Hey all,
This is the first post in my blog series that I've decided to make. It will be containing stuff about starcraft 2 and eSports but not limited to that.
The mantra I have adopted this year - a new year resolution actually - is to "be better".
It's pretty simple really. I am aiming to improve at everything that I do. Being content with something is not on the cards -- I want to do nothing but improve.
The reason for this is predominately because over the last few years I haven't pushed myself to achieve or do anything which was out of my comfort zone. I think this contentment stems from my life actually being really comfortable and balanced. Why change what's not broken? Well, if I let myself go anymore I will just continue to get complacent with being average. I don't like that idea.
Facts about me:
- I am 22
- I am 82.50kg and I'm 6'0"
- I had never set foot inside a gym until 3 weeks ago
- I am in a long term relationship with the love of my life - going on 5 years
- We live together in an apartment inner city Brisbane
- I work full time in technical support at Queensland University of Technology (QUT - mega snore) and study part time (Bach IT) at the same place
- I graduate at the end of this year and should have a GPA of 5.5ish (mid credit)
- I love eSports and wish I could find a career involving it
- I recently switched to Protoss and am league
During the start of the new year I was overseas on a month long holiday. I went to Singapore and Indonesia - mainly Bali but also in Surabaya to see my girlfriend's grandparents. It was an amazing trip and a much needed holiday. It also allowed me to obtain some perspective on a few things that were going on in my life. It actually spurred one of the biggest decisions I've ever made - I'm opting to get LASIK eye surgery at the end of this month.
I've worn glasses since I was 12 or 13. They're the first thing I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off. Over time I just got used to it but only on this trip did it really become apparent how handicapped they actually made me. I wasn't able to enjoy lots of things like the beach, entertainment parks, snorkeling or scuba diving. That said, it isn't as if it tarnished my holiday, but it definitely awoke my thought process about what I could to change it.
My vision is considered to be "moderate" in terms of terribleness. I am -4.25 and -4.75 (R, L) which is called Myopia or short-sightedness. I also have a reasonably prominent astigmatism in both eyes. Essentially it means that I can see (clearly) about 20-30cm in front of me and otherwise I am hopelessly blind. What the surgery will accomplish (fingers crossed) is near perfect vision. Something I have not had in my adult or teen life (early years excluded).
It is a very expensive surgery, costing all up $4,990. Whilst it will definitely hurt the bank account it is something I am prepared to do in order to get more out of life and to be better. The surgery it self only takes about 20 minutes (10 per eye) with about 3 hours or so pre-operation preparation. Within a few days my vision should be about 90% and after about 6 months it should achieve it's maximum result.
I'm extremely excited and it's only a few weeks away until I have a brand new pair of eyes. Cannot wait to stop wearing my glasses and to enjoy the benefits of 20/20 vision.
I guess I've rambled for more than enough words for today - I might pick it up again tomorrow.
Its great having a blog to document your progress of getting better or where you want to get to in the future =). That way you can look back and be proud of what you achieved. GL on that surgery!
