Tough decision..

During my break home in Norway I got a few different offers from a couple of serious teams, some of the teams were willing to pay for my stay in the polish team house ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...opic_id=335167.) I also had a bad ass offer from rox.kis when we were out tearing up the strip clubs to live with them in Russia ( me being drunk off my mind considered taking the train back with them to Russia )

I declined all the offers cause I already had a paid ticket to Australia and I did not want to pause/quit my studies to go pro.

Since I got back to Australia Ive barely been practicing, most of my games have been ******* around on SEA, off racing and 6 pooling with terrible ping (3g net and now dodo adsl) and I still manage to win matches in NASL and get 2nd place at acl pretty ez. I am still motivated as hell to play as much as I can but uni/social life/ shit net and no good practice partners in sea and na forces me to play few serious games a week.

Anyways, for the past couple of days Ive been seriously considering moving to Poland to go pro and Ive already talked with the admins of the house, but I am not sure if this is a good decision for me to pause the studies, leave Australia and try to live off progaming, with mindfreak salary + money I am gonna get for making tutorial vids I can pay the rent.

so lets make a list of pros and cons..

pros:
fun
might be able to make some money from winning tournaments, streaming
cheap to travel to tournaments

cons:
leave Australia
pause studies
probably not sustainable for a long time
got a contract with mindfreak and dont know if they would keep supporting me if i moved

There are some other things to consider as well, I probably have to pay for 1-2 months of rent in Poland without being there ( they wouldnt let me reserve a spot) cause I probably cant move before late july/august due to exams and family coming to Australia in june.

So I ask you fine gentlemen of SEA, give me pros and cons of doing something as stupid as stopping my studies and potentially not making any money

-TargA

Re: Tough decision..

I'd be sorry to see you go mate, but I would also say that you can study at any age. The ministry of win will likely not be there in a year or two. I believe you should take whatever chances you can get to travel and have fun playing sc2 while you can, and while the game lasts.

You can always work some job or go to uni.

Re: Tough decision..

Pausing studies is not necessarily a stupid thing. I've watched you play. You're incredibly good. You can make it, and with serious practice you would more than likely make it as one of the best foreigners.

The pros. You will meet a lot of new people, and the best part? You all have something in common right off the bat, and you're all ******* brilliant at it. Starcraft 2 + Going Pro = Getting Paid for gaming = Fun job? The only problem with that is that you don't want to focus too hard because your passion becomes your job, as it might make you hate the game. Cheap Travel to Tourneys is all part of the pro package I guess.

For the cons, Australia will always be here.. you're not missing out on a great big deal. As for pausing studies, I had to do that to work for a year and make a living so I could go back. IF you choose to defer, your course will still be waiting for you whenever you choose to take it back up again. For the other two, it really depends I guess.

Think of this. 50 years down the track, you're old and grey, and you look back to 9/05/2012, and think, what if? What if i had taken that chance to go pro, even if it were only for a short time. You cant live on what if's sir. I say take this very unique opportunity by the horns and ride it home! Prove to the world how good you really are!

I say GET OUT THERE AND **** UP THE WORLD TARGA! And when you're done winning everything in Europe, you can come back here and school us whilst studying full-time.

Exciting opportunities man!

Re: Tough decision..

Just keep in mind that you only live once, and that, in theory, you can resume studying at any time.

I think given the opportunity, and knowledge that I'd be able to resume my degree at any time, I'd jump at the opportunity to go to the Polish training house, it looks awesome.

Edit: Also, like others have sort of mentioned, how much would you regret not going to the house/going pro in sc2. Would you rather just finish your degree and head out into the big wide world.

nirvAnA Thu, 10th-May-2012 2:39 AM

Re: Tough decision..

If you pause your studies make sure that you will be able to resume studying later, that would be the most important thing. Best to have a talk with your university administration first. I believe this is the start of the semester so you would have lost just 1 month.

On one hand its going to be a big risk (How legit are the Polish House admins etc you don't want to be screwed over and stuck in Poland somehow) and when SC2 becomes your job and you are under constant pressure to win it is really NOT fun anymore and you must be prepared for that shift in attitude.

On the other hand if you don't give this a go its going to be a opportunity you might always end up regretting, since you're still young and you obviously have the skill to compete with the best.

dippa Thu, 10th-May-2012 2:43 AM

Re: Tough decision..

Exactly what Nirvana said - you need to find out if you can resume your studies (deferral for a year, perhaps?). This is probably the most important factor in your decision and it's the one you need the most clarity on.

TargA Thu, 10th-May-2012 3:25 AM

Re: Tough decision..

