After reading through CrAzerk's I felt like doing a similar thing of my own would help improve my play. (Note: My writing skills may be subpar haha.) And yes I"m stealing the road to GM idea =P.

Alright so I'm NXZ a 1500 point master zerg. I have been playing sc2 since January and sc1 for a few years before that. Im writing this to help improve my knowlege of the game and have the motivation to look through my replays.


Game 1 - NXZ (Z) vs urps (P)
Tal'Darim Altar



Alright so this is a zvp. Im fairly confident in the matchup thanks to aquanda and Sheth. My standard play for zvp is a speedling expand with 6-12 early lings to apply pressure and scout around the map. Considering the map is tal'darim altar I'm expecting a FFE which could be annoying because of the rocks at the third on this map which makes the really fast third I favor vs FFE somewhat troublesome.

Using those early lings to take out the destructible rocks so I can take my ideal 3rd base in this situation.



Fast third to help keep me in the economic race.

Taking the fast third is something I really really like to do. Unfortunately this sometimes leaves me open to weird timings that most protoss never do but its almost 90% safe on most maps imo. For those wondering I try and take my third as quickly as possible after toss takes his natural.

I send one ling up to the front of his base and try and run in. The cannon quickly takes it out BUT the ling confirmed my thoughts that there wasn't a full wall-off. This quickly leads to...

Do my eyes deceive me? a 6 gate... ggwp scouting info!Now that my hero lings gave their lives for this knowledge I begin my 6 gate defense (Heading straight for roach speed, burrow and +1 ranged while producing as many roaches as i can). Unfortunately a mistake that often plagues me at this part of the game is getting supply capped. Definitely something I need to work on. (Note: Protoss ends up cancelling his 6th gate and adds on a robo instead.)

Protoss moves out across the map and pokes down at the 6 o'clock base. At this point I had literally no army and 5 roaches in production, and you guessed it... I was supply capped. Fortunately for me I had taken a 7:00 min third over a 6:00 min one which while puts me a bit behind in economy allowed me to take the third close to my base. Had I taken the 6 o'clock base over the 7:30 one, my third definitively would've died, putting me really really far behind.

Its the red spy! More importantly I start my +1+1 melee and carapace while starting my bane nest with overlord drops and speed. I want to get my ideal vs p mid game comp of roach/ling/bane.



Getting +2 +2 and making lots and LOTS of banelings.



Looking to engage after chasing him across the map with my huge mass of overlords. Then I proceed to ruin the engagement by clicking r instead of d like 5 times when I attempted to carpet bomb the banelings. Woops.I escape with most of my overlords though and using zerg's ability to remax:



Hopefully I can stall for those 44 roaches to spawn.

Protoss comes down the map for the counter where reinforcing roaches along with leftover banelings clean up and the protoss ggs.


This game really showed the weakness of my zvp. I don't take enough gas geysers later into the game leaving me gas starved throughout a lot of the late game and i often fail the baneling drops. The supply capping I mentioned above would've led to me getting destroyed by the 6 gate had he committed but luckily for me he changed his mind after I scouted him, leaving me in a pretty good position
