Hi everyone. It has been awhile.

I've just sat for my finals. And there is a high possibility I am going to fail out of my school. With the passing grade being higher than usual (partial thanks to the student cohort), I have no one to blame but myself for not seeing that I was well and truly prepared. Contemplated suicide but I don't wish it upon my family and friends.

So, after having this talk with my parents, who are saying "wait and see", I have no idea to go about my general direction in life.

Well. Sort of. It's a matter of how do I approach my parents with the idea of letting me take a year off to do Twitch streaming.

And if that does not work out, I'll go back and do either a course in English (end goal is becoming a school counsellor but who needs that here in Malaysia right?), Business and Marketing (take over the family business, who knows, I might get to travel), Culinary Arts, Computer Science or something to do with Health and Sciences again (woohoo...)

Yes, yes. I know. Which parent is going to let their child play video games for a year? Well, not most Chinese Malaysian parents that is for sure.

Which is why I was wondering if anyone had a good way to approach this? My parents did say that now that I'm 21 I have to make my own choices but I know that there is no way in hell I'll be able to escape their influence.

TL;DR
Possibly flunked school. Thinking about streaming. Not sure how to tell parents. Need help.

+ Show +

And for those curious that if I do start streaming I will be planning to base my stream around a variety of games (against advice of most streamers I have asked). Mostly DayZ, CS:GO, SC2,MC and a few other games which I plan to do completely blind playthroughs. If possible, a few new MMOs and games that release as they come by.

7 days a week, from 12am EST / 12pm SGT / 4pm AEST / 6pm NZT for about 6 hours.

I think it is fairly common for people around your age to take a gap year to pursue something else, see the world and perhaps visit your friends, widen your horizon etc but I dun think being a full time streamer is the right way to go. Make it a soul searching year perhaps... do something different... take a break...

Life is precious. Hang on Panda... #believe

I really think that if you really put your mind to it, you can do it man. Just wake up in the morning and say "I can do it, i CAN become a popular twitch streamer"

I know others won't really agree with this, and may not agree with your goals at the moment man, but I believe in you. Quit school and become a streamer, do what you want to do man!

Good luck!

Gonna have to agree with Kez... If you want to try and be a streamer, at least part time study or work or something and then have 4-5 hours to stream. If you can get to the point you can support yourself from that streaming well great, but it's not something you can rely on, and having other experience/qualifications is good.

I have to agree with Kez. Even those big streamers are struggling to make ends meet. The market is so over-saturated right now that even if you do provide good, original content, you're gonna get drowned out by those who have already established themselves (i.e. TB, Towliee, LoL Streamers etc). I have no idea about the malay school system but my advice would be to set yourself up in the "real world" before even attempting to go into streaming. An example would be Lethalfrag. Who started out as someone who really didn't have any viewership and now pulls pretty substantial numbers, but he planned to do his 2-year straight streaming binge and had the finances to back it up.

If you are really set on streaming, my advice would be to also get a job..work during the day and then stream at night, constantly, every day. You may get tired, but the point is that you can't survive on streaming alone these days, unless you are pulling in +5K viewers..even then I'd question its sustainability. You need to 1) Constantly stream and give something original to the viewer landscape which distinguishes you from others and 2) Have the financial backing to keep it going.

I'm not saying that you don't have a chance to build up the viewership, but just going blindly into stream just doesn't cut it anymore.

Whatever you choose, GLHF

Don't really recommend streaming full time. The only way you can really support yourself through it is if you become a top streamer who gets $20 donations every 5 minutes. Which, realistically unless you're a pro player or a girl, isn't going to happen.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing..

If you think you have the time
But eventually your food won't be free
And you'll have to get offline

...*hem*. I'm all out of safety dance but seriously: Don't do this with the expectation of turning it into a livelihood. It takes a lot of time, effort and most of all luck to become a successful streamer. If you do it, do it because you want to, because you enjoy it, because it makes sense to you. But know that odds are you're going to have to go back to a more conventional life sooner rather than later.

Good luck with your results, hopefully you get lucky and can dive in to next semester with new vigour (assuming you actually want to be in the course you're in). Otherwise I reflect the common opinion here that at least part-time work or study is a sensible option.
Whatever you choose, have fun!

Re: An Impending Doom and A Journey into the Unknown

Just curious though, how did the idea of Twitch streaming hit you? Just take note, from what I observe, there are only two (sad) ways of being a good and recognised streamer.

