Right apparently there's a bit of shit going round about this so let's go.
I was 2-2 in groups at ACL before I had to play my team mate Pokerface. If was lucky, a 3-2 finish might be enough to put me through to top 8, assuming everyone else except ninja was 3-2 or worse. Benji did not know my results properly though and thought I had no chance at all of making top 8 so he asked that I throw my games to pokerface purposefully to smooth his way through.
I explained that whilst I had a chance to possibly make top 8 I wouldn't do that. But if I had definitely no chance of making top 8 at all in any way then I would gladly throw the series to a team mate, like I assume anyone else would do for theirs. So I played him properly, won 2-0 and the end result was that poker got top 8 and I did not. No harm done at all, unless you don't like all Zerg top 8's. I myself have been the beneficiary of intentional game throwing in the past and that's perfectly ok.
That's it. That's the entirety of it. Benji is not going to ask someone to purposefully lose a tournament, such a thing is ******* insane and benji is not, it turns out, ******* insane. I dunno how this became a rumour or whatever but it's complete bullshit, so cut it out.
At least that's my view on this. Perhaps I have missed something.
And I can't actually believe how airy you are about it. "Benji didn't ask me to lose the tournament on purpose. He _just_ asked me to cheat. No biggy!"
Remember slayers`coca? Banned for 6 months from the most prestigious tournament series in the SC2 scene and looked down upon by his peers for exactly the same thing. In fact asking such thing should be punished in some way or another at least. If I was king of Esports I'd slam Benji with my hammer. Alas Im just a mediocre GM player without any achievements so I guess I won't get my way;(
I agree with everything you are saying, especially ruining another competitors chances by game fixing.
I can also see it is historically frowned upon in Korea and anything competitive.
But I'm with Pinder here that there isn't a doubt I wouldn't help my friend/teammate in THAT situation if I could, if that is an attitude issue then oh well. Everybody has different values and opinions, as long we all understand where each other is coming from we can agree and disagree while being respectable for each others opinions.
Prevention and implicity is definitely a better answer - So yes, ofcourse I would never do such a thing!
We have the same problem in my jiujitsu comps, I've missed medals because of "gentlemen's agreements" where team mates wont fight each other. There's pretty much no way to control or police the issue, and its an inherent part of teammates competing in 1v1 tournaments together.
It just comes down to each persons own personal morals. It is what it is I guess. Seems like it would a bit disrespectful to the (e)sport to have them actually play the games out though, I think it should just be stated, "Teammate A gave teammate B a walkover", the alternative is a waste of time.
