My name is Fourby, I have been playing starcraft 2 seriously since around February/March, ranked around 15-20 Masters. (yay!)
The game it self is amazing, at first when I played it in around November last year I didn't really get used to it and just gave up lol. But after finding someone to practice with (Bishop, P GM) he showed me the main structure of the game and some basic builds, and since then I have been starving to learn more and more about the game.
Coming from a high level on Age of Empires 3 (still world ranked like 20th or something haha) I was quick to learn and adapt into sc2 and quickly went from gold to diamond and eventually masters in season 2. This of course was with the help of this tightly knit SEA community which is just awesome, without the help and practice with you guys i would never have been able to get quite so intrigued by this game. And for this Thank you.
Although it was not just the help from other that helped me to grow as a player, but to help those that were lower than my level to rise up, also helped me grow further. Seeing other players mistakes as well as my own allowed growth in the depth of my thinking. I would also like to thank those who have asked for my help, as it also helped me .
Now lets talk about "Balance", since I have actually copped a lot of BM from those who like to QQ after losing a game (as everyone would have experienced at one point or another).
In my PERSONAL VIEW, I find this game really quite well balanced. It's not easy to have 3 completely different races, and balance them out perfectly, but I think they have done a really good job so far. (Unlike AoE3 where you have 8 very similar civilizations with just minor differences)
The way I see it, each race has advantages and disadvantages, and because they are so different of course this results in each race requiring more skill in certain area's (some being more micro or macro intensive for e.g).
I'll just list 3 points I can think of for 3 races of the top of my head.
Protoss.
-The units are stronger yes, but they are really quite expensive and really not that mobile, bar blink stalkers.
-Ok mass ff's are quite OP but how much are sentries?!, they are quite fragile and expensive as well as slow. Protoss needs these as their death ball is so immobile, they cant flank like Zerg or do multi drops like terran with 8 marauders and snipe important buildings -.-. WE NEED THEM TO LIVE!
-Colossus, Yeh sure they deal a dickload of damage but they aren't exactly the toughest unit out there, make a decent amount of vikings or corruptors and they become like croissants at tea time for your army.
Terran.
-Marauders are OP vs us poor armour heavy protoss, but aren't impossible to deal with.
-Yes marines are quite a strong 50 mineral tier 1 unit. They can hit both air and ground and have a ridiculous DPS, but other than that they are really squishy lol. IDK mass marine scv all in still sucks lol
-Drops are gay.
Zerg.
-Although their units one for one are weaker, their strength in numbers is where they shine. Their ability to mass 20 units at a time really allows them to react to incoming attacks with the right units well.
- combine this with their mobility and you have yourself a deadly swarm which can produce a stream of units from one side of the map to the other. Also really handy for ling/muta counter attacks which keep protoss either in their base or forced to base race (you see this alot in GSL)
-The thing I have been hearing alot lately is their lack of scouting ability, which I don't completely disagree with, but too few zerg players try and just run a few speedlings to your base to just see your army comp once and while. You could at least do THAT before you complain to me in a pm after the game after you lose -.-.
Just a reminder that all this is just from how I see it personally, and there are a lot of things I have missed. But I do encourage you to discuss this with me here coz im all ears
Why I picked Protoss.
Well, after playing random and not getting anywhere. I decided to pick one race so I could learn it in and out, and of course with this came some good help from Bishop.
I found that it was the closest thing to AoE because of the way you micro your units. Like stalkers for example are microed almost exactly the same as you would with skirmishers and muskets lol.
Also the fact you can warp in units from a forward pylon.
In AoE it was very rare to not have a forward base, and since you don't really do that on sc2 i found having this ability was more useful XD.
Oh which leads me to another thing, People think its retarded that we can do that. Well there is actually a big disadvantage to that as well as the obvious advantages that go with it.
-While in a large battle, you actually have to take your screen away from the battle to a forward pylon to warp in units (unlike other race's reinforcements where you can just macro it on your keyboard), leaving your units to fend for themselves. Even though this might be such a small amount of time, the amount of times I had colossus sniped during is just ridiculous lol.
Anyway, that is all I thought I would say in my spare time lol.
Again I would like to thank Nirvana and all the guys that helped out to make the GM manual, it really helped me improve quick.
As well as all the guys who have helped me out with custom games etc. (too many to name but most of the guys from TA, esp sCarLet coz hes gay)
If anyone wants some games with masters level Protoss, I'm always there to help out, just give me and add samboy_04@hotmail.com, Skype - dude515 (or you could usually find me in the 2bh or [ta] channel) *riiChard tell me if u want me to remove this to prevent people flooding your channel lol*
Please leave some constructive things in your comments as I look forward to reading them
When i played AoE3 i was i think lvl9 Lance Corporal I was that bad.
Jokes aside, i really enjoyed reading this. I love seeing things from different people's perspectives because it widens my horizon so to speak about the game and balance etc.
