This is a thankyou and hopefully amusing blog about an awesome smurf I had the pleasure to come across on SEA ladder last night. I won't name him as obviously anonymity is important to smurfs! The really cool bit is at the end - the intro / first game is how we got there.
Brief background about me - Gold level Terran, been playing 3 months and trialling with ToR (which is awesome). Last played competitive RTS about 16 years ago which was C&C1 but gave up as computer was too heavy to carry to mate's houses!
Been up and down this season - super fast promotions from Bronze and Silver then struggled at mid/high Gold, especially v good Zerg and Protoss players. Won my first (non-walkover) game on the BSG on Saturday.
Earlier this month my SEA MMR was down so low recently I was playing Bronzies and losing some so I had work to do - I've gone into my shed and polished a few things to nail my only build (1 rax FE then reactionary) and had a good run to try and finish Top 8 Gold in this season.
Last evening after a few beers and a few good macro games I came across a Protoss player...fine, can handle them thought I....
I knew something was definitely wrong when after my barracks building SCV (at 10 HP) was deftly replaced with a fresh full health worker, the comments from the opponent started...
"you"
"are"
"not"
"bronze"
"wtf"
"asl?"
I couldn't reply as my APM was needed entirely to put down the new command centre at the expansion. What is ASL anyway - a Pro League...you're having a laugh mate.
I thought about relpying after this but normal supply block at 19 put chatting far out of my mind.
My scouting SCV got Zealot chopped before it managed to enter the opponents base at the cross position. Damn, have to use a scan in a few minutes (which of course I forgot about).
With anxiety levels building and to give my earlier barracks SCV another chance I pulled it down to build a bunker, still on 10 HP. The poor guy was quickly sniped by a Stalker but replaced with three more SCVs showing my mouse accuracy. 2 marines and the bonus SCVs managed to hold off stalker/zealot poke pretty well, but killed nothing.
"what league?" asked my opponent. No reply.
Very scared now, decided to turtle with 2 more bunkers.
Also decided to do a cheeky bronze macro and sent 2 workers off to both other corners ready to build bases later as I figured I will soon be trapped in my corner.
Protoss timing attack repelled by 3 bunkers and a mass of marines left in front to soak some damage so the precious bunkers don't get too hurt.
Every SCV pulled to repair the remaining bunker which was of course on fire.
"Gold?" he asked again. No reply.
My 3rd base was up, but I was not going to lose a ton of SCVs in the utter darkness which was the minimap / my vision. So had to use mules & build SCVs there.
Things were humming - medivacs out, loaded up and waypointed all around the edge of the map. 4th base ready to build at the other corner. Upgrades kicking in.
As they passed my 3rd base I noticed a wierd red blip near my vespene geyser. Too big for a unit I looked - a pylon! A pylon in my 3rd base and my medivacs flew right over it.
Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound...
Dropping masterfully from 4 medivacs right in his SCV line...as I went back to macro those large crossed lasers came out the corner of my screen. OMG. Collossus.
Right lads, back in the airbus. Collosus can't hit aircraft. Ha Ha.
But blink stalkers can. Damn. Two medivacs gone.
Flying back over the same pylon that foresaw my doom, I forgot to snipe it. Which was a pretty clever absence of decision making actually as soon afterwards, the base went down. I've no idea what to...couldn't look...just lots of red dots on the minimap.
I decided to macro my fourth (hopefully secret) base and added on my usual 6 raxes which is the natural response to almost 1,000 minerals in the bank.
Back at my main base the collossi and zealots charged in as half my marines looked out of the window of the medivacs. Damn.
But wait - I'll drop them on the cliffs and they can fire down. Genius.
Of course collossi can see cliffs and they can also fire on cliffs and melt marines, pretty quickly.
I lifted my factory to allow the single tank to try and runover some stalkers.
My backup missile turret was still up and clearly saw DT's sneaking past. SCVs are not that great against DTs.
I finally found the APM to reply.
"I'm gold".
We then preceeded to have a chat.
"You played really good" says my gracious opponent.
"You are a smurf" I say, not being really annoyed
"Of course. lol"
"I was hoping to get Top 8 Gold this season" I cry like a 5 year old.
He quits. Wow.
Post game we have a long chat starting with me thanking him for giving me the precious 10pts but keeping the moral high ground and disagreeing with it in principal.
More laughs and good banter - he is a top Masters player who is out of form/taken a break so smurfing to get back into shape. Fair enough.
We then proceeded to Skype and I had a free 45min lesson on the phone with this guy who was as tipsy as I was, but an incredible font of knowledge - how the hell do you know all this stuff?
"After 2 years non stop SC2 and SC1 before, it sort of sinks in".
I've a long way to go.
We then had another game...
He offraced as Zerg as I really struggle v them. He knew my only build and I said I was going to do it - 1 rax FE.
Every single thing clicked, I was on fire. Complete indirect map control looking for his expansions, units well upgraded, lots of production. Hotkeys used. 4 bases up. Multidropping with single/double medivacs, stimming and then macroing / attacking somewhere else.
The zerglings couldn't cope, the banelings couldn't catch the stimmed marine ball running away (splits - don't need them!) past the single seige tank which took them down. Roaches - nah, they go down to 3/3 marines eventually with 10 medivacs floating around. Muta's...no chance. Infestors...not against 2 seige tanks when you're not microing them.
I sniped 2 bases, killed all the drones at the main and ran up my army to his natural. Stim, take down the morphing broodlords. Put my 5th base up.
GG
Whoa
"You GG'd"
"Yep"
"I won?"
"Yep. Well done. I couldn't cope with your attacks or harrassment"
I had just beaten a high Masters player.
Seriously cannot thank this guy enough. Learned so much and for free / fun from him. Love SC2 / SEASC2 / This community.
Totally ecstatic I told my wife.
"That's great honey, I'm off to bed".
Still buzzing I was ready for my assault on the Top 8 of Gold League...
lol ZooS nice read bro and just make bunker and repair > 4gate

ASL is usually a short form of Age/Sex/Location, which users of IRC commonly used a long time ago when they meet new people. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean the pro league. You must be new to the internet
