Bo3 In-House

Ok this was just a simple set of practice games with my clan mate iRLdKiwi, a pretty solid ! We played 3 games in total, so let's just call it a Bo3 They were (mostly) pretty good games so I'll just writeup for fun!

+ [Game 1] +

Game 1
TheGrayZerg vs iRLdKiWi
on Entombed Valley

We decided to play this map because it was new and we wanted to get some exposure on it.

He opened up with an aggressive 2 rax on his low ground while I went standard 15 Hatch / 14 Pool

And in case you don't understand our chat, 'walao eh' is loosely translated as 'for f*ck's sake' but like a very much milder version.

The odd thing about his opening was he didn't put on any bunker pressure at all! When I asked him about it after the game he said that it would be too late, though I think it's always good to bunker pressure (even fake pressure) as T just to force a spine / some lings.

The game goes on as he takes his easily defendable natural and walls off with a Depot + Barracks wall. I decided to play a macro game and take an early 3rd, while teching to Lair and getting a Baneling's nest in case of an all-in (Very possible with a 2 rax opening!), Droning heavily behind this.

I always miss drops and lose as a result, so this time I was wary, as you can see I lined about 3-4 Overlords along the flight path to make sure I don't miss a drop.
However, dKiwi was sneaky as you can see he had 2 Medivacs flying to the left, making a big round to drop on my 3rd!

Forced cancels on Turrets!

I continued to stay active with my Mutas (very important!) and managed to delay his 3rd base from going up, while taking my 4th base. At the same time, his 16 marine drop was hitting my 3rd!

I quickly Burrow my Drones, and I got really lucky as my banelings/lings were back in time to clear up his Marines before he Scanned to clear out some Drones. Got a lucky hit with my Banelings as well

Every Zerg's Dream, every Terran's Nightmare

I teched up to Hive and got some Infestors (Which I didn't use for some reason), while Droning up pretty well. (Went up to 82! Nice number)
I caught him moving out thanks to my forward Burrowed Infestors, and seeing that he was unsieged, my ling/blings/muta swarmed him.

With a superior economy and a larger army, I rallied a big force of ling / banelings into his 3rd and he was forced to tap out.

GG!

Thoughts:
I thought I macroed well that game, Droning up rather liberally. But this could be helped by the fact that he didn't execute any strong timing Terran pushes against me, and even his 16 Marine drop was significantly delayed as I was controlling the air -rush space and forced him to go the big round.
This economy lead carried me into the mid-end game with a superior army and ability to replenish it fast, and his lack of drop play / timing pushes to deny my economy led to his downfall.

+ [Game 2] +

Game 2

TheGrayZerg vs iRLdKiWi
on Shakuras Plateau

I open the same standard build 15/14 yada yada and he opens 11/11 2 Barracks!

With the current TvZ metagame being Hellion dominated, I entirely forgot (or probably didn't know) how to handle a 11/11 Bunker rush, much less this:

2 Bunkers with Marines pressure!

I basically handled it pathetically and pulled too few Drones, and his Bunkers completed and I GGed out.

Thoughts
I suck.

Replay here.

+ [Game 3] +

Game 3

TheGrayZerg vs iRLdKiWi
on Shakuras Plateau

Eager to avenge my humiliating loss, we play this map again (Because I wanted to practice as I was weak on this and TDA)

I open standard and he opens with a 2 Barracks on the low ground again.. and follows up with:

A complete wall-off!

I couldn't do anything and had to give up my expo, but I was Droning up behind this and after he took out my natural expo he pulled his forces back, he forgot to salvage 2 bunkers!
I figured since he invested in these 2 bunkers and that depot, I wasn't that far out of the game yet, and on checking the replay I realized he actually waaaay overproduced Marines for that bunker wall off.
You probably need like 6 at most to take out the Hatch in that situation, he made nineteen Marines!
I think he could have just marched up my ramp to kill me with those Marines if he realized how big of an army lead he had at that point.

