If bronze league is anything like this picture suggests, I will be a happy man.
As I was having yet another competitive and hard-fought match on the Korean server with their BSG players I realised - everyone knows what Korean GMs are like. Everyone has seen their games in GSL or analysed their replays, dissecting every single one of those 400 actions per minute. What would be a lot more interesting would be the unsung heroes of the Korean ladder. We know at the highest levels the Korean server pound for pound will knock out any other in terms of skill and competition, but what about those brave Bronze soldiers in the heart of darkness that is the backwater leagues of the Korean server. Sure we can't understand their names because they look more like combos and cheat codes for a playstation fighting game (circle line circle square vs circle line square circle line), but do they deserve the derivative use of the word bronze when used in relation to StarCraft, or are they more like uncut diamonds waiting for for their chance in the spotlight?
While initially a joke write-up about how I lost my 2nd placement on Korea, my previous blog in conjunction with the wonderful blog series on teamliquid by Gheed has inspired me to start a new series. Particularly in his latest installment at my time of writing, his style and content had me laughing more than I usually do at these often try-hard humour attempts. I think this is because it hit so close to home and I could appreciate what he was experiencing and why he was doing it as I have tinkered with doing the same. Much like Gheed has attempted, I will be travelling in to the Heart of Bronze on Korea - an experience I feel will be much like Marlow felt travelling in to the unnerving depths of the Congo in Joseph Conrad's famous novella that this blog is named after.
"The horror! The horror!"
I will be using the "worker rush" strategy (known by TA as Delta Formation in various contexts) as a means to get in to bronze - basically using it until it starts working. To make sure my experience is not too similar to that by Gheed this is where the similarities will end - I will still see what it takes to lose at the lowest levels and document what lurks in the Korean abyss (though with much less writing talent) but I have a few ideas of my own on how I am going to play, and my own brand of BM. I hope you will join me on this journey and perhaps we can glimpse together at what Bronze players offer on the greener side.
Schedule:
Feb 12-13th - Begin the journey and give initial observations Feb 14th-19th - TA retreat Feb 20th-22nd - Begin Operation Delta Formation, blog week 1 Feb 22nd-26th - Delta Formation to bronze, document when delta formation stops losing Feb 28th onwards - Frequent blogs (weekly at least) until I grow bored
Oh and I will try and make sure there are replay packs or streaming sessions if any is interested, keep an eye on the blogs for updates
