Hey kiddies, I'll cut to the chase. Im running i7 3.2 ghz processor, I think 16 gig RAM, ATI Radeon 7770, 550 wat power supply, 1 TB HD.

About 6-12 months ago I upped my video card to the ATI 7770 because I would get this error: https://forum.solidworks.com/servlet...84-26176/4.PNG

However this didn't fix the issue.

From reading various forums and my own limited knowledge, I'm lead to believe this is probably because of a power issue? If so, What cheap and good power supplies would fit my specs?

I'm also lead to believe its a power issue as I bought a new snazzy mic. When I proceeded to plug it in I got a weird message saying "USB Power supply inefficient" or some shit.

If it isn't a power issue tho and there is another way to fix it I'm all ears, Thanks!

Re: Need some tech help please!

What kind of power supply is it?

Intuitively (without knowing the actual draw of some of those models of processor/graphics card) 550W -should- be sufficient, but some brands list peak rather than what is available on constant draw/don't specify how much of that wattage/current is available on certain rails etc.

Do you ever get a similar error plugging in other USB devices (a USB hard drive or something else that should draw a bit of power)?

Also, that link doesn't show me an actual error message (could be a work proxy thing)....

EDIT: apparently those specs should be draing <400W so unless you've gone for some incredibly no-name power supply that should be fine unless it's actually dying.

I'm at work atm, but will check specific power supply stuff/edit in when I get home, and nah no similar error messages when I plug in other USB devices. Could blackwidow ultimate keyboard/deathadder mouse/headphones drain the extra wattage as they all use lights/extra power? Or is it negligible?

Possibly... they will draw more current, so the amount of current available on the 5V rail for your particular power supply might be relevant.

550W doesn't sound like very much,

enter your details on a calculator like this: http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/Power
see if 550 is more than the recommended watts.

as for the mic, is it because you are connecting it into an unpowered usb port? try some of the other ports. I think powered ports have different colours? can't remember

Re: Need some tech help please!

550W should be perfectly fine, I'm running the same card on 500W. Find out exactly what brand and model it is - if it's a POS it may not actually be capable of 500W continuous, good power quality.

Not all USB ports are the same. Are you using the ones at the back of your computer?

The error you're getting is a graphics card driver issue. If it still says nvidia, that's because you've still got nvidia drivers from your old card, they need to be removed. While you're at it, update your AMD graphics driver as well.

550W is a lot... most people don't realise how little power there pc actually draws and way overspec their PSU.

As I said, it's < 400W.

There are no unpowered USB ports. There are charging ports and regular ports. regular ones are limited to 500mA after negotiating if it's available. Charging ports can draw 1.5A without negotiating. If you check the data sheet for the particular PSU you can see how much current it allows on the 5V rail (a good quality PSU like seasonic will let you draw > 20A, whereas something like thermaltake only allow 15A).

Ok im using a sun pro ATX 550. I've chopped and changed ports, mic was working, then stopped working in all said ports. Said ports definitely working as other gear works in them, but I don't think the mic is faulty either. Any other recommendations?

Re: Need some tech help please!

Hard to find good information on a company without a decent website who just onsell stuff, but the best I can find suggests that is probably built by raidmax who are pretty well known for rather crappy PSUs. the raidmax website lists decent enough looking specs though (24A current on the 5V rail) so assuming it hasn't blown up yet, it shouldn't be doing this.

if you unplug all other USB devices and just plug in the mic, do you still get errors?

Yeah tried all that, no luck. Looked at all mic settings that I know of, not working. Any settings I could try? I went Control panel > Sound > Recording >yeti microphone properties, all looks fine there.

Re: Need some tech help please!

you're power supply seems to be an el-cheapo POS from a quick google.
Not all PSU's are made equal and as erasmus says a 500w should be okay running that card (especially ati 7000 series are good for not using excessive amounts of power)
I can't see the picture so don't know the error but from the sounds of it could be PSU problem or your motherboard or both - a poor PSU will damage a motherboard over time. That said I wouldn't run out and replace anything (unless you have the money to spare) until you're tried a format and reinstall of windows to ensure it isn't software issues

Re: Need some tech help please!

I'd recommend a 'real' PSU supplier like Corsair or SilverStone to provide the 'clean' power required for most modern systems. Despite minimum recommendations from AMD saying that a 500W PSU will be sufficient (http://www.amd.com/us/products/deskt...on-7770.aspx#3), you need to take into account the power required for other components in the system. The min spec is running the PC at its least potential. Most GFX cards require a decent PSU these days as most of them can be put into SLI or Crossfire these days and the extra grunt allows for expandability for newer GFX extra drives etc.

I am using a Corsair TX 750W PSU (~$140) to power a GTX 680 with an i7 3770k CPU and 6 Hard Drives. I have never had an issue with power.

Re: Need some tech help please!

Graphics cards and most other other high power components run off the 12V rail though. USB devices are powered off the 5V rail. The graphics driver thing appears to be software as it's crashes in a driver for a no longer connected device. So the problem appears to be solely relating to the 5V rail.

If the mic by itself with no other devices plugged in gives the same "not enough power" message it's not that the 5V rail is supplying too little power either.

So do all USB ports do the same thing? Does the mic have a replacable cable? Can you try plugging into a USB port on another computer? Some USB ports require establishing a contract with the host controller to draw above 100mA of power... could be something wrong with your mic/the cable itself which is failing this. (don't really know enough about it to know what that would be though).

Any luck with this?
Just to confirm, the same issue occurred with both graphics cards?
is it an ATI card or an Nvidia card? the error says 'display driver Nvidia' but its an ATI card?
