Today is March 1st, 2013. I have here a picture with a collection of words on it.

Click the image to open in full size.

Does anyone know what these collection of words mean to a select few? These words are words thrown to at them by ‘society’ and in turn refused to be acknowledged and accepted by this same ‘society’. Some are even ‘tortured’ by this ‘society’.

For some, they understand and change themselves to ‘fit in’ but for others, they become so emotionally destroyed that they may do something drastic. And they do indeed find something drastic to do. For them, these actions are a form of comfort, others an emotional outlet. Some may find it relieving, others do it to numb the pain.

And their tools? Razors, blades, box cutters, scissors, kitchen knives and other sharp objects. Lighters, hot irons, curling irons and anything that is excessively hot. Excessive amounts of alcohol, over the counter drugs and sometimes prescription drugs. Some even use their own fingernails.

But that’s just the tip. Some decide it is a good idea to starve themselves, to overexert themselves in exercise, to use their surrounding to physically hurt themselves. Some scratch at healing wounds. Some bang themselves against their wall.

Do you know what all that has in common? Do you know what these words can sometimes cause? It is a simple two word answer.

Self Injury.

For some of you, you may say ‘They’re just doing it for attention.’ or ‘They’re weird leave them be.’ Some of you may even say, ‘What losers. I hope they disappear.’ And you know what is the fun fact, some of them may decide to ‘disappear’. It’s called suicide.

This is what self harm can do. I’m here to paint the ugly picture. I’m here to tell you that unless we help them, understand them, care for them, accept them for who they are and/or love them, some may decide to take their lives. It may not be today or tomorrow, it may never even happen. It is, however, a risk still.

Today is March 1st, 2013. Today is Self Injury Awareness Day.

You are never truly alone.

You'd be surprised how much help people from the internet can provide. This is a community, and there are plenty of decent people around.

Also, http://www.reddit.com/r/suicidewatch.

Cheers folks.

You may brush over the "doing it for the attention" but the sad truth is these days, a lot of it is purely for the attention. Add to that the fact that a lot of people don't want help and it's a mine field most people aren't willing to tread.

To the people that do, kudos to you. Hopefully the people you do manage to help appreciate it.

Stuff like this used to make me so angry, thinking it was a cop out and selfish. I saw friends and loved ones do this to their families and it made me sick.

From meeting new people, talking and maybe just getting older I've chilled out and realised its something some people really can't help. Other people need to help them.

I agree with Badger its a huge minefield but be aware today of your friends and loved ones. Wish I was for some of mine that are long gone.

Depression is a serious issue, and quite a lot of the time it is caused by a chemical unbalance. Someone's life could be quite good, yet due to this unbalance they feel depressed, and they start ignoring the positives in their life and focus on the negative.

If you, or someone you know is depressed, go visit a GP. They won't laugh at you, and they won't treat it like you're just seeking attention, they will take you very seriously and can help you.

Benji's right.

I've been to a GP because I felt so crappy for months on end and found out then and there I've got it. They're extremely helpful to you and will even arrange for you to get even more help. And they'd be willing to do so whenever you need it, so having regular visits are a very good thing to do.

I'm glad I made the decision to go see a doctor, if it wasn't for her I probably would be worse than what I am now. I still have it, but it isn't as bad any more and it is getting better. When you get help, the only road you'll take is the road to recovery.

Both these guys are exactly right , as someone who has been through this and still kind of is your GP will take you very seriously and try there best to help. My GP was very good with me.
