Hi, I am Mack 'Petraeus' Smith.
Recently I won the NZ/PH Tokyo Game Show Qualifiers and am going to Tokyo in 6 days
As part of the prize, they provided $1000 USD. So far I have raised $350 NZD from Family/Barcraft NZ but I'm still short $750 NZD.
Rogue has kindly made a ChipIn page for me in the hope of raising some of the funds needed. Any donations would be much appreciated Thanks.
In my opinion, by signing up & competing in the qualifier you should be accepting that you have the means to get to the next stage of the event. If that means your mum pays for it and you have to pay her back - so be it, earn the money to get your reward. However you've decided you'll sign up and accept any benefits whilst trying to lump the costs on the community (ie. dipping into both sides for yourself).
I know I sound like a dick by saying this, but needed to get it off my chest.
I'll donate some money next week on wednesday to help pet but am poor til then. This was the main reason i didn't compete after doing the sums the night before. Having said that though i hope you have fun and a good time
Yeah I understand what Stallion and UHF are saying. However when I signed up for the tournament, I thought I would be able to get funding from either a team or individual sponsors. Unfortunately that isn't working out too well for me which is the reason I am asking the community. Sorry if this seems selfish/not thought out, I didn't anticipate this outcome.
Hmmm..
I'm just going to step in and say that the attacks at Pet are pretty unfair. The kid is asking, if you want to help him out - then he would really appreciate it.
UHF, while I agree, people shouldn't sign up for qualifiers if they have no way of getting to the finals. No one said anything about this request for support. Now while it can be argued that PiG had a bigger opportunity to gain exposure at the event, the bracket for TGS is probably alot easier for Pet and he will likely be aiming for a top 3 finish.
In short, if you don't agree or don't like this - don't donate. It's very unfair that people point the finger at Pet constantly while others do the same things and get all the support they need.

the difference is PiG doesnt BM people, and his thread wasnt a week before the event, like 5-6 days before he has to leave
Maybe you should reword the original post to say that your flights have already been paid for, and we aren't paying to send you over, we are paying off your loan to your mother.
This is kind of my point - you decided to sign up and qualify, therefore should take responsibility for the costs involved, not throw it over to community and make it sound like you urgently need assistance getting over there. If you are going regardless, I feel you should work to pay off your mother, rather than expect the community to front up the money.
I know it'll sound cliche but when i was younger, $700 was a lot of money. If i wanted that kind of money I would have to work my ass off for it. I'm all for supporting the community, but there has to be a line somewhere.
I'm not having a go at you personally, I have nothing against you. I just don't like the situation and I believe you are approaching it the wrong way. Anyway, I've already stated my opinion more than I should have.
This is kind of my point - you decided to sign up and qualify, therefore should take responsibility for the costs involved. You are double dipping; taking the $1000 travel stipend and a chance at winning $3000, and expecting the community to pay for your tickets after already buying them. If you are going regardless, I feel you should work to pay off your mother, rather than expect the community to front up the money.

? You just repeated what you said above. I already replied to this...
At the time Petraeus signed up he thought he would be getting help from his team at the time.
After that was no longer and option I personally took steps towards outside sponsorship to help fund his trip as he has just had to buy a brand new computer and his parents werent too happy about it.
I have tried my best to organise money from other sources, but suggested to Pet considering a week from the event he thought he didn't have money and was starting to freak out about it, that instead of it impeding on his practice to try appeal to the community as anything at this point would help him as I continue to seek external support.
I know how most of you feel about it, and I feel the same way. However, if someone HAS tried other ways to get support and this is their only option they shouldnt be punished for it. Having to beg for money is relatively demeaning, especially when people already have some pretty bad opinions of you.
Thank you to those who have donated, it does mean a lot to Pet and he is very thankful. I am still continuing to try and get the funding from other means also!
so you're asking for money to help pay your mum back? o.O
It doesn't actually matter who I'm paying. the fact is that I'm paying for the trip to Tokyo... It was essentially a loan so the donations are helping ME pay for MY trip.
I don't really get the point of this, It's not like if we donate or don't donate you're still going. If it was really urgent to pay your mum back did you really think it was possible to raise a total of $700 in a short amount of time by these donations?
"Hey man I understand if you are feeling hurt that you didn't get to go to Tokyo or something but no need to take it out on me Thanks."
PMed by Petraeus after I replied "why bother" on this thread
maybe if you were a respectable member of the SEA scene like PiG and didn't start so much drama you would be able to earn $700 from these donations.
