Never thought there would be a better "detective/whodunit" series in this genre than "The Mentalist" which usually has a super smart but somehow still believable protagonist who uses his incredible powers of deduction / cold reading to solve cases that leave you going wow.
The first part of the anime "Death note" was great, the TV series "lie to me" was decent, "psych" was terrible, the movie sherlock holmes was mediocre (which is alot to say since i usually love guy richie stuff) but omg Sherlock Holmes the TV series by BBC is by far the best i have seen in this niche area. It isnt just some crappy production trying to bank in on the Sherlock Holmes name like so many of these modern day remakes but rather a super well produced and written mini-series.
So yea if you liked the mentalist you would love this show.
This youtube video doesn't do it justice at all but thats all i could find. Season 2 starts later this season, what a shame both are only 3 episodes long!

HOW IS PSYCH TERRIBLE?!!?

Psych isn't meant to be so much of a detective/whodunit show, but more of a comedy! The chemistry between shaun and gus is just HILARIOUS and I'm pretty sure they ad-lib many of their lines. There's no way their lines can be scripted!
I downloaded this out of curiosity last year and I have to say, I was SO pleasantly surprised. Everyone I passed it on to fell in love with it as well. My only disappointment came when I went searching for another episode on the 4th week, only to discover it was just a 3-part mini-series. Been desperately waiting for the next season ever since!
The actor who plays Sherlock is just so insanely good. I was so shocked when he made his first appearance... such a young and bright face? But his voice, tone and eccentric attitude are just so awesome.

Indeed... I saw the London royal theatre's recent Frankenstein production and he is one of the two leads in that and was excellent. It's actually really cool how the two leads actually swap roles on each night of the performance, too.
I keep hearing how good this show is, but I haven't watched it yet.
And yes, L is by -far- the best character in Death Note...