1. Be very good at the game you're streaming
2. Be a very distinct personality

People who are one of the above would be low-mediocre viewer count. People who are both of the above get decent viewers. It isn't good to just settle for one of the above. Also to add on because I don't think anyone has mentioned yet, I don't know how are people gonna like our accent (no offence dude, we have the same accent ) because it sounds really bad unless we fake a proper accent out.

Choose the wise path. Failure is the mother of success. Doesn't matter if you're gonna fail school now, you're still young have have not "wasted" 2 years in the military like me. Get back to school and do another course you have interest in, graduate, get a job. Don't don't don't don't rely on yourself to cope through this. Share your stress and burdens with your family, I don't know what is the situation back at home for you but I hope they'll tide through this storm with you. Your close friends would be able to give you emotional and moral support too (I think you're looking for some that's why you came here, and hey, we're here for you!).

All the best Panda. I haven't even got into uni yet and I'm failing already. Can't find a proper uni that'll accept me. But I'm still trying, and I know there's always an alternate path I can take. Nothing's gonna push me down and I hope the same for you too!

Don't stream.

My recommendation is if you are going to take a gap year to go travelling. You'll learn more about yourself and gain some perspective.

School isn't everything. You can always study later on if you wish.

As others have said, try travel, get out there and see the world. If money is an issue make it a working holiday.

Or try a more established social sport/club of some kind?

To be frank, I support Kez and other of similar post! No Matter how many viewship you get from twitch. There is a good chance it won't meet ends meet (i.e. Food, Bills, Rent/Mortage, Fees, Interest, Wedding, Buying a House, etc...). Twitch is not Youtube, where popular Youtube personality can make extra money from their view counts, even than they have a day job (let alone Twitch).

In my opinion, just focus on your education (and do what you have to do to get back on track with it). Get a good job and Career! Start a Family! Live your life! Own a House! All these cost Money! Even if you still want to take a year off, just go traveling, to expand your horizon (which in my opinion is worth it, than streaming). Because in time you probable will lose interest in the game and therefore lose interest in streaming. Than what? you wasted another year.

Don't worry if you fail, when a door closes another door opens! There are always other ways!

If you still want to stream, get a day job and stream at night. If you have no money, how can you pay for the internet bill, electricity bill, rent or mortgage of where you are living, food bill? Any one of these you fail to meet those responsibility, the service will be cut. Therefore you won't be able to stream, have no roof over your head and have no food to eat. Think about it.

Beside if you stream, you need to be good player (like the Progamers), who already in the public eye of Starcraft 2 community in general, just to gain interest and worthwhile for those who wants to view. For example, the following Twitch:
> EGJD has 6 million views and 30.3k Favorite
> STBomber has 892K views and 8.8k Favorite
> Catz has 22.2 Million views and 36.9k Favorite
You don't have to be as good as a progamer (but close enough to them), being popular alone can get you some viewers, but they are generally on YouTube (like Day9, Huskie, TotalBiscuit, etc...), instead of twitch.
Not saying you might not be able to pull those numbers, but the difficult to do so (even it might take more than 1 year).

Beside Twitch is a live streaming, therefore it heavily rely of viewers watching the stream in real time. Which means you have to consider a compromise on timezones, viewers are from. Which you might end up streaming the same or difference content on the same day. Benefit of Youtube, they are easily searched and can be watch anytime of the day. I know you can watch past videos on Twitch, it is not efficient or easy to find all the videos you want to watch.

At one point in one's life, to be honest, people' interest in games will eventually die or slowed down. Because they are at or moving to their next stage in their life (probable you will too), like a Career and Starting a Family, etc... So its going to be a hard road to get and keep viewership (keeping viewers is the hardest of all).

Good Luck to whatever you decide to do.

Re: An Impending Doom and A Journey into the Unknown

I highly recommend not doing the streaming thing, basically what Kez said, you need serious viewership to make any money from it, 2000+ viewers and you might start to see some return and usually people who get that many are either very famous from progaming/ esports personality or have been building it for years.

If you want to take a break from study then travel / work will probably be much better for you socially, financially and give you more of an idea about what kind of future you want. You can always go back to study, so don't even be stressed about that, though you will feel bad no doubt for doing badly, Warcraft3 definitely had that affect on me during high school but one day for sure i will resume study when i want a change.

Also if your idea was to stream Starcraft, then i don't think just about anyone is making money from streaming that game these days, apart from say Stephano or a few others that can get decent numbers T_T

Then again following your dream is always great to do and you got to do what makes you happy