As a result of him not making SCVs well, my Drone count actually overtook his quickly and I held the lead going into the mid game after retaking my natural.

Now on watching the replay I realize I wasn't as far behind as I thought I was. And because I thought I needed to do something wonky to comeback after the bad opener, I went for a Nydus Worm!

Click the image to open in full size.

He actually had Marines on patrol on the perimeter, but JUST barely missed it to autoattack it, and I think he wasn't watching his minimap too!

Click the image to open in full size.

So BLEURHGHH the Nydus opens but he pulls his SCVs pretty fast so takes minimal damage. He pulls his army of marine/Marauder back and fends it off well.

During this I take my 3rd base and was Droning up well. He makes a counterpush of Marine-Marauder - but my creep spread was decent and he was forced to engage in an inferior position (i.e. On Creep)

Click the image to open in full size.
Zergling surround + Baneling boomz = Textbook Zerg

I continue Droning and going up to a standard Ling/Bling/Muta army while he had an Infantry heavy army (few tanks). While taking his 3rd base, I spotted it and Nydused it!

Click the image to open in full size.
Took out 4 MULES and a few SCVs... And I realized I actually missed a large SCV transfer by 5 seconds! If I was 5 seconds later I would have killed like 20 SCVs.

And after this my Mutalisks had popped so I did some decent harass in his main as well, killing over 10 SCVs.

After this sequence, I felt more confident that I had somehow gained an advantage despite the shaky start. I took a 4th base and kept macroing units.

Click the image to open in full size.

When he moved out with his Marine/Marauder/Tank army, I engaged him quickly before he got too close to my base, and with a good army spread he won the initial clash. However, my reinforcing units cleared up the rest of his army.

But he wouldn't let up - he moved right out again with a good-sized army that he had macroed up back home. He established a Siege position between my natural and 3rd, but I had Ultralisks on the way so I waited for them before engaging.

IClick the image to open in full size.
Ultralisks+Muta+Lings barely pushing through his siege line.

He had a steady stream of Marine/Tank coming out, but because of my superior economy, I also could match his production with lings/ultra. I kept trading armies and defended his attempts at drops, at the same time taking a 5th base as he tried to take a 4th (which was delayed by a burrowed Zergling )

Click the image to open in full size.

He makes a solid push towards my 5th, but my Tier 3 + Upgrade advantage (he was 1/1, I was 2/2) was too much and crushed his offensive force.

Click the image to open in full size.
I pushed forward with my army of ling/bling/muta/ultralisk, with the ultimate aim of denying his 4th.

Click the image to open in full size.
My constant rally of Zerglings coupled with Banelings took out a lot of his SCVs, and destroyed his 4th.

Click the image to open in full size.

My next rally of ling/ultra/mutalisk cleared up his remaining army, and with his 4th base down, he tapped out. GG!

Thoughts
Wow that Bunker+Depot build is really dumb. Apparently dKiWi told me the only way to beat that is to prevent the bunkers from going up in the first place (i.e. by blocking the ground with ling/drone)
His overproduction of Marines and lack of SCVs cost him dearly as it meant his heavy investment to deny my FE didn't really mean much.
I got lucky with some baneling/muta harass which allowed me to pull further ahead in Drones and kept him in a defensive shell.
When we finally engaged in the open, I had a strong economy which allowed me to constantly reinforce units to overcome Terran's heavy firepower, and my upgrade advantage (he forgot to upgrade once he hit 1/1) plus the economic advantage just meant a steady, firm push to victory.

Replay here.

If you have only time to read/watch one, check out G3. You should really watch G3 actually it's pretty exciting

Re: Bo3 In-House

Yea G3 was pretty epic and the feeling of relief and satisfaction that washed over me when he GGed was amazing. But at the same time he must have felt quite frustrated at having lost it so Can't really gloat/feel too happy in a win over a fellow clan mate haha!

I'm looking forward to doing more (text-only) recaps, hope some tournament starts soon haha.
