most of the competitive player base is students (high school and uni) here.
Not supprized by the drop because it is exam season.
Plus imo HoS is probably getting fans distracted from WoL.
re: byoc events. As nom said, a lot of players are students. A lot of them don't drive. Most of them have a desktop for gaming (going off my experience at SGL) which is hard to move around. Maybe, since a lot of them have at least a few computers around to hire/use on a first come first served basis they could have a few players qualify online and get a reserved computer (i.e. dreamhack style with a byoc qualifier on the day and some invited/qualified pros). I could see this dragging in a few more higher level players.
Rather than just telling the players they should be there, we should ask them what would make them want to go?
Without worrying about the logistics of moving a heavy desktop to a BYOC event. I never knew about any of these LAN events and I'm from Sydney myself... I'll make sure to check the tournament section more but I think they should be trying harder to get their event out there.
I would definitely go to any event with a prize pool assuming I can actually get my PC down there. But first I need to know it exists
Even as someone with a car, BYOC is a bit of a pain in the ass; and I imagine for those without cars and with desktops it's a dealbreaker. If you're interested in the whole LAN event that the tournaments are usually attached to they're good fun, but from the perspective of someone who just wants to play the tournament and head home, it's not great. Obviously we can't change this though - if there's prize money available due to a BYOC LAN organisation, then it's still worth going. I know I'll be going to respawn as long as the SC2 tourney has a somewhat decent prize attached to it, despite the hassle.
I think there's still a large base of Australian sc2 fans who don't know/care about the local scene, and that's who you should be trying to tap in to. The international view counts may be declining, but I imagine there's still a good 90% of Australian fans who don't watch SEA events. How to get them watching, I don't know.

This is something very true, and it's bothered me for ages. Hundreds of people at a barcraft in sydney to watch sc2... so many more than most streamed sea tourneys get worldwide. I was stopped by 3 different people on my home from ACL Sydney wearing my TL shirt asking if there was a barcraft that night they'd missed, and they'd never heard of ACL when I told them.
I agree with Pox in regards to Sc2 players not knowing at all about the scene ir the community that is out there.
When I talk to some of the people at EB games or maybe come into work with a new game or whatever, I always find it interesting when I start talking to them about the competiive and communal nature of the Sc2 community and the most common reaction is "Why haven't I heard of this? How can I become more involved in such a community?"
But that is only from a New Zealand perspective, but i guess it is relevant with most scenes, those who need to know generally are more involved, always hopeful for change though ^^
Just and fyi, in terms of LAN Event attendance its down across the board (SCII, LoL and Dota2), compared to the last couple of months on average about 30%. For Starcraft 2 (and other games) the best way to help increase attendance is for people to spread the word, you see an event in your area? paste the link in your clan chat, your pro team chat, share it on facebook and twitter, get the message out there, the main reason why people dont go is because they dont know the event exists.

why is this topic even still feigning relevance, there are more than enough tournaments to over-saturate the scene with overlapping events every weekend......
the whole "sc2 is dying" garbage was stupid before it even begun, and the fact that it still has any traction is embarassing
