Something online has been irking me lately, and everyone knows that the best way to get that out of your system is to post on an online forum where you sit safe behind your keyboard and only have to suffer the wroth of other people sitting behind keyboards. So here goes, I'll sum it all up in one sentence and then explain myself.
You may be a troll, but that doesn't stop myself or the majority of people reading your post from thinking you're a complete asshole.
I'll start off by saying that I don't think all troll's are assholes. For example, yaaaaang's recent TA negrep train thread (here if you didn't see it) was a well placed jab at the infamous TA hate train, which is misused by many people to disregard the effectiveness of the now non-existent negative reputation option. Really it was just a generalised term and yaaang's jab hit the mark, 'trolling' well.
So trolling by definition is saying something or doing something which is designed to provoke a response from someone else, or to disrupt the topic and turn attention towards something else, usually themselves.
Using 'I was trolling' as an excuse for every single thing you do or say however, does not stop you from being an asshole. You may in fact be 'trolling' by the definition of the term, but i would hope that the majority of the community would realise how pathetic and small you really are. Unfortunately, quite a few people get away with a huge amount of things, either insulting or making snide comments about other players, disregarding certain rules etc. They seem to get away with it because the community has this big 'oh you' regard for certain people.
The difference between an asshole and a troll is that troll's are intelligent and put effort into their trolls. You're just berating others to make yourself feel bigger and better than you are.
David Thorne from 27bslash6, is a troll. Bloodninja (no link because some of it is exceptionally rude, google him if you want to find it) the infamous internet chat troll who would convince people to cyber and then piss them off over lengths of time by making things get really strange, he was a troll. Being an asshole does not make you a troll, and everyone needs to shatter this image that they have in their heads that every time someone insults another person or makes a joke at their expense it's a troll.

Haha I've been wanting to post a blog pretty much about the same thing!
Trolling can be funny sometimes. But when it's used as an excuse for being a ******* moron and people accept it it's just stupid. The people whom accept this excuse make me wonder if they just want to fit and are afraid to be on the wrong side of a troll so never ever get mad at people.
This leads to a complete breakdown in communication where anyone who actually tells the person to go stfu gets laughed at because they "fell for the troll". This should only happen when the troll was intelligent enough that you could have realised you were being trolled if you look close enough.
Basically it's a prank-game. But when someone (usually popular or looked up to for some reason) goes and pushes someone over you don't all side with them and laugh at the person getting pushed. There was nothing intelligent or any way to tell it was a prank.
The same sort of "**** you" trolling is not really trolling... its just being an asshole. Couldn't agree more bro
One of my favourite blogs this year! I really like this asshole and troll distinction you made, unfortunately most people can't tell the difference still.
Its so true, because sometimes trolling can be good natured and fun like the yaaaang thread which was done in good spirits and was enjoyable to readers. But when it becomes personal and used to get back at people you don't like it, you aren't a troll anymore, you're just being an asshole plain and simple.
Also, some of them get really mad when you ignore their initial "trolling" as they didn't get any reaction out of you. So what do they do? The next time they just "troll" harder and often ends up losing the little humor it had left - as they had to be more aggressive this time to try and get the reaction they wanted from the last time.. and sooner or later they just get banned from forums.
Lol no it's not about you Zealo. It was directed at a few certain people in the community, but generally i was making a comment on the communities acceptance of this 'oh you' reaction to people being assholes rather than trolls, not the trolls/assholes themselves.
Also i'll add that i don't think you're an asshole.

My biggest concern is the misuse of the term 'trolling'.
Every ************ on facebook is 'trolling' someone, or was being such a 'troll' that day. You weren't being a ******* troll - you were saying stupid shit that wasn't in any way subtle or intelligent. At the very best, the vast majority of people 'trolling' on the internet are just flaming.
That is all.
The internet is one tough customer.. thing that really pisses me off though is internet culture and networking making its way to Television.
I couldn't think of a worse way to start my day than hearing David ''Koschie'' Kosch ******* spouting facebook shit at us. Sunrise sucks dick bro, no one cares and if they do.. they're trolling.
