Unburrowing Myself after being Scared
 

I would like to apologise to Eternal ESports, Elusory and those in my group for the GPDL. I have been away for some time... mainly because I was scared for my safety.

inb4 "well that escalated quickly."



So why exactly was I scared? Keep on reading.

I was on ladder when I came across a brand new account. No levels, default avatar and so on. You get the idea.

This match turned out to be one of my easiest games ever and I roflstomped the guy. After the game I offer to help him to get better at the game with a few pointers. At which point the guy says "#@!$ off nerd. I'm going to dox you!"

I laughed to myself. After all for a start I was on my alternate Zerg account with a common enough generic SC2 name and my 'real name' is listed there as Klaus Bergoshima. A character from the James Bond movie Diamonds are Forever iirc. And more importantly, this account has no links to any outside site. its all within sc2.

So I didn't see any way that this guy could gain any information.

A couple days later I'm back on my account and he pops up a few minutes later with an in game message "I've found some things. Wanna hear?"

I chuckled. What on earth could this guy have dug up?

He then proceeds to give my actual REAL name. The town I was born in and the town I live in.

Which made me manure myself a little bit but then I thought, "It's probably just one of my mates trolling me."

So I start calling up my buddies and they all claim innocence.

Which started the nerves up again. Ok lets be honest here. I was starting to be extremely afraid of my safety.

So what do I do?

This invasion of my RL, the mask stripping of my online persona and the threat of being doxed and having my personal info splashed on some site somewhere scared the manure out of me.

So all that made my mind somehow to come to the conclusion to just cut myself off from StarCraft entirely for a time, hoping that my doxer would lose interest.

A fortnight passes and I go back on StarCraft, my doxer doesn't make an appearance. I was still nervous but I was starting to relax now.

Then that night I get an email from a strange account with "Hi! Michael! It's me from hots!" as the subject line.

Open the email up and inside is just a few words. What were those words? My actual RL address.

So now I am realllllllllly panicking. This guy knows where I live? How did he find it? What's going to happen?

This was a real mindfuck (sorry mods I just dont have better words to describe how I felt at that point). I was losing it.

Once again, with my fingers crossed I called up my mates again "Come on guys. I'm serious. If any of you are doing this you need to tell me now."

Once again they claim innocence.

I was so sure it was one of my friends. But surely they wouldnt lie to me?

So I went to the police. Enough was enough.

About a week later I receive a phone call from a (now former) friend who was in Aus at the time of initial contact with my doxer but flew to UK for a holiday a few days before the email.

THE ASSHOLE ADMITTED EVERYTHING! He told me it was him and that he did everything.

I flew into an absolute rage. It was fortunate I was sitting down at the time. If I was standing I would have thumped the asshole.

This guy fucked with mind, fucked with my life and fucked with what I felt to be one of the most important periods of my SC2 'career'.

Long and short of it is. He is now no longer my friend.

For the sake of the friendship I bore him, I decided not to press any sort of charges.

So again, I'm sorry to everyone I have let down because of this saga. I hope you understand why I've been dark for some time.
