Hi, I am Mack 'Petraeus' Smith.
Recently I won the NZ/PH Tokyo Game Show Qualifiers and am going to Tokyo in 6 days
As part of the prize, they provided $1000 USD. So far I have raised $350 NZD from Family/Barcraft NZ but I'm still short $750 NZD.
Rogue has kindly made a ChipIn page for me in the hope of raising some of the funds needed. Any donations would be much appreciated Thanks.
I don't really get the point of this, It's not like if we donate or don't donate you're still going. If it was really urgent to pay your mum back did you really think it was possible to raise a total of $700 in a short amount of time by these donations?
"Hey man I understand if you are feeling hurt that you didn't get to go to Tokyo or something but no need to take it out on me Thanks."
PMed by Petraeus after I replied "why bother" on this thread
maybe if you were a respectable member of the SEA scene like PiG and didn't start so much drama you would be able to earn $700 from these donations.
Ok... its true that I will be going regardless of the donations but the fact remains that the money still needs to be paid.. if I can't raise all of the money from donations thats fine but any I can will help greatly as at the moment I don't know where I can raise the rest.
As for the PM, that was a response to the comments you made towards me on battle.net which were quite unpleasant. I have no idea why you would make something up like that =/
esports dollars is not a sure thing, especially when sponsors like to flick a switch between giving money or keeping their purses shut - and you don't know which one is coming.
i felt really bad about asking for donations for pig as well, but at the end of the day, they're DONATIONS. Give if you want, **** off if you don't want to.

You shouldn't have told people that your air tickets were already paid for(by your parents) and made it sound like the community is paying a loan to your mom. :/ Also, your circumstances were different, compared to people who really needed it(or possibly lose the chance of going).
On a more meaningful & positive note, this just gives you extra motivation and determination to secure a podium finish and pay her back the $700 using the prize money It's not a bad situation, at all, just how you depict it.
Maybe you should reword the original post to say that your flights have already been paid for, and we aren't paying to send you over, we are paying off your loan to your mother.
This is kind of my point - you decided to sign up and qualify, therefore should take responsibility for the costs involved, not throw it over to community and make it sound like you urgently need assistance getting over there. If you are going regardless, I feel you should work to pay off your mother, rather than expect the community to front up the money.
I know it'll sound cliche but when i was younger, $700 was a lot of money. If i wanted that kind of money I would have to work my ass off for it. I'm all for supporting the community, but there has to be a line somewhere.
I'm not having a go at you personally, I have nothing against you. I just don't like the situation and I believe you are approaching it the wrong way. Anyway, I've already stated my opinion more than I should have.
UHF, While I support and was about to donate to PiG - I just want to bring you back to this. Basically Pet is being judge by who everyone perceives him to be, and not by what he is actually asking. However, many of you are making attacks against his action of merely asking for support. I return you back to the PiG donations for an example. PiG had already sorted his flights, afaik he borrowed some of the money for the trip from DoT. The money raised was helping him pay her and others back for the rest of his trip. His actions, of asking for support to attend an international event, were supported and cheered for - rasing $500+ in less than thirty minutes (additionally, the thread was posted rather late).
Pet is, also, asking for support to attend an international event. However, everyone is attacking this request for support, when someone else did the same thing but was supported? If thats you, you're not against the action of asking for support at all, you just don't like Pet. Everyone can see that he believed his trip would be supported by his sponsored team, but it wasn't. Everyone should also realise - Pet is a kid, merely 16 years old. Sure he may not always make the most thought out decisions, but he's 16 for god sake.
Cut the kid some ******* slack. If you don't agree, don't donate. But please - don't attack the kid anymore. It's not necessary.
Everyone that posted in this blog chastising Pet really needs to be ashamed of themselves. Pinder is no different, even though you're just passing on a message from TargA -- you know that he was being extremely offensive and yet you chose to post it.
When PiG did this, everyone cheered and jumped and it was a bloody news post. A player somewhat less recognized (and yes, slightly worse manner) does it and you all go nuts on him? What a joke of a "community". Deadset showing some of your true colours here boys.
do·na·tion [doh-ney-shuhn]
noun
1.
an act or instance of presenting something as a gift, grant, or contribution.
2.
a gift, as to a fund; contribution.
A Donation is completely optional. who cares how he gets the money even if he does have to ask others for it, it still doesn't matter. The trip could be funded with laundered money for all i care.
tgun, the minority who are behaving that way does not reflect our whole community. Within every community no matter how great will also have a few bad apples. Why do you think TargA was banned from the forums in the first place? And did you know that we were totally cool before then one day that the dude went ape shit at me because i warned him on the fourm for a personal attack against Benji? And hes hated me since.
If you guys don't believe in donating by all means don't. But there is no need to try and ruin his blog and plea for donations.
I was just wondering Petraeus, why is there such an urgency on paying back your mother? You're at the age where you are not independent so really what is going to happen if you don't pay the money back in time for whenever the deadline is? Will you be kicked out of home or something? What I am getting at is that since the money has been paid and your trip is decided, why can't you just get a part time job or some other form of income when you return from Tokyo so you can pay off the debt?
I still don't agree with everyone being so overtly critical, but I am just wondering about why this is so urgent?

