Help from the SC2SEA community

Hi guys,

Recently, my family has been struggling. My step dad has no work after Christmas and my mother is unable to work due to physical restrictions (knee replacement at the age of 45). She is currently on Income Protection, which is 75% of her salary. I am unable to work for a while due to several medical operations I have in the next 2 months: Wisdom teeth removal and eye surgery. These operations will cost approximately $4000 total, and only the wisdom teeth removal is claimable on private health insurance, which leaves my family out of pocket by about $2500 we don't have, and probably won't for a long time. I have no idea how to raise money for this, and I'm looking for the help of the community to get some serious ideas (please, no sell your body rubbish, this is serious).

Thanks in advance,

Nick.

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

More info on 'Eye Surgery'... is it elective laser surgery so you don't need glasses anymore? if so - no way buddy.. or is it more serious, non-elective surgery?

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

Wisdom teeth could wait if its not serious right, in the mean time try to get part-time jobs work 2-3 jobs if you have to and help pull your family through this!

Can we donate to you? I'll be glad to help out a bit.

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

OK sorry, here's more info:

Wisdom teeth were paid for months ago and are getting done this wednesday. That isn't too bad, as I get a medical rebate on the operation.

The eyes, on the other hand, are totally different. I suffer from a disease called Keratoconus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratoconus

I have no choice with the eye sugery, as if I dont get it soon, I could potentially go blind. The sugery I will undergo is known as 'cross-linking'. This surgery is under clinical trial in Australia, and has only existed since 2002. Because of this, it is not possible to claim a medical rebate. This is all happening between this Wednesday and the middle of february next year. which will make it difficult for me to get a job as I will need to take several weeks off in the meantime. Hence, why I'm asking for ideas on what I could do while I don't have work.

Hope that clears things up a bit, if you have any more questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them
Thanks,

Nick.

Wow... Dude I hope you get well real soon. Id love to donate a small amount though. Is it possible?

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

Yeah just see if you can get a job or a few for the next two months, how much will your step dad earn from here until christmas and why can't he get another job/why is his job ending?

Edit: Just read your second post, perhaps your mum could find some job which allows her to work from home or doesn't depend on her being mobile such as some sort of admining? Or I guess that would mean she loses her income protection, actually wouldn't she be able to get 2500 from income protection over the next two months?

To be honest, anything at the moment is tremendously helpful, but I want it to be known that I dont expect donations from anyone. They would help, but I also understand that I need to do things myself as well. For instance, if anyone knows of jobs going that could be done from home, they would be great at the moment.

You could try coaching some lower level players?

BSG. Even $10/15 an hour could add up to a few hundred towards your total if you promote yourself right, and you think coaching is something you could do well.

After a certain amount of time Wisdom teeth do need to be pulled out or else they'll push against your other teeth which makes them go crooked.

Have you considered getting a credit card? Taking out a loan?

She would be able to get approximately that, but there are other payments, not just my medical expenses that are the issue. Think house payments/car payments/food/fuel/phone bills etc. If she does find a new job, she isn't able to claim the income protection and will be getting less money.

My step dad's case, he is almost 60. We live in a small country town, where there is little work. His current job (working on farms/driving bulldozers, etc.) will run out of work for an undetermined period of time as of 2 days after christmas. He has been applying for new jobs pretty much daily for the past 2 years, and because of his age and qualifications, they don't really take much notice of him.

I think that would probably be the best option for the moment, however the 'pros' often charge less than that, whilst giving better advice. I think I will also start streaming daily, and try to build up a decent viewerbase to the point where ads pay, but that would be a lot of viewers, would it not?

@OSFractal, thanks mate, that would help out so much.

@Richard, I would rather not get a credit card, as I can get a job in a few months, and I don't want to have an incredible debt piled up. Plus, without a job I don't think I would be eligible for a credit card. Also, my wisdom teeth are at the stage where they have to come out because my teeth are beginning to crowd.

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

Start looking on seek and career one for jobs you can do online, chances are you'd have to do an in person interview but yeah I guess that would be the best avenue. Also do you have any siblings/do your parents have siblings that can help out by giving you a loan?

You make it sound so easy Duxxie. I've been looking for years and have come up empty handed!

I would strongly advise again looking to coaching or streaming as a source of income. Both these activities are going to have terrible returns for the time you put in. Donations, which would help in the short term, probably still won't amount to the money you'll need or get to the core of the overall problem (not enough constant income into the family).

If you are fit to do so, I would be looking to find any work at all (without knowing the progression of your Keratoconus). If work is hard to find, you might have to lower your standards if it's possible. Even if you are bringing in SOME money now, it's better than bringing in nothing - and you can always keep your ears open for other work in the meantime.

If the time comes and worst comes to worst, take a look at Interest Free loans. They are out there and are available for those in medical need.

It sounds like a very rough position to be in, Keep us up to date on how things progress.

Surely you could get centerlink if your dad doesn't work and your mum is only on 75% of her income.

Youve been looking for what? work in computer graphics?

I havent tried before, but I can learn fast, can we talk about this?

Also, centrelink isn't an option. The minimum wage of parents is something like a joint $40,000, which is slightly over 75% of my mums' yearly wage. Add onto this the money that my step dad has already earned this financial year, however, and there is no chance.

Yup! I've been dabbling in it for ~10 years, it's extremely difficult to find reliable work.

Sounds like you need a Loan.

Kez Mon, 17th-Dec-2012 7:51 PM

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

Yeah I'd definitely say loan or just any work possible. I don't know if you have qualifications/how old you are or any of that, but ANY money from ANYWHERE, even if u have to quit/stop working after ur surgery is better than nothing. Definitely think you should pursue that as opposed to streaming/coaching, as that stuff takes a long time to build up a fan base and is hard to pull of in the best of times. Good luck I really hope things work out for you

Paroxysm Mon, 17th-Dec-2012 7:56 PM

Re: Help from the SC2SEA community

Generally when you go for a loan, they ask if you have a full time job in order to pay it back.. I dont.. as my seasonal job just finished, leaving me in quite a predicament.
