Hey guys! I had a bit of a break from SC2 for a while. Got into League of legends and just general schoolwork being the oh-so-hard taskmaster that it is. However, after a bit of a LAN recently, I've decided to get back into SC2! I'm aware that this is my first blog post ever, so I thought i'd give a bit of background info? Oh well. It's a blog. It's supposed to be personal, so who cares?
So I played two games after a ridiculously long break and got promoted straight into Gold. I was thinking "Heck yes! Does this mean I've improved?" Then I remembered that it had been months since the last SC2 game I'd played and decided I shouldn't have given up when I was (unknowingly) so close to promotion. But I digress.
The strange thing is, I feel like i'm playing better now than i was 2-3 months ago. I was pondering as to why this is and came to the following conclusion: I'm in it only to improve and have fun at the moment.
Before, when i was in silver, I was constantly trying to just WIN with the horrible macro/mechanics I had. After every game that i won I would just go "hellz yeah" and hit "find match" hoping for a repeat. After every game I lost I would simply say something like "OMG Terran marauders are OP" or "Oh well, guess i'd better work on my macro hey?" and things like that. Generic bullcrap statements that didn't go anywhere or help me improve in anyway.
I came back to SC2 and after the promotion to gold decided I would simply "pick a goal". I decided to pick "focus on making workers constantly". After a few games, I actually started tog et good at it, to the point where up until I expand I am almost ALWAYS making workers (almost, because I'm gold and therefore SO not perfect). That started to feel pretty good.
So the next thing I did was pick the goal "keep money low by producing units constantly, with the priority order of workers > units unless being all in'd". sounds a bit wordy, but it's pretty simple. low and behold, up until i expand i have stupidly low money in almost every game. Expanding is a bit iffy, because that's where my APM takes a bit of a toll. Oh well, still learning!
Anyway, I'm really enjoying SC2 again, especially since LoL requires you to rely sooooo heavily on your teammates not being idiots/feeders (there is ALWAYS one in every game and 90% of the time they're on my team). So yeah. Hoping to keep improving with this whole "set a goal and work towards it thing". Maybe one day I'll make masters? who knows?
Oh well, cheers for reading. Hoping to make this a consistent thing. Enjoy the rest of your day/night/ whatever time it is where you are.
Re: WagonWheel's return to SC2 with a surprise Gold promiton!
haha good goals to set! thats definitely how u work ur way up by working on each individual fundamental skill of a sc plyaer :]
lol but i think "Oh well, guess i'd better work on my macro hey?" is still a good goal ahhahahah :P
gluck man and gratz on promotion! i just got (back) to diamond as well since i got demoted trying to play zerg xD
Re: WagonWheel's return to SC2 with a surprise Gold promiton!
Good to have you back man. Little goals are definitely the way to do it - don't be afraid to experiment, and most of all enjoy yourself - that's the important bit.
Looking forward to some more blog posts with progress updates
