I got a half decent beard but it seems this on isn't so lucky as my previous beard
I'm sitting on less than $200 to my name and have to move out in a week... I can at least hide my stuff at my gf's place and live out of bath houses (gf super conservative parents means I can't stay with the gf)
Luckily I still got a month on my visa to find a job and that is not going well so far either...
I want to stay in Korea and support my gf as she finishes her final year of vet studies so would rather avoid going back to Aus just yet
I really want to avoid going back to english teaching because majority of places do not treat foreign teachers well. If you manage to get good co-workers and mostly nice students its great but yeah... very rare.
No luck on the non teaching jobs I have applied for which is sad
So now i'm thinking what should I do now and in the future??? I have been trying to think of ways to make a little side money so I can have more time to look for a decent job here. Like could I do youtube videos to make a few dollars here and there? Or do like destiny and stream a **** tonne. What would I do for content if I did do that? I wouldn't need a lot of money to get by in Korea too... shit should I try to go pro at sc2? It wouldn't be impossible if I can just take a more positive attitude towards the game...
So thats immediate future but what about a future career? 27 and i'm at a loss as to exactly what I want to do and what I will be able to do. I'm pursuing game development as I think thats something I would really really enjoy and be good at but until I get enough money to hire a coder or manage to teach myself enough programming I can't really make much progress there
I also enjoy video editing but not sure if thats much of a career or if I would be able to get a job doing that
Should I pursue writing, something my professor said I should seriously consider... But I can't really make anything with that in the short term
I know I want to work in some creative field just not sure about how to get an in
Anyone with ideas on how to be able to make some money on the side?
And anyone know about - or work in - anything related to game dev, writing, film and the like?
I don't sleep well - even by my standards - for some time so forgive me if this blog is like the written equivalent of bourne ultimatum's cinematography :S
Ive done a quick course in game dev (cert 2) and a good friend of mine did a full cert in it and now owns his own indie place with friends. If i can help you at all in that let me know. Its also what im going to do in future after uni is done.
If you want to know about writing hit up dippa. Hes the best writer ive seen around.
If you just desperately need a bit of money, go back to this. Try and work less (enough to get by) and use the rest of your time trying to find the way into whatever you decide you'd prefer to do (try and build up some writing or video editing services or something, but that kind of thing doesn't make a living overnight).
I say stick it out with teaching until you can make it back to Aus if you cant live with your gf, have you asked if you can stay with your gf parents instead?
im not a lawyer, doctor or CEO so her parents only let her see me because she lies to them No chance of staying with them
I will do english teaching if I can land a job doing that - its getting harder and harder with more americans coming over and the koreans think that american is the true form of english :s
I did a year and a half of study on the artistic side of game dev, most of which is obsolete now haha.
Yeah I think game design/development combines pretty much everything I enjoy but don't want to end up working for a shitty company putting out the umpteenth bloody sports game or modern warfare shooter.
I did some work for a guy who was the lead designer for all the gore (just the gore!) in modern warfare. He lives in a big fkn house. tho, this does not help your situation
Maybe try and get a job at a bank or similar large corporation that has a graphic design department/ section will give you training as you progress along. This kind of job might progress from low responsiblity web design up to the management of creative projects for their online section. I think there is decent money doing this and a proper career pathway for the longer term. Also banks have branches all over the place so you could transfer to a branch in Aus when you are ready to move on from Korea.
