My Thoughts 2

Yo yo, here are some more thoughts for you to ponder on. Please reply to them

Can robots be programmed to have feelings?

How come sound can go through things but heat can't?

What is time? I was talking to a friend about how apparently there is this new thing that allows you to go faster then the speed of light which makes you move through time slower which apparently allows for time travel. But what is time?

How come it is illegal to park in a handicap spot but it isn't to poop in a handicap toilet?

How come it is against the law (is it?) to be anti religious but it isn't to be anti non-religious?

How do pack animals organise shit so well?

If robots are programmed to feel and learn, then we're all screwed.

And heat can go through things lol

As to the others, I have no idea. Someone solve it!

Heat goes through things the same way sound does.

Re: My Thoughts 2

Are you sure? Because sound hits the particles of the lets say wall and opens them and then the vibrations of the wall sends the vibrations out to the air on the other side of it.

Re: My Thoughts 2

The sound waves / heat thing can be easily explained by physics (which I have forgotten) so I'll let someone else do it.

The emotions in robots thing is actually a very deep and long and controversial philosophical debate that I've read before. The short answer is both sides (yes they can be programmed/ no they can't be programmed) give fairly compelling arguments so it's relatively unresolved. Google it

For pack animals qn, same way humans do.

Re: My Thoughts 2

Sound is the vibration of particles that forms as a mechanical wave that transfers through all matter. So when a sound wave hits an object, the particles also vibrate and carry the same sound wave. Depending on the amount of energy the sound wave is carrying, it will continue to vibrate other particles outside the object until the sound wave dissipates.

Heat is simply energy that flows spontaneously from a higher temperature to a lower temperature. However at the molecular level, heat basically provides mechanical energy for molecules to move and collide with each other. By heating up an object, the molecules in the object can also collide with other particles of another system and thus successfully transferring heat.

So basically heat goes through things but does it differently compared to sound.

Re: My Thoughts 2

Even though time is a physical quantity used to define velocity or distance, there is still your basic question of what really is time. If you take the scientific point of view then you come across the investigation of space-time, which I don't really want to dive into since its quite complex. However you can take the philosophical approach which is stated by some philosophers that time is neither an event or a thing.

You don't need a permit to crap in the Disabled Toilets. Would be hilarious to have one though!

At the molecular level isn't vibration of the particles due to sound quite similar to the collisions of particles cause by the mechanical energy provided by heat?

It's both caused by the movement of the particles.

Re: My Thoughts 2

Not really, when particles vibrate from sound they oscillate as a wave form through all solids, liquids and gases. Collisions of particles caused by mechanical energy from heat occurs in gas and liquid states. Particles in those states have a dynamic motion and when you provide heat, the speed of the particles increase. However in solid state masses, the molecules absorb the energy and try to break free of each other.

Depends on what you mean by feelings.

My personal belief is that you CAN program a machine to act as if it possesses feelings, but emotions and emotional health are generally not well enough understood to be accurately represented. This may change in the future, but I doubt that it will be possible, at least with traditional programming to give machines emotions.

Personally I am more interested in how long it will take to get robots that can move in a way that mimics human movement without the jerks and stops that betray the fact it is a machine.

This one has been done to death by people who understand the answer better than I do. Basically, DtorR is correct.

He was probably talking about the particles that were measured travelling faster than the speed of light. There are all sorts of ideas about time and how it interacts with space, and I don't know nearly enough to actually talk about it with any accuracy. The basic idea behind the experiment and sort of what your friend is referring to, is that you can not, at least according to Einstein's theories of relativity, accelerate something that has mass past the speed of light. (Possibly not even to the speed of light, though I am not sure on that point) The trick is a particle can go faster than the speed of light provided that it is created already travelling at the speed.

Mostly it is an issue of enforceability. There is not much point having a law, and it might even be a law in this case, if it can not be enforced. Do you really want to be the cop checking who goes into a disabled toilet?

I am curious on how you define anti-religious. I think I understand what you are getting at though. I think the big thing to remember that people without religion are still in the minority, even in Western society. This has never been a huge issue as far as religion versus science until the last couple of decades even, and even that debate is ridiculous. Science and religion can coexist, but that is another kettle of fish. The big issue, which is where it being against the law to be anti-religious is when one religion oppresses another.

One quick question, minimat; Is Atheism a religion?

It is a combination of instinct and behaviour learning. Young animals learn how to behave from their parents or pack. They watch what the older animals do and try to mimic the behaviour. Much of the pack hunting behaviour is more instinct and filling gaps than it is communication and thought. This is similar to human infants which will mimic their parents and siblings until they have developed enough mental and physical capacity to talk and reason to a limited extent. As far as I am aware animals do not get to the reasoning stage, which is what separates humans from all other animals.
