Hi, I am Mack 'Petraeus' Smith.
Recently I won the NZ/PH Tokyo Game Show Qualifiers and am going to Tokyo in 6 days
As part of the prize, they provided $1000 USD. So far I have raised $350 NZD from Family/Barcraft NZ but I'm still short $750 NZD.
Rogue has kindly made a ChipIn page for me in the hope of raising some of the funds needed. Any donations would be much appreciated Thanks.
Well it is his job as he makes his living (afaik) off his role in the eSports world - coaching, representing sponsors, tournament winnings. For most of the Starcraft 2 population (including yourself) it is just a hobby whether you'd like to admit it not. It is not a method you are using to support yourself off (even if you'd like to do so in the future).
Like you said, your family isn't in the financial state to front the money for an $1100 trip to Japan. However you find yourself in this situation, $1100 in debt to your family who can't afford it, with no method of paying it off (afaik you don't have a job at the moment) other than to ask for donations. This is a little irresponsible on your part, especially organising travel first. Even if you thought your previous sponsors would back you, you still didn't have confirmation on what quite honestly is a lot of money for anyone in the eSports scene.
Without full knowledge of your personal life, I guess I might be treading a fine line - so I am sorry if I've upset you. I don't blame you for doing everything in your power to take this opportunity, as it will be a fantastic experience for you. Hopefully you learn a lot from this whole ordeal, and are successful over in Japan so you will be in a better position the next time you are in this situation.
If PiG 'made a living' from eSports as you put it, then he wouldn't have had to ask for donations towards his trip. I still fail to see the difference between us that gives you such clear differentiation between what is a hobby and what is a job. Up until now, I've been able to support myself fine off of eSports. PiG was able to do the same until he qualified for IEM. You do not personally get to decide who plays for a hobby and who plays for a job.
As for the rest of your points, I agree with them. It was irresponsible on my part to take such a risk with sponsorship.

Response to UHF. quoting Pet for relevance.
I find it absolutely insane that you're riding Petraeus for already having paid the money for the ticket and then asking help paying back a large amount. Essentially, what you've said through as many words is:
You would've been okay helping him if he hadn't paid for it.
To juxtapose this, it's as if telling someone asking for preventative treatment (say, a vaccine) being told "no, we'll just cure you of the disease when you get it".
It's an extreme situation, but roughly the same. Yes, he should've planned better, but to say that you're ok with PiG's because it's his livelihood and not Pet's is pretty crazy. "Pet can get a job!"
So could PiG. In fact, it would arguably be harder for Pet to get a job to work it off, as he'd be paid less (due to being a minor / less experienced). As well as having a job would hurt Pet more as he already has less time to play (due to school).

Okay, I'm sorry and I'm wrong. This is exactly what Pet should have done, and I encourage people to do the same in future.
I appologise if I've ruined your thread Pet and derailed it in anyway. Once again, good luck. This will probably be my last post on SC2SEA, I'm sorry.
You bend the kid over and ride him for 3 pages because you are so ******* offended, then when Brad and others back him up you say "This will probably be my last post on SC2SEA, I'm sorry."
Jesus christ, your point was well proved. You made him feel bad as shit, which he already did long before you posted. Asking for money is a ******* horrible thing to have to do, wait until you are perhaps put in this position before you start being a dick about it.
I am still talking to sponsors, Pet is still trying to get on a team, noone gave up and relied on the community, noone is forcing anyone to give, if people can donate it so so soooooo very much appreciated, like ALL THINGS YOU DONATE TO.
I have never been so disappointed by people in a community which is supposed to work together and grow together. I am financially fucked at the moment, if I could give Pet every cent for his trip I would, but I have no money and therefore am using spare time to do as much as I can for him to get sponsorship or money from other sources. Likewise, Fenner did not have money to donate, so he made graphics for Pets Sponsorship Proposal etc.
At the end of the day, he isn't scamming you, he does feel ******* bad about it and has now offered coaching to donors etc. Just give him a goddamn break and stop being so ******* dramatic.
Rogue although there is nothing wrong with your post, 'Just give him a goddamn break and stop being so ******* dramatic' - well, that exact post is quite dramatic :P.
