Times Like These

Okay, I'll try keep this short, frank, plain, blunt and to the point.

Race wars was tonight. And the entire hopes of the Protoss rested on me!
And then I lost, and there are many excuses I could make like pressure, nerves, zerg imba, and the good old "if only I did this I would have won". But the times for excuses are over. Well played tgun, congrats zerg.

In about 2 weeks on October 15, I'm going to start my HSC exams. These, if you are unfamiliar, are essentially the final high school exams that determine your "ATAR" which is a rank that lets you choose what course and university you go to.
Many people believe that these exams are incredibly important, the summit of 13 years of education, the exams that will determine your career and entire future. I don't think this is the case. Your future is determined by the kind of person you are, not by how well you can do in a set of exams. These exams might slightly shape the future, but nothing more.

Anyway, rants aside, I'm still going to be preparing for these exams seriously, for a variety of small and unimportant reasons. This means that I'm going to stop playing starcraft. When I need to, I'll still play in the Asia SC2 League (and lose embarassingly because of rustiness). But aside from those few games, no more sc2. If you see me online, something is wrong and you should tell me to get off.

My exams finish on November 8. After that, I'm going to have a few months of complete freedom. In other words, a few months of starcraft. Maybe I'll play twice as much as I play now.

But, until then...

I have lots of study to do

Oh and also, I plan to resume coaching after November 8. I think I have the ability to coach, the main problem I found is that I underprepared some of the lessons and they didn't go as well as I would have hoped. A couple of times, I wasn't able to find a practise partners for the student which was pretty bad. But I don't think there will be problems with anything else.

So yeah, I'll be coaching, but I don't want to coach too often as it does take time which I would otherwise be using to get better at the game myself.

Anyway, I leave you guys with a gift. It's a flash game that I made in 2010. It's called The Impossible Game :V6.61b. (6.61b was the version of dota at the time I finished this game)

A few weeks ago I saw one of my friends playing it and I thought "wow, I remember this, this is awesome". So I decided to get my actionscript together and remake the game a bit. And then I remade the game a bit.

Here are some screenshots.

One of the major things I did was adding bonus levels.

Click the image to open in full size.

These levels are based off my traumatic experiences playing slender. In summary, I play Slender, get 2 pages, get stuck in the bathroom, develop an irrational fear of chairs, quit, and spend 30 mins being embarassed and talking to the live chat.
Unfortunately, you can't read the live chat so everything I say has no context and makes no sense.

And the second time around I learn how to throw rave parties for Slender and get 5 pages and it isn't so bad.

Here is a screenshot of the last bonus level.

So anyway, I hope you're interested in playing it! If you are, here is the download.
http://www.mediafire.com/?2wj4ybzi1inry
There's a readme, a SWF file and a HTML file. If you don't have a flash player, what you can do is:
1. download both the SWF and HTML files
2. open the HTML file to load it in your browser.
Important: Don't use GOM player to open the swf. It's not a good flash player.

If (for some reason) you only want to play the Slender Bonus Levels, click on LOAD and type in "BRAVERY (case sensitive)". It's because you'll need every little bit of bravery you can muster.

If you get stuck, the readme has links to video walkthroughs of both the actual game and the bonus levels. The readme also contains a lot of spoilers so watch out for those.

and... I think that's it. Oh wait, no it isn't. If you play the original game, there's a game timer and a death counter.

Let's have a competition. Whoever can finish the game in the least time gets ... something. I don't know. Free coaching? But what if you're not protoss. Hm... don't worry, we'll figure something out.
So whoever can finish the game in the least time gets something, and it's going to be awesome!
And each death counts as 5 seconds.

Does that make sense? Well, It will make sense when you play. If you wanted to know, I just played through and finished in 471 seconds with 25 deaths. So that's 596 (471 + 25x5) seconds in total. You might have a bit of trouble getting a score like this considering I made the game.

And... I think that is everything. Please play, hope you enjoy it, see you guys November 8.

(actually I'll probably still be lurking around on sc2sea anyway)

Might give this game a go, seems tricky haha.

Good luck with your exams! Hope to see you practicing later down the path and one day carrying the Protoss race.

ATAR is pretty important

For me I was0.5 off from what I needed, and 2 years later, I'm in US where I never imagined to be at. (it wasnt a good thing for me personally moving here)

If only I had gotten that 0.5 extra, my life would've been much smoother.

But again, because of that 0.5 less, Ive experienced some amazing stuff

There's no formula for success, but do try your hardest!

@jay

0.5 off should not make a difference... The clearly in atar stated doesn't mean they don't consider you at all if you fall below it...

For example pretty much every course I am applying for all (most in the 90+ range) accept around 33% of people who get BELOW the cealry in ATAR requirement. If you are talking about GPA fro America then 0.5 is a lot but certainly not here... 0.5 on ATAR is like 2 marks on any of your 5 subjects exam when it comes down to it.

They are rather important if you plan on going straight to uni after high school, If I had gotten a better OP I wouldn't have wasted my 2012. You may as well aim as high as possible because it will help you if you decide to use it, and it will look better on your resume if you have a good rank if you don't decide to use it.

well one way or another, I didn't study hard enough to miss out the clearly-in requirement by 0.5 and it did make a difference.

edit: and it was ATAR.

Lucky VCE is so easy compared to other states. I do pretty much no study at home and I'll still beat 80% of this state -_-

But I envy your ability to just stop. I tried to study, but I found it way too boring, and just went back to my old ways.

"I don't think this is the case. Your future is determined by the kind of person you are, not by how well you can do in a set of exams. These exams might slightly shape the future, but nothing more."

Beautiful piece of writing right with a maturity far beyond your age. I believe results usually reflect a person's priorities at that particular point of time. And schools unknowingly use this as proxy for student ability and most times is quite accurate, unless something in their attitude changes.

People with the ability but not the interest/priority in studies will always find ways to succeed in life. Some realise this quicker than others, drop out of schools and start fortune 500 companies, others take the safer route and only to end up doing the same 10 years later.

Anyway i've hosted your game on sc2sea so its easier for people to play!
