feel free to send me questions and if I can come up with a decently interesting list then I might go for it. No promises atm though

I've been playing the open beta today, I must say its got some good ideas, it still has a lot of rough edges but its only in open beta but the game has a lot of potential