If I move I probably wont come back to Australia to finish the studies, will probably finish them in Norway ( dont think this is a problem anyways) and the house and admins seem legit so far, and if i was to get screwed.. ticket from poland to norway is less than 100$ and its no biggie for me to get a job in Norway anyways.. so its not like my life would go to the shits

Re: Tough decision..

a guy just did an interview with the main organizer behind the house: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4yBU...=youtu.be&hd=1

[3:35:17 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: hey again
[3:35:29 AM] Ministry of Win: hey
[3:35:42 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: would it be possible to sign a contract starting from july and then move in to the house in august?
[3:36:24 AM] Ministry of Win: I think yes
[3:36:55 AM] Ministry of Win: I am not sure
[3:37:05 AM] Ministry of Win: as far as I know we will have players signing from 3 to 6 months
[3:37:08 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: could you find out please?
[3:37:11 AM] Ministry of Win: so it could be hard
[3:37:14 AM] Ministry of Win: I know that
[3:37:22 AM] Ministry of Win: it's to early to find out
[3:37:23 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: is the house full right now?
[3:37:24 AM] Ministry of Win: what's gonna happen
[3:37:26 AM] Ministry of Win: no
[3:37:27 AM] Ministry of Win: it is not
[3:37:35 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: okey, when are the first players moving in?
[3:37:39 AM] Ministry of Win: 21st of May
[3:37:45 AM] Kristoffer Marthinsen: oh ok

they seem super ******* serious in interviews etc but not being able to give me a straight answer on questions like this kinda sucks ~~

Ask Eclypsia instead they are not asking of being in a house. But they might be full, though, I don't know. They seem to have a lot of money and very very well organised. They would just ask you to perform. You don't have to leave Australia. desRow is still in Korea as Artist I think.

Im already signed by a team that supports me, thats not the problem! my dilemma is go to poland and do what i really want to do or stay in australia and finish the studies and continue living with friends and not being able to play sc2

Nemo Thu, 10th-May-2012 4:43 AM

Re: Tough decision..

Then nothing more to say, you already have all the clues now. Just do what you want to do and be sure to have a viable plan B whatever you choose. It seems it's already the case though.

Even if you leave Australia, you still belong to us in tournaments as far as we're concerned

What does that even mean :/

Take me with you Marthinsen, I want some of that polish bread!

Re: Tough decision..

I think you should ask Mindfreak first

FLuX Thu, 10th-May-2012 9:12 AM

Re: Tough decision..

Don't all-in when it comes to your future; make sure you can safely transition.

I agree with Mayo though; talk to Mindfreak and see if they would continue to support you. The more information you know about consequences of option A and option B the better.

You already know that they aren't full "yet"; and from what I understand, the place priority for players living there is based on skill/performance. Basically, if you're a better player and are performing at a higher level than some of the players there; it's possible that they'll give a place to you over another, "lesser" player.

But yes, don't all-in; make sure you can resume studies at a later time if you'd like. But I think that the opportunity is too good to miss; so go for it

I think what you just said answers your question mate

Re: Tough decision..

Do what you feel you think is right. it's your life, your choice no matter what happens don't let anything hold you back if you want to go.

Re: Tough decision..

Go. You're not going to get a lot of opportunities like this, it's important that you take them.

TAriiChard Thu, 10th-May-2012 12:50 PM

Re: Tough decision..

Go!!!!!!! ..... But make sure you still play dota 2 with us ..

EveGaming Thu, 10th-May-2012 1:35 PM

Re: Tough decision..

This is interesting.

Well with the potential everyone sees in you, I think it won't hurt to try Progaming for a year or two and see how it goes? I mean studies are important, but then again, I live by "NO REGRETS" - you can always come back to studying in the future if you wish to do so, but e-Sports and gaming is not always the same.

Then again, I also agree with what Mayo said, one of the most important things is having MIndfreak have a little bit of space to talk about this since they will be the ones supporting you throughout EU. I don't know if I may be right, but sometimes I think going back to your home-country can build a bit of patriotism and pride!

Anyways, best of luck with your endeavors mate, if you stay in AU, that's great, if you go all the way to Poland, then go rape some!

Once in a life time, Uni can always wait imo, gl!

Re: Tough decision..

There is no chance MF will continue to support you and I highly doubt they will match what you're being offered.

I would take it by the horns mate, these opportunities don't come up much... You can always go back to studying

Carpe Diem. Seize the day.

Re: Tough decision..

thanks for all the feedback guys, the reason i made this thread was to get feedback and see if people could think of other reasons to stay or move than i did!

Whether or not mindfreak would continue supporting me is not a big issue, i have money saved up and i could probably get in a decent eu team, but id rather have them support me ofcourse !

at the moment im 90% sure im moving.
