This is my biased opinion of the who the top 10 zergs right now are. This was a difficult list to compile considering that maybe 19 of the top 20 players right now are Zerg () but hopefully this is a little bit of fun and we get to see who the most baller zergs are right now.
#10: Symbol
I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of symbol. It takes a while for me to become a fan of a player, especially when I rarely get to watch their games. But results speak for themselves. This guy is a beast, all killed IM, made ro8 last season and then ro16 this season. If he hadn't had the misfortune of getting the toughest ro16 group (toughest group is all zergs naturally ) he would've likely topped a number of the other groups. Unfortunately, in my opinion he doesn't quite stack up with the other zergs here but perhaps that's just because he had to play life and leenock and didn't really have much of a chance. If you want to see some cool unorthodox styles (occasional 14/14 zvp, makes ultras sometimes in zvp, makes some roaches in zvt) then symbol is your man. He's not quite as on fire as he was a few months ago but this half of the tsl duo isn't going anywhere soon.
#9: Scarlett
Scarlett is amazing. She is a ridiculously good player who unfortunately hasn't made that big result in a tournament yet. We all know she has it in her to be making those violet-esque runs at ipl 5 but it just hasn't worked out that way. That's why she's here, potentially the scariest bog standard zvt I've seen. She consistently goes up against the best terrans in the world and doesn't disappoint. Her zvp is solid but I'd say it might be her weakest matchup showing weakness against parting and creator in BWC. Her zvz on the other hand though is monstrous, leenock said (to drg?) that you can't beat her in a macro muta game (something along those lines) and it is pretty true. Take her loss to leenock in RSL, two wins in longer games then 3 losses to leenock's superior early game. Then her series against drg in ipl 5, wins the macro game but loses the two early game scenarios. If you want to learn how to play one style in zvt or a macro style in zvz scarlett should be your go to almost every time.
#8: Soulkey
This guy man, I'm not a big fan of any of the BW players who weren't big when I followed BW. So players like effort and jaedong are awesome for me but a guy like Soulkey who came up after I stopped following BW doesn't quite do it for me. But, like symbol, results have to be considered more over who I like. Basically, Soulkey made ro8 in this gsl taking out Life 4:0 in games to get there. That's no small feat considering Life's record in zvz but I can't help but feel that he was outclassed by the other players in the ro8. Leenock took him out easily in ro16 and innovation delivered the 2nd blow in the ro8 to knock him out. Until I see more of him he's just another good zerg for me whose games who might want to catch if you can.
#7: Stephano
Sure he underperformed at BWC, sure he didn't win eswc, sure he didn't make it that far in ipl 5. Despite that, stephano is still one of the best zergs going around. Talks of his practice schedule are brighter than ever recently and to be honest it shows. His games for the BWC and ipl 5 showed poor macro and decision making from stephano and it hurt him a lot. If this guy gets back into gear and trains up for the next tournament we can expect him to be back in title contention. Stephano is really good but, outside of his zvp, he hasn't shown the best play recently. If you want a refresher on how to play ling infestor zvp, or want to try some roach hydra, stephano is playing it well right now and worth it to watch. Outside of entertainment his zvz and zvt are outclassed by other zergs so I'd say look to other zergs for learning purposes.
#6: DongRaeGu
Ah drg, I had him in the top 5 until very recently where unfortunately an American wannabe snatched the place from him. Drg is still very good, his zvz is solid as ever, his zvt showing the same beautiful muta play we've come to expect from him and his zvp although perhaps inconsistent is still a refreshing change from standard play. After the recent patch I think drg might start to perform better on the scale of things with his lack of reliance on infestors in every matchup. Drg is a champion and he will be a champion again, it is only a matter of time. Watch him for great muta play in zvt and zvp.
#5: viOlet
This guy doesn't make sense. Just about everyone is confused, he practices in NA and shows some good play then he comes out at ipl 5 and then nasl showing spectacular games against really good players. Ninja said that he wanted to know how violet beat polt but sniper didn't and tbh I'm not rly sure why either. First he had to play innovation, I thought he had no chance but lo and behold and he wins 2-1. Then he makes the winners final, and proceed to barely lose to leenock and beat polt in the process. He's kinda like scarlett except less modern. He's going to play ultras in zvt, he's going to make more roaches with a later hive in zvp, he's going to open pool fist almost every zvz. Violet is a very good player, like scarlett if you want standard play violet is where it's at right now.
#4: HyuN
Had hyun made it deeper in ipl 5 or won gsl he'd probably be topping this list but unfortunately that isn't the case. So the king of fight club will have to settle with 4th best. So a long time ago, in a galaxy far away squirtle was the reigning champion of fight club. He had just won his 3rd consecutive week and was looking to break the record of 3 (set by sheth and hero before him) by taking out a relatively unknown hyun. Hyun came out and beat him 5-3. Then he went on to beat just about everyone you could name. Alive? Check. Grubby? Check. Gumiho? Check. Byun? Check. Life? Check. Parting? Check. He's won a whopping 14 weeks and takes on leenock today (probably gonna start just as I post this). If that's not enough for you I know what it is. He also finished 2nd in gsl this season. Yeah, I'm as excited for HyuN vs Leenock as you are.
#3: Sniper
Sniper is the real deal. If I hear anymore about sniper being bad or being a fluke I'm gonna be very disappointed. I remember at the beginning of this season, PiG after watching sniper play (in a team league iirc) said something a long the lines of this, "this guy is incredible, he's going to win a gsl in the next few seasons". However, sniper did that and more, winning the current season and looking great while doing so. He takes the edge over hyun with his win in gsl but doesn't quite overstep the next two players with his ipl 5 placing. All I can say is: if you aren't a fan of sniper, you better be now!
#2: Leenock
The difference between 1 and 2 is so tiny now there's almost no point in separating them. But leenock hasn't delivered the goods in gsl the way life has, showing difficulty in making it past the ro8 so he has take number 2. Leenock just had an incredible month. He made ro8 twice in gsl, came 2nd in mlg, and won ipl 5. Between leenock and scarlett you have my zvz, and his zvt and zvp are on an incredible level. He beat rain at mlg back when I thought no zerg could beat him, then finished 2nd barely to life. Again leenock vs hyun is gonna be excellent and I'm running out of time to write this before it starts so... Go leenock!
#1: Life
Life is mechanically the scariest player on the planet. His zvt is on another level, watching him play is like... Odd, it feels like he's never in a position here he isn't in control. He'll get into a "bad" position and then win anyway. It doesn't make sense. Sure he's shown a weakness in zvz to the top players but this guy is the best right now and even if he didn't make it past ro16 this season he's going to keep performing and keep not giving a damn. Life is close to the perfect tournament player, exceeding in both the gsl and mlg format. Watch life for the culmination of ridiculous mechanics, multitask, micro, game sense that makes him the player he is. However, please don't try and copy this guy, it's only gonna end in disaster... He's just that good.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to see any of sen's games so he can take 11th place
I think Leenock is better than Life but he just needs one more thing to do it for me. If he beats hyun in fight club he takes it. Like I said, top 2 is so very close. Scarlett is mechanically a better player then stephano but she just hasn't got the results yet so I'm hesitant about putting her higher. I think stephano has slightly more clutch play so I put him higher. I would put scarlett over soulkey but he made ro8 gsl so despite disliking him I put him there.
Snute is good but really all I've seen from him was his dreamhack run which was good but nothing special and then he got seeded highly into ipl5 and beat life 2-1. He's good for sure but I really don't think hes a top 10 zerg.
