Sleep and ways to get out of it.

So I'm currently at work having just hit the 48 hour mark without sleep. I am finding it so hard to stay awake even though I had 2 cans of V on the drive here. Does anyone have any tips as to how I should go about not sleeping at work?

Click the image to open in full size.

Pic related, it's the closest thing I could find to how I feel.

it's actually quite dangerous to go too long without sleep and try to survive on caffeine kicks. =/

no-doz, pick them up from your nearest woolies/coles or some 7/11 stores/convenience stores will have them

Caffine, then while you wait for that to take effect powernap for 10-15 mins (when you find you have time) thatll help lots i found with work. The other is to dilute your caffine intake, i mix whatever energy drink I can with coke or the like so that I dont just get shaky from too much energy drink and the effects last a bit longer.

I've had 3 cans of V in the past 2 and a half hours and I swear it hasn't done anything

I don't like no-doz. For some reason my mind doesn't care about drinking energy drinks but when it comes to caffiene in pill form it hates it. I'm not sure why.

#5. Think You Got a Good Night's Sleep (After Only Two Hours of Actual Sleep)

So you just picked up the night shift at your local McDonald's, you have class every morning at 8am and you have no idea how you're going to make it through the day without looking like a guy straight out of Dawn of the Dead, minus the blood... hopefully.

"SLEEEEEEEEEP... uh... I mean... BRAAAIIIIINNNSSS..."
What if we told you there was a way to sleep for little more than two hours a day, and still feel more refreshed than taking a 12-hour siesta on a bed made entirely out of baby kitten fur? No more sneaking naps at the fry station for you!
Holy Shit! How Do I Do It?
It's called the Uberman Sleep Schedule, and besides having a totally badass name, it's a way to get the maximum amount of essential sleep for your body without wasting hours of precious time you could be using to work or drink or farm for World of Warcraft gold. The schedule consists of taking six, 20-30 minute power naps, every four hours during the day. Of course, this new sleep pattern blows donkey-dick to get used to, but it's a price you have to pay to basically extend your waking life by several years.

We're pretty sure Kramer did this once on Seinfeld. So it's probably a great idea.
The best way to start it off is to just jump right in. Get to sleep at 8pm, set your alarm for 8:30. Get up, play some Call of Duty, sleep again at 12, alarm at 12:30, and so on. After three or four days of this you will start to get high as **** because of sleep deprivation, and might just want to kill yourself, but don't do it! That would be absolutely counter-productive.
By day 10 or so, your brain will say, "****! FINE, we'll do it your way," and will adapt to your new superhuman sleep schedule.
How Does It Work?
When you sleep normally, your body gets only about an hour and a half of REM sleep, the kind of sleep that is thought to be the most important to keeping your brain sharp. While other stages of sleep help your body to heal and grow, the REM sleep is what makes you feel rested.

Of course, sleeping in a bed doesn't hurt either.
The first few days of adjusting are tough because your body isn't getting ANY of this REM sleep, and your brain hates you for it. After the third day, or so, your brain figures out that you mean business, and every time you lay down for one of these naps, dives directly into REM sleep in an attempt to compensate for the deprivation. Do some quick math and that's two full hours of REM sleep, while those who are sleeping normally are only getting an hour and a half.
Before you know it, while the rest of the world snores away, you'll be up and drawing dicks on their faces.

I agree with aequitas...the best solution is still to take a nap. No amount of any drink or medication will do any good for you and your body when it's screaming "I WANT MY SLEEP NOW". Continuing to ignore it will see u falling sick and you'll just feel lousy.

Cut the caffeine! Your brain is going to try to sleep no matter what at a certain point, the last thing you want is to be stimulating it when it needs rest.

Basically, you just need sleep.

If I were you I'd go home and do that like now. And you shouldn't drive.

Well I still have 5 more hours of my shift left at work. And then I have a half hour drive down the freeway so it sounds like I'm going to be doing everything wrong.

Re: Sleep and ways to get out of it.

At the very least, get some exercise. Don't let your body sit still for too long. If you can get regular breaks (every 30-45 minutes) go outside and sprint or something. Before you drive (if you really have to), do enough exercise to break a sweat and get your heartrate up.

Work the hardest you can possibly work. Always works for me, it makes time fly like crazy, and it'll keep you pre-occupied.

sleep in your car. Even a half hour nap is 100% necessary. You WILL fall asleep at the wheel otherwise. My cousin did that and ended up with horrible scarring on her face and in hospital for many months. Don't drive home until you nap in your car.

I've done this multiple times, especially when I have morning shift(4am start), and I don't know when to sleep or I went out the night before so I end up staying up to the shift next day. Like literally sleep dealing sometimes. The key is about 5+ cups of coffee/tea, slapping urself now and then, and spasming your legs purposely (cuz I gotta stand up).

I managed to get my third wind around midday so I survived the drive home at 2 ^_^. Then went and had coffee with a friend before sleeping for 16 hours.

Feels good man.