There really aren't that many attacks in this thread - maybe the first post and thats it. The rest is simply people either stating their opinions or asking questions. That's why this forum is here for, people to post and respond. Just because you don't get the response you want doesn't mean you guys need to go bananas on us - yet because we have a different opinion we are told to shut up / stop posting.
When i first saw the post it basically read as "I need some money or I can't go". Then we find out from second hand sources that has already purchased the tickets and is going regardless.
For me it was the fact he went and racked up $1100 in debt paying for travel, and his first port of call is to ask the community to pay it off without laying down the full truth. I think you'll be hardpressed to find anyone who things it's a good idea to go into debt without having a guaranteed source of money to pay it - especially if you are only 16.
Yes what PiG did was similar, however this IS PiG's job and livelyhood - he has no other method of paying for something on short notice. Pet is 16 and this isn't his job, it's a hobby, something you don't go $1100 in debt before working out if you can pay it off. I understand the whole "he's asking for a donation" and its optional, but I don't like the premise of how he went about getting the debt and then wording it when he asked for the donations.
This is NOT an attack on Pet and I'm not trying to ruin his blog - like you said if people want to donate they will, if not then they won't. Maybe I am being harsh and over-reacting, and for that i'm sorry - but I'm not sorry for having an opinion.

I won't be kicked out of the house.. But my family isn't in a good enough financial state to just be able to pay for it without some kind of consequence. So I don't actually know what exactly would happen but it could very well be as drastic as me having to sell my computer.
I really don't have the time for a part time job and there aren't many options around where I live. That could be an option if this fails but I am going to try coaching instead. Everyone stating that I should just get a job... I'm asking for donations so I can actually practice each day and keep up with school. If you don't want to donate for that reason then just don't ._.

Ok I'll admit I could have added more detail to the OP however I did state that I was leaving for Tokyo in 6 days..
I also fail to see the difference between what PiG is doing and what I am apart from the fact he practices a lot more and is better than me. You are saying that he has no other method of paying for his flights? PiG and I both have the option of going out and getting a 'real' job. However we choose not to. Who are you to say SC2 is just a hobby for me?
Anyway I understand you are just staying your opinion and I thank you for pointing that out.
Well it is his job as he makes his living (afaik) off his role in the eSports world - coaching, representing sponsors, tournament winnings. For most of the Starcraft 2 population (including yourself) it is just a hobby whether you'd like to admit it not. It is not a method you are using to support yourself off (even if you'd like to do so in the future).
Like you said, your family isn't in the financial state to front the money for an $1100 trip to Japan. However you find yourself in this situation, $1100 in debt to your family who can't afford it, with no method of paying it off (afaik you don't have a job at the moment) other than to ask for donations. This is a little irresponsible on your part, especially organising travel first. Even if you thought your previous sponsors would back you, you still didn't have confirmation on what quite honestly is a lot of money for anyone in the eSports scene. Keep in mind, you are already getting a $1000 stipend which is basically a donation already!
Without full knowledge of your personal life, I guess I might be treading a fine line - so I am sorry if I've upset you. I don't blame you for doing everything in your power to take this opportunity, as it will be a fantastic experience for you. Hopefully you learn a lot from this whole ordeal, and are successful over in Japan so you will be in a better position the next time you are in this situation.
